Death as a Theme in the Writings of Emily Dickinson Essay
Emily Dickinson Paper
Alex Lesnick

Period 1
Written word is perhaps the most powerful medium that humans have created to express their
thoughts. A person can express a myriad of emotions through pen and paper, ranging from hope and
happiness to morbid obsessions and anxiety. Written words, unlike spoken words, are for eternity.
Once a thought is written down, anyone can read it, interpret it, ponder it, or question it, until it is
destroyed. On the other hand, if a thought is spoken, it exists only for a second and then exists only in
the minds of the one who uttered it and those who heard it. Only those who were present can interpret,
question, or ponder that thought. If the paper or whatever material a thought ... Show more content on

Unloved by her mother, abandoned by her girl friends, devalued as a female, discouraged in her
literary aspirations, importuned to accept a religion that offered her no haven, she felt herself a
seething volcano. (Cody, 273) This poem is combination of two of Emily s main themes, death and
nature. The owner, most likely, refers to Death, who came to take Emily to her immortality.
Knowledge of Puritan religious beliefs showed that there was a belief that spirits and demons

Stereotypes In I Am Sam
In the movie I am Sam the main character, Sam, is affected by autism and mental retardation. A person
affected by autism could show a number of different character traits. Some of the characteristics that I
noticed Sam portrayed that would be common of someone affected by autism were; repetitive body
movements, insistence on sticking to routines, limited understanding of non verbal communication,
stereotyped and repetitive use of language, impulsivity, and compulsive behavior just to name a
handful. I think that the actor Sean Penn does a good job at portraying a man that falls on the autism
spectrum. I think it is important to understand that no two people with a disability are going to be the
same.
Throughout the movie Sam experiences family, social, and occupational issues that are very realistic
for someone with a disability. The whole movie revolves around a family issue that is unlikely yet
could be a very real possibility for a person with a disability. A person who is disabled but self
sufficient enough to live on their own could potentially end up having a child depending on their
personal choices. Sam s dad was never in his life, his mom got sick, and he became institutionalized
until he was of age to live on his own. The movie does not give much information on his prior support
system or how he transitioned from the institution to becoming self sufficient. I believe that Sam s
situation reflects back on a question we discussed in class. Should people with mental

French Republican Calendar Dbq Essay
During the French Revolution, the National Convention created a new calendar in 1793 based on the
beliefs and thoughts of the revolutionists. This French Republican Calendar ended Christian holidays
and included new ones that celebrated the overthrow of an absolutist ruler. Although generally well
received by Republicans, the working class and some Catholics detested the calendar, as they thought
it was abhorrent and against the Christian faith. The government of France adopted this new calendar
in order to promote the morals of the revolution and break from their past despotism. While these
radical changes in France seemed meant for the people, the working class and some Republicans
viewed it as an oppressive act by the government to increase ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Denis stood against the calendar and its removal of classic Christian holidays (Doc 5). This
dechristianization of France and arrival of new celebrations that rejoiced revolutionary values instead
of pious ones disgusted many churchgoers. Different festivals were now named after events in the
French Revolution or after nature, which hinted at the impending Romantic Movement in France.
Since the National Convention saw this resistance to a different calendar without Catholic morals,
they attempted to make it as appealing as they possibly could by associating the new months with
beautiful women (Doc 3). Much like how clothing stylists today use attractive models to advertise
their designs, the government created engravings of the calendar featuring gorgeous mascots to
promote it. With this appealing campaign, the changed calendar appeared less threatening and
outrageous. However, some citizens of France, such as a government official from Steenwerck,
Picardy, ordered for even more eradication of signs of the monarchial regime (Doc 6). If any sign of
the old government existed in the church other than the symbols of the Revolution, it seemed
dishonorable, as some Radical Republicans wanted complete destruction of their past life. They
associated these Christian holidays and the church as a direct connection to despotism

