This document analyzes and summarizes music videos for solo artists and bands using Mise-en-scène (M-E-S), editing, and camera angle techniques. For Ariana Grande's "Focus" video, different locations and outfits contrast each other while her white hair symbolizes purity. One Direction's "Steal My Girl" changes band members and locations in clips and uses weird props. Taylor Swift's "Wildest Dreams" uses editing to make the video feel like a dream. Little Mix's "Woman Like Me" uses transitions between band members singing and the storyline. Bruno Mars's "Uptown Funk" uses tracking shots and montages. 5 Seconds of Summer's video depicts

Arianne Grande – Focus
• There are different location and for
each different outfit, helping contrast
and highlight the artist.
• The majority of the video is based
around purple or white colors which
contrast each other.
• Her hair remains white symbolizing
purity and innocence, which does not
go along with narrative so it creates
binary oppositions
One Direction – Steal my girl
• When the clip changes location is also
changes band member.
• The clothing on each of the band
member is very different helping to
show that individually they are all
different.
• The props for each of the scenes do
not relate to the narrative at all, which
helps make the video stand out within
the music industry based around their
weird props and locations, also their
actors such as Danny DeVito.
• Towards the end of the video all the
band is together bringing all the
differences together overall, giving the
video a comforting feeling

4. Editing
Taylor Swift – Wildest Dreams
• In Taylor Swifts Wildest
dreams, the editing technique
makes the music video more
like a dream. The warm tines
suggest love whereas the
lighting on the man is cold to
suggest his intentions that
have been added later on in
post-production.
Little Mix – Woman Like Me
• They use many transitions to
help carry out their narrative.
As they are a band, they all
have their own “verse”
meaning that camera has to
flip back and fourth to them
singing and to the story line.
This is shown in the music
video a lot, as there are lot of
match cuts.

5. Camera Angles
Bruno Mars– Uptown Funk
• There are a lot of tracking shots
used with his music video, especially
when there is a women involved in
the seen to help draw attention to
how the men all react to her. There
is a lot a montage of clips from
different angles to help bring the
narratives. The medium shots help
the audience see what Bruno Mars
is doing i.e., getting his hair done
5 Seconds of Summer
• There are moments in the video when the shots are
continuous but there are also frequent cuts to male
faces and different angles that promotes that idea that
they are being watched by many people. The video
features shots where the artists are both depicted alone
(lip-syncing their solo parts in the song) and all together
painting them as strong women on their own and
together as a group which is essential for the promotion
of a girl group as people are drawn the unity and 'girl
power' of the artists.
• Up angles and a variety of different levels are used
when focusing on the artists reiterating the power that
they have throughout the video and frequent uses of
close ups during lip-sync moments shows the fierce
expressions of the female artists and how the males
react to them within the video. Long shots are used
during choreographed and group moments gives the
audience a wider view of the artist showing off both the
choreography, their attire, the location and their skills as
dancers.
