Van Gogh was a post-Impressionist painter known for his unique style and troubled mental state. He lived a life of poverty and failure until after his death. He produced over 1600 drawings and 750 paintings in only 10 years, including famous works like "The Starry Night" and "Sunflowers". Van Gogh struggled with mental illnesses like epilepsy and phycosis, and ultimately took his own life at age 37 by shooting himself. He has since become a hugely influential artist and major part of Western culture, though he only sold one painting during his lifetime.

Manet’s painting is considered to be the one that
turned the Parisian art world on its head, and
propelled the world into the Modern Art Era. It
might not look like much, but this image is actually
ridiculing what the traditionalists viewed as
appropriate subject matter. This is a contemporary
scene, with Parisians having lunch in a park with a
naked woman. Another woman wearing a Roman
toga plays in the water. It is obvious that this scene
would never really happen in real life, and that’s the
message Manet was after. He also painted it with
bold, thick strokes of color.

Gustave Courbet was a 19th century French realist painter from a farming family who sought to depict ordinary subjects and scenes of modern life rather than historical or religious themes. He was part of a group of realist artists called the "Pavilion of Realism" who favored truth over prettiness in their depictions of rural peasants and laborers. Courbet's most famous painting A Burial at Ornans shocked critics for its large scale and realistic portrayal of ordinary people. He established a reputation for being outspoken and challenging conventions in his choice of subjects and artistic style.
Post impressionism
Post-Impressionism developed in response to Impressionism between 1886 and 1892. Artists considered Impressionism too casual or naturalistic and sought to explore emotion in paint. Manet’s painting is considered to be the one that
turned the Parisian art world on its head, and
propelled the world into the Modern Art Era. It
might not look like much, but this image is actually
ridiculing what the traditionalists viewed as
appropriate subject matter. This is a contemporary
scene, with Parisians having lunch in a park with a
naked woman. Another woman wearing a Roman
toga plays in the water. It is obvious that this scene
would never really happen in real life, and that’s the
message Manet was after. He also painted it with
bold, thick strokes of color.

Degas developed a painterly approach to his
everyday scenes as Manet had. His compositions
appear off-centered, and elements are cut-off on
the edges, much like a photograph would crop a
scene. This is unusual in painting at the time, and
creates a image of spontaneity, as a snap-shot does.

Gustave Courbet was a 19th century French realist painter from a farming family who sought to depict ordinary subjects and scenes of modern life rather than historical or religious themes. He was part of a group of realist artists called the "Pavilion of Realism" who favored truth over prettiness in their depictions of rural peasants and laborers. Courbet's most famous painting A Burial at Ornans shocked critics for its large scale and realistic portrayal of ordinary people. He established a reputation for being outspoken and challenging conventions in his choice of subjects and artistic style.
Post impressionism
Post-Impressionism developed in response to Impressionism between 1886 and 1892. Artists considered Impressionism too casual or naturalistic and sought to explore emotion in paint. Key Post-Impressionist artists included Paul Cezanne, whose still lifes influenced Cubism, Vincent Van Gogh, known for his vivid colors and expressive brushwork, and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, who captured modern Parisian nightlife in satirical works that bordered on caricature. These artists broke from Impressionism by restoring color, shape, and subjectivity to their paintings.

Impressionism

Artists such as Monet, Pissarro, Renoir, and Degas broke from traditional techniques to focus on capturing the effects of light and color through loose brushwork. Monet's painting Impression, Sunrise gave the movement its name. Key characteristics included painting outdoors and using dabs of color and optical mixing on the canvas. Post-Impressionism emerged later in the century as artists sought to combine Impressionism's techniques with more traditional composition and design.

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in Education
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