A Rhetorical Analysis Of By Gimme Shelter By The Rolling...
Gimme Shelter by The Rolling Stones is influential because it talks about the chaos surrounding the
Vietnam War and protests concerning the war. The Rolling Stones believe that the chaos of war has
spread outside the realms of war as was traditionally known. The Rolling Stones have never shyed
away from controversy so a politically charged song was not inconcievable. Gimme Shelter was
written and released in 1969 in the thick of the Vietnam War and the height of it s subsequent protest.
The Vietnam War was known as The Living Room War because it was the first consistently televised
war and with the increased presence of television in culture avoiding coverage of the war and its
subsequent protests was impossible. Mick Jagger speaks to this ... Show more content on

In Gimme Shelter , The Rolling Stones sing, see the fire is sweeping our very street today , this shows
the frenzy and the extent of war protests in the late sixties. Prior to 1965, opposition to the Vietnam
War was primarily a leftist view but due to efforts by returning vetrans and media publications a broad
majority of Americans felt indifferent towards involvement in the war. High profile figures such as
Robert Kennedy, Martin Luther King Jr., Jane Fonda, Muhhamed Ali, and John Lennon had all been
outspoken opponents of the war. American religious groups took a pascifist view and called for peace
as soon as possible. In 1968 there were 221 protests at 101 universities as over 16,000 Americans were
killed in Vietnam during that year and public awareness of atrocities committed by the United States
in Vietnam was heightened. By the end of the 1960 s protesting had become violent as indicated by
the line in Gimme Shelter , gimme shelter or i m going to fade away which speaks to the feeling of
danger and closeness to the war in citizen s daily lives and the need for escapement. A faction of the

Layers Of Airport Security
Identifying terrorists at airports is a very difficult task for homeland security professionals since
terrorists can blend in very well with the more than 650 million law abiding passengers that travel
every year via U.S. airports (United States Government Accountability Office, 2014). The security
layered approach is a security strategy that helps reduce the risk of a terrorist infiltrating into an
airport by employing a wide range of tools and programs that can enhance airport security (Hoggan,
2012). The numerous layers of security are designed to be able to prevent, identify, and stop a terrorist
attack in case one of the previous security layers failed to do so (Cason, Lu, Schreckengast, 2010, pg.
88). Each security layer has their ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This strategy allows DHS to be able identify suspicious individuals before they even arrive to the
airport. The names of passengers are being matched against the database when the passengers book
their flights prior to arriving to the airport, which is more time and cost effective for DHS than having
to identify suspicious individuals among large crowds of people at airports.
As mention above, all layers of security have some weak points and the Secure Flight program is not
the exception. It may be very difficult for DHS to be able to effectively screen suspicious individuals
without disrupting the flow of passengers since the screenings of suspicious individuals may take
longer in comparison to those passengers who do not pose a threat or are not considered suspicious.
Therefore to combat the Achilles heel of the Secure Flight program, DHS has created the TSA pre
check program. The TSA pre check is a program in which passengers, usually those passengers who
travel frequently, voluntarily submit themselves to extensive background investigations and if the
passenger is able to meet the requirements posted by DHS, then the passenger will be allowed to go
through expedite screenings when they travel as the passenger will be considered by DHS a Trusted
passenger

Risk Factors In EC-IC Bypass Surgery
EC IC bypass surgery is one of technical advances in the medical domain to deal with cerebrovascular

The same concept is applicable in complex surgical procedures. The first application of volume
outcome relationships in the hospital care was reported by Luft in 1979 19.(503167) Still then,
numerous publications show a consistent trend toward hospital case volume predicting superior
outcome in neurosurgery. Amin Hanjani S et al 3 (PMID:16304982) reported the national trends and
in hospital mortality in their study. They pointed out that high volume hospitals had less frequent
adverse discharge disposition (odds ratio 0.54, p = 0.03). Barker FG 2nd et al 4 (PMID:12699540)

