Digipak Analysis: Arctic Monkeys-
Whatever people say I am, that’s
what I’m not.
This was Arctic Monkeys 1st
album, so the band had to make a
big impression on the audience of
British indie music. The Album
was released on the 23rd of
January 2006. The album name
“Whatever people say I am, that’s
what I’m not” was taken from a
line from the novel “Saturday
Night and Sunday Morning”, the
name was picked because Alex
recognised a link between the
songs and the novel, for example
“still take you home” and “From
ritz to rubble” both cover a tad of
the weekend and the same
character is onvolved.
The man shown on the front cover of the
album is Chris McClure, who is a friend of
the band and leader of The Violet May. The
fact that Chris simply looking into the
camera smoking gives the band a common
appearance, as if they have not went to any
effort to get a spectacular album cover. The
front picture reflects the common lyrics in
the songs on the album such as lyrics
featured in the song “a certain romance”
where the lyrics read “well oh they might
wear classic Reeboks or nackered Converse
or tracky bottoms tucked in socks”. The
lyrics give the impression that people don’t
care about their appearance, just as Chris
on the picture.
The actual disk has been
made to replicate an ash
tray, which links to the
image on the front and back
of Chris McClure smoking a
cigarette. The band have
chosen to use the colours
black and white for their
colour scheme, one possible
reason for this could be
because they want to
enphesise how life is not
always going to be positive,
like the track on the album
“ritz to rubble”.
