2. Vegetable: Their classification
and Importance
• What is called a vegetable in one country many not
be considered a vegetable in another. There is no all-
inclusive definition for the term vegetable. For
example, tomato, a vegetable in the Philippines, is
considered a fruit in some European countries. What
is used as a vegetable by some is not considered a
vegetable by others.
• A suggested definition for the term vegetable is ; an
edible succulent plant or part of a plant; it is not
ordinary a staple but usually eaten with staples.
3. NAMING OF VEGETABLE
• Scientific Names - The Internationally accepted term i given by botanist
according to the rules if International code of nomenclature. The scientific
name of cabbage is "Brassica pekinensis". "Brassica" is the generic name
and "pekinensis" is the species name.
• Botanical Variety - Additionally a latin name is added after the two-term
scientific name. It proceeded by the abbreviation "var" (for the latin word
varietas). It is a minor unit within the species in which the individual differs
slightly.
• Group - This refers in the assemblage of similar varieties of plants belonging
to a species having many distinctly differently type of plants.
4. • Kind - This refers to all plants whether of one or many reliazed
species, which in general usage are accepted as a single vegetable
and know by one common name.
• Variety - A variety is a subdivision of one kind characteristics by
growth, plant, fruit, seeds or other characteristics by which it can be
differentiated from others of of the same kind.
• Strain - Plant of a given variety which differ from others of variety in
one important or two minor fractures, the differences notbbeing great
enough to justify a new variety name are called strains.

• A system of classification is desirable for cause
of discussing vegetable in general and their
principles of culture. The scientific system would
be one based on botanical classification or on
genetic relationship. There are several ways of
classifying vegetable.

Method of culture
In the method of classification, more than one family is represented in
each group which has similar basic cultural requirements
• legumes ; Bush sitaw , Shap sitaw, cowpen.
• Solanaceous fruit ; Eggplant, peper, tomato. Cucurbits ;
• Cucumber, Watermelon, Squash.
• Root and bulb crop; Radish, white potato, sweet potato, onions, beans,
carrots, turnip and garlic.
• Cole crops ; Chinese Cabbage, Cauliflower, broccoli.
• Salad crops ; Celery, parsley, lettuce, and wateroress.
• Potherbs or Greens ; Mustard, spinach, Kale and colland.
• Perennial crops ; Katuray , asparagus, malunggay
• Sweet corn
• Okra and roselle