The Peloponisian War
The Peloponnesian War was fought between the two leading city states. Athens and Sparta during 431
404 BC. The war started due to the Athenians taking everyones money to buy slaves to create the
Parthenon. When the Spartans grew tired of their greed they united themselves with the other city
states to create an army to stand against Athens. It was a hopeless effort the first years of the war.
Athens had the greatest navy of all time. Even when the Spartans had their borders surrounded they
were just as safe within their walls. The Athenians could come and go as they please and still transport
goods due to their navy. The tides turned in 430 BC when Athens started undergoing a plague. Due to
everyone living so closely together it was easy for the plague to spread. Thanks to the plague the
Spartans were able to gain multiple victories and win the war. ... Show more content on

Forbidden Knowledge In Dr. Faustus And The Machine Stops
The concept of forbidden knowledge is merely a blockade to what lies beyond the wider scope of
human experience. Thus, forbidden knowledge as we know it is nothing more than a liability to the
harsh reality of life. In the case of Never Let Me Go, forbidden knowledge is present in that Kathy is
truly unaware of what life has in store for her. She does not understand the restrictions of her life, nor
how vital her physical body is to the donations of humanity. With that said, the theme of forbidden
knowledge is also present in Dr. Faustus, and The Machine Stops, for the characters in both novels are
equally intent on comprehending what lies beyond their physical realms. While the concept of
forbidden knowledge is present throughout the diverse works of literature, it is also present in my own
life. Not only has forbidden knowledge sparked an interest in my ability to surpass milestones, but it
has also altered my perception of the world as well. Having considered that each of the three novels
depicts the concept of forbidden knowledge, it is quite evident that forbidden knowledge is something
that humans are constantly pursuing.
At any rate, Never Let Me Go, by Kazuo Ishiguro outlines the notion of forbidden knowledge in that
Kathy, Tommy, and Ruth, are all unaware of how detrimental their livelihood is to the well being of
humanity. Throughout the novel, there is a constant feeling of uncertainty, in which the clones are
limited to what they know. For example, the clones

Definition of Graphic Design Graphic design is well known as visual communication where there is a
combination of the art and practice of planning and projecting ideas and experiences with visual and
textual content. The production encompasses identity, publication, advertisements, website graphics
and product packaging (Cezzar, n.d.). According to Jessica Helfand, an American designer, author and
educator, had a definition about graphic design as the following:
Graphic design is a visual language uniting harmony and balance, color and light, scale and tension,
form and content. But it is also an idiomatic language, a language of cues and puns and symbols and
allusions, of cultural references and perceptual inferences and that challenge both the intellect and the
eye (Helfand, cited in Shaughnessy, 2008) In other words, it could be said that graphic design helps to
form the unique identity of specific subjects. From Helfand s perspective, graphic design is not only
aesthetic and communicative territory, but also a language in visual and idiomatic that graphic
designers are required to learn through education and experience. ii. What does a graphic designer do

Statistical Methods in Measuring Corporate Performance
The purpose of this paper is to provide an overview of commonly used statistical data in the
measurement of corporate performance by examining various models and methods.
Corporate performance can be defined as fundamental measures of organizational aptitude used to
assess the health of the organization and to provide focused direction to operations while supporting
managers. In order to measure the company s intangible assets such as customer relationships, internal
processes, and employee learning and development while aligning the corporation s overall business
strategy, statistical analysis of performance measurement data must be utilized.

Each is a reaction to the findings of the one before until a pattern can be observed. This is also rarely
used in performance measurement.
Probability Distributions
Range and distributions depend upon the amount of data available. The information sought in
performance measurement is usually continuous, that is, measurable and therefore denoted as f(x).
Since the probability or distribution of possible probabilities is continuous, the likelihood that the
probability is any specific point estimate is really zero. The range for probability then depends on the
level of valid, available information.
A probability distribution indicates all values that a random variable can assume and shows the
likelihood of occurrence. By examining distributions of data, important characteristics such as shape,
location, variability, and unusual values can be detected. The conclusion as to the relationships
between different variables can then be generated from the observation of patterns in data.
An example of a normal distribution test is the Gauss curve. The bell shaped curve represents the odds
of each outcome on the range of several outcomes. In a normal distribution observations are
distributed symmetrically around the mean, 68% of all values under the curve lie within one standard
deviation of the mean and 95% lie within two standard deviations3. This is good for intervallic
continuous variables.
Another type of distribution is done when the results are not ranged along a

