Irving, Poe, and Hawthorne were arguably some of the most popular writers of the 19th century
(Dincer 223; Lauter 2505). All three of them are known for their short essays and their advocacy to
make writing a full fledged and legitimate profession. Their writings show that they were hugely
influenced by the Romantic Movement (romanticism); a movement in art, literature, music,
philosophy, politics and culture towards focusing on the individual, the subjective, and the
spontaneous (Dincer 218). Romanticist writing encouraged contemplation and self awareness, direct
contact with nature, and a focus on and an exploration of inner feelings (Dincer 223). Yet, they had
distinct writing style, focus, and theme. While Irving was more of a light romantic writer, a writing
style characterized by optimism, Poe and Hawthorne are widely considered dark romantic Authors
whose writings were characterized by pessimism that sees the world as full of dark, evil, suffering,
horror, and mystery. While Irving s writing focused more on satire and humor, Poe Hawthorne s

Personal Reflection On Deaf People
My personal reflect on this film is that around the 1800 s it seemed that people didn t like deaf people.
They were isolated from the others, and they also thought that they couldn t be taught, but in 1817
Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet opened the first deaf children school in America. Which was grate because
they were going to be able to learn new things. The man named Alexander Graham Bell thought that a
life without signing will be a better life. Bell also tried to keep deaf people apart from each other
because he didn t want a big community of deaf people in the world. And that was unfair because
hearing people wouldn t really be able to communicate with deaf people. Bell also thought that
teaching the children to read lips and to speck would be much better. In fact around the late 1860 s
oral schools opened which was pretty cool but it was unfair that they didn t want the children to sign,
specially because that was their natural language. One thing that I thought was pretty cool was that the
kids would make their own sign name, by seeing what your character was like and seeing how you
were, then they will give you a sign name that sort of ties into you, something unique to you. Another
thing that was unfair that deaf people had to go through was that in school they couldn t sign, they

Control has many different meanings for many different people. To most, however, this word brings to
mind one person forcing another do his or her will, but other things have control over people as well.
Sherwood Anderson shows two examples of control in Don and Ted. These two characters have

Cola, as told in the book A History of the World in Six Glasses by Tom Standage. However, focusing
on three drinks in particular, rum, coffee, and tea, an enormous story can be told. Those three drinks
impacted the world in many ways, especially the cultures that consumed or traded them. In order to
produce Rum, many Africans were brought to the Americas to work in servitude. This caused a culture
shift, because now you had two very different cultures working closely together, but one was
considered superior to the other. Coffee sparked the emergence of enlightened thinkers, whose
conversations and writings profoundly shaped European culture. Tea helped Britain retain the colossal
empire they are often credited with. This is because of a secondary effect of tea as it helped to create
the British Empire, which in turn impacted the world colossally. Coffee, tea, and rum catapulted the
world into major cultural shifts.

Throughout most of history men have been credited with almost all of humanities major
accomplishments. The world of ancient Rome was no exception. Great emperors, philosophers, and
religious figures all came from this great empire. But as with everything there was an exception, in the
case of the early Byzantine Empire it was Theodora. This summer I read Theodora Empress of
Byzantium by Paolo Cesaretti, a book chronicling Theodora s life and accomplishments.Theodora was
born into that lowest rank of the empire in about 501, the daughter of the bear keeper of the blue
faction of the Hippodrome. As Theodora grew up she was put to work on the stage, as a help behind
the scenes and eventually as an actress. In time Theodora matured into a beautiful women and she was
using that to her advantage. She was said to use her body as a prop on the stage, often with little or no
clothing on. Eventually she started to take advantage of her looks off stage and was said to have
numerous lovers who paid to see her. But throughout all of her questionable years Theodora never lost
sight of her goals, she never stopped looking for an opportunity to become something more, and
eventually all her hard work payed off, she was summoned to the palace to see the soon to be emperor;

Biblical Historians Learn More And More About The Ancient...
As historians learn more and more about the ancient world, biblical scholars are required to look at
their text and fit it into a historical framework. No longer is it a respectable practice to take what is
written in the ancient script and assume that daily life functions exactly as it is spoken of in the text.
Scholars are now questioning a variety of different aspects in this Jewish work. Thankfully, as the
field of archaeology becomes more and more a source of information, biblical scholars can use it to
place biblical history into its correct framework. Although this paper has the potential to interact with
a variety of tels to demonstrate the necessity of archaeology in understanding daily life, will not.
Instead, it shall focus on Tel Halif as an important excavation site, because of the window it provides
to the ancient world, particularly Biblical history. This will be demonstrated by detailing the tel s
geography, periods of occupation, excavations including significant finds, and connection to the
Hebrew Bible.