Duties Of A Dea Agent Essay
The profession I have chosen in the Police Law Enforcement category of criminal justice is a Drug
Enforcement Administration agent. This job requires dealing with all major drug offenders, such as
drug trafficking and major drug trades. DEA agents work for the U.S. Drug Enforcement

The duties of a DEA agent change based on the current drug issues. Some of the duties that an agent
may be asked to perform include investigating new drugs emerging in communities, or gathering
evidence for a case. Various agents are also sent undercover to accumulate information on expected
drug leaders. Additionally agents have the job of transporting potentially dangerous suspect and

The Effects Of Alcohol And Drugs On Americ From A Gender...
The History of Alcohol and Drug Abuse in America: From a Gender and Social Perspective
In examining the use and abuse of alcohol and drugs, many of the studies often focus upon
demographics that are predominantly concerned with a person s socio economic status. However, in
actuality, one s gender played a significant role as well, not necessarily because of biological issues,
but due to social norms and so forth. In order to gain a full understanding about the pathways for
alcohol and drugs, it s necessary to examine its evolving history in the United States from the past few
centuries and the roles of wealth and social class, social norms, and availability in combination with
gender differences. It will demonstrate the fact that each gender has been more susceptible to using
some of these specific substances at differing rates and that drug use that is illegal today was once
considered to be normal. The history of alcohol use in the United States is actually quite different than
many people would think. Throughout most of the history of the United States, even going as far back
as the Colonial period, alcohol use was mostly relegated to males. Not only did males mainly consume
alcohol, but it was not often abused. In fact, the use of colonial America was governed by legal and
moral sanctions which maintained a norm of moderate drinking (Gusfield 1986). Before the American
Revolution took place, drinking was not an issue socially, as society was very orderly.

immune response is activated by chemical properties of the antigen.
Adaptive immunity refers to antigen specific immune response. The adaptive immune response is

Happiness Vs Happiness
Happiness is an emotion that many individuals try to search for throughout their lives, whereas people
view happiness as an essential factor in living a quality life. All over the world, there are individuals
who believe that they can find true joy through distancing oneself from social interactions and by
living life independently. Many believe that this is true because you are allowed to make your own
choices when living independently. When we are independent, we tend to make choices that surround
ourselves. In addition, the choices that we make as independent individuals tends to be selfish and
egocentric. To this, these choices are selfish because we are independent and only worry about our
own selves. Although living life independently may seem as a road to happiness, it is not the way to
live. An individual should live life compassionately and surround themselves with people they cherish.
To live life compassionately, we should be understanding of other individual s and show empathy.
Each and every individual experiences different upbringings that make us unique. Often when we re
uncompassionate, we tend to misunderstand other individuals because we hold them up to our own
moral standards. Whenever you feel like criticizing anyone.... remember that all the people in this
world haven t had the advantages that you ve had (Fitzgerald 1). Without compassion, we are quick to
assume and judge other individuals, whereas we only think of ourselves. When being consumed with
our own thoughts and own well being, we become self centered individuals with our default settings
on. In This Is Water, Wallace defines these default settings as the, unconscious belief that I am the
center of the world and that my immediate needs... determine the world s priorities (Wallace 236).
Contrary to the thoughts of self centered individuals, we are not the center of the world. As individuals
that live in a world with an abundant amount of other individuals, it s essential to not maintain an aura
of selfishness.
While it is true that living compassionately isn t always easy, a compassionate lifestyle is still essential
to develop a kindhearted character. Those who oppose a life of compassion may argue that to feel
emotion and

Rap Culture And The Culture Of Rap And Its Culture
Rap and its culture how it has and still is changing the world
Nathan Campbell
Rockford Lutheran
Has Hip hop and the artists involved changed society and how people view business, social norms,
fashion and other things of that sort in the U.S.? Ever wonder why a genre of music that started in the
1970s in a small area in New York is now seen and heard everywhere? Rap music has changed the
world in many ways with its fashion, business, and their points of view. Even if you don t think it right
off the bat music changed many people s minds and beliefs even if they don t like the music.
With the amount of resource that these rappers have it has been very easy for the artists and the
managers to gain exposure and anything else they put their minds to. Great business minds such as
Sean Combs, Kanye West and Dr.Dre are just three of many examples of people who took advantage
of rap as more than just music, but a way change the world forever. Now they can afford to wear the
most luxurious clothes and make more money, why shouldn t they take advantage and tell the world
how to do the same?
It s starting to become more and more known just rapping isn t enough to pay the bills. Many rappers
have broke off into other money making ventures. It s crazy to think about the impact a rapper can
have in the business world along with the music also. Sean Combs also known as Puff Daddy is a
perfect example of this. He realized right away he no longer wanted to attend

Justin Jackson, from Houston, Texas was a former forward for the UNC men s basketball team. Before
his years at the University of North Carolina, he spent many years playing for his high school team

Steven Johnson Watching Tv Makes You Smarter Analysis
In Steven Johnson s persuasive essay Watching Tv Makes You Smarter, he defies what our culture
teaches us about television. Our society teaches that television is making our youth dumb and that our
culture enjoys the simple pleasures so that is what the media companies are feeding us with. But,
Johnson states that based on what the show 24 suggests, the exact opposite is happening: the culture is
getting more cognitively demanding, not less (1). The growing interest of TV programs with complex
mental faculties involves three primary elements: multiple threading, flashing arrows and social
networks (2). Multi threading in the media world began in 1981 with the arrival of the show Hill

Suburbs In Australia
Finding the right home for you is a lot of work, even if you find the perfect house. If the
neighbourhood is not what you want then a potentially perfect property is a write off. Thankfully,
Australia has a great deal of options when it comes to good neighbourhoods. Suburbs in Australia
come in a wide variety of shapes, sizes and styles to fit all tastes. This post will provide a quick
rundown of some of Australia s up and coming neighbourhoods that you should be keeping an eye on
if you re looking to buy a home in the near future.
Adelaide

You can expect a drier climate with cold winters, but do not let this deter you. Suburbs in Ainslie are
perfect for families looking to settle down. Alternatively, Braddon and Civic are great suburbs for
single residents.
Melbourne
Housing a population of around four million, Melbourne is the second largest city in Australia. This
city also features some of Australia s best nightlife and has a deep love for sports and the arts. It is,
arguably, one of the best places to live in the world when it comes to culture. As far as suburbs go,
families should look at Camberwell. However, for a little more culture then consider Fitzroy.
Perth
Known for a consistently warm climate and equally warm population, Perth has a lot to offer
considering how isolated it is from the rest of Australia. Look north or west for the affluent suburbs in
Perth, such as Nedlands and Mosman Park.
Sydney
Sydney is arguably Australia s most popular destination, with scenic landmarks and gorgeous beaches
scattered across a bustling metropolis. Being Australia s biggest city means a lot of options in
neighbourhoods. For the younger crowd, Inner West is a great area with a vibrant crowd. For the
family type, you will struggle to find a better suburb than the Northern

Essay On Eugenics In North Carolina
Eugenics in North Carolina: A dark past
Forced sterilization and Eugenics are terms you would associate with Hitler s heinous World War II
crimes. Those terms were not isolated to war time Europe. From 1929 until 1977 Eugenics was a
terrible part of North Carolina History that used selective breeding to extinguish lower class mentality
and guarantee future generations. The State is trying to make amends to the victims of the past. For
almost 50 years over 7,600 victims were evaluated harshly and then coerced or sterilized against their
will. Eugenics scientists have used this method to target what they consider as the undesirables,
mainly unwed, black females, and also the mentally disabled in North Carolina. This was done under
the pretense to make future American generations stronger and smarter. Eugenics still negatively
affects the people of North Carolina today. Scientists believed that through selective breeding future
generations would be able to reach its full potential. Charles Darwin s brother was one of the scientists
who firmly believed in the Eugenics process at the time. They truly believed that they were doing

though, the damage had already been done. One victim said I think my rights have been revoked in a
way, it s just like if you go to prison for something that you ain t done (Gannon para. 3). This theme of
regret and injustice carries on for most victims still alive today. In recent efforts to right the wrongs of
the past the state has started the process to compensate the victims of sterilization. Once a legitimate
case has been established and approved, victims could potentially receive up to $50,000 from the State
of North Carolina. This in no way reverses the tragedy that they dealt with but it is a start to apologize

Essay on General Motors
General Motors was founded in September of 1908 by William Durant during a time that there were
less than 8,000 in the United States. Durant was already known in Flint, Michigan for his horse drawn
vehicles. At its inception GM held only the Buick Motor Company, but in a matter of years would
acquire more than 20 companies including Oldsmobile, Cadillac, and Oakland, today known as
Pontiac. (History Heritage Creation, 2014) General Motors set the tone in the automobile industry
with design, production and marketing. With the philosophy and strategy of a car for every purse and

Factors Affecting Voice Differences
Before puberty all voices, male or female, sound alike. But as the hormones come into play, they
cause the male larynx to become larger and the vocal folds lengthen and thicken. Not only are there
internal factors that play a role in the voice changing there are also physical factors, depending on the
height and weight of an individual that could affect the tone, pitch and frequency. The purpose of this
assignment was to better understand these differences.
As defined in our class manual, voice onset time (VOT) refers to the time difference between a voiced
stop closure and a voiceless stop. It is determined by the articulatory blockage at the beginning of
vocal fold vibration for the following vowel. Among the various factors of VOT variations include;
phonetic context, place of articulation, speech tempo, and speakers gender. For voiceless stops,
women display longer VOT than men. For voiced stops however, the results are rather mixed. Which
makes sense if you look at the characteristics of mine and Marks h d words, you will notice there are
multiple differences within our tokens regarding formant frequencies. However we show similarities
with our durations. So I wondered at first if this had anything to do with the tokens being the same
word, or if it was the vowel production. Differences between the speech of men and women relates to
the formant patterns associated with vowel production. Although men have low frequency vowel
formants than women, the differences in

Analysis Of The Book Fibonacci Rabbits
Leonardo Fibonacci was an Italian mathematician who lived from 1170 to 1240. While Fibonacci was
growing up, he was sent to study mathematics with an Arab master. Once he finished studying, he
began to travel to other countries to study their mathematics and calculations (Encyclopedia
Britannica). In 1202, Fibonacci published his book that was entitled Liber Abaci or Book of the
Counting. In this book, he used Hindu Arabic numbers. This is the number system that we are using
today. Prior to his writing, many people did not know or use this system of numbers. In the beginning,
Fibonacci talked about how this system worked, basically how to use, write, and compute with these
numbers. He taught this by focusing on real life examples ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The formula used is F_n= F_(n 2)+F_(n 1). In order to calculate the nth term another formula, known
as Binet s formula, is used. It states F_n=(φ ( φ)^( n))/√5 where φ=(1+√5)/2≈1.61803. The Fibonacci
sequence has led to many mathematical advances over time, and it is used in many different areas of
life. It is an important part of life due to its ever present appearances throughout nature, mathematics,
pop culture, and business. The Fibonacci Sequence is most important in the world of mathematics. It
is found in other discoveries like Pascal s triangle and Cassini identities.
One area of mathematics that overlaps with the Fibonacci Sequence is the Golden Ratio which is
typically used when discussing the ratio of distances (wolfram alpha). The ratio is approximately
1.6180. It is found by this formula φ= (1+√5)/2≈1.61803 . The ratio has been surrounded by mystery
since the time of the ancient Greeks. Many scholars look at the Parthenon statues (built by Phidias,
from 490 430 BC) and believe that they were built using the Golden Ratio. Euclid, during his lifetime,
became the first to define this ratio. He defined it as extreme and mean ratio (Wikipedia). Credit is
generally given to Phidias hence the symbol phi is used when denoting the ratio (UIUC). The Golden
Ratio is similar to the ratio between each consecutive Fibonacci number.
Fibonacci numbers also overlap with Pascal s Triangle, which is found on the right. The triangle is
formed by adding the

Columbine Film Techniques
Michael Moore is an American documentary filmmaker, who is best known for his line of
controversial documentaries exploring and addressing political and social issues in the US. Moore has
a number of films, including 9/11: Fahrenheit, Sicko and Roger and Me for example. In particular, he

During this film he raises and explores the issue of gun violence in the United States and uses a
variety of techniques to showcase his thinking. In the two excerpts Columbine and Fear of Black Men

influence as there are many other factors that can contribute to its formation. Within this essay I will
discuss the relationship between the two and consider how criminological theory has been used to

Biodiesel And Its Effects On Our Environment
Biodiesel is a fuel similar to diesel derived from a plant source, like corn, used vegetable oil, or even
algae. This biofuel is created from renewable resources to replace the low source of fossil fuels that is
unfortunately nonrenewable. Because of this situation society was basically coerced into finding a
substitute. While the price is getting higher due to recent events between the United States (U.S. )and
Third World Countries. Due to these situations society had to come up with a cheaper, renewable
source of fuel. Biodiesel is the key to releasing the chains of restraint that have been placed upon
citizens by those third world countries. Society can take that crop, oil, or pond scum to make a
biodiesel we can save our environment, and economy. As said before, it is the key to the public s
restraint, as well as our future and fresh air. Biodiesel will also help with the noise pollution because
we will be using less of the oil well boom to get the crude oil. Another bonus would be there would be
less fracking which means less harmful chemical and natural gas getting into people s water supply.
Meaning there will be less flammable water coming out of a household faucet. Because when they
frack using water with a thickening agent of some kind to help create pressure. that pressure is used to
crack the shale rock that is holding the natural gas. When that gas is released it contaminates nearby

The Leadership Style Of Leadership
When one thinks of successful leadership, words like power, authority, and control often come to
mind. Examining leadership in detail reveals that many different leadership styles exist. Some leaders
may be authoritarian, where their rules are law and enforced in a utilitarian fashion. Others may prefer
to lead in a more democratic manor, where employees help make decisions and feel involved in
workplace happenings. Robert Greenleaf, who at the time was an executive at AT T, developed
another style, servant leadership (Marquis, 2014). Though the terms servant and leader may seem
paradoxical when paired together, his style of leadership focuses on the idea that leaders should serve
those who work for them. This does not mean catering to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In one of the lessons, the characteristics of good leaders are discussed. Honest and trustworthy, good
role model, caring, committed, good listener, able to hold people accountable, respectful, encouraging,
positive, enthusiastic, and appreciative are all agreed upon attributes (Hunter, 1998). While all of these
qualities are important, trustworthiness, respectfulness, and appreciation for others are essential for
nurses to possess in order to be servant leaders. Trustworthiness Trustworthiness encompasses
veracity, one of the principles of ethical reasoning (Marquis, 2014). The ability to tell the truth is key
in interacting with both patients and coworkers. Being viewed as someone who is trustworthy helps to
establish effective leadership. Employees who view a leader as honest are more likely to be honest in
return, while patients who trust their caregivers can be confident in their treatment (Marquis, 2014).
Advocating for a patient further shows trustworthiness by assuring him or her that the nurse values the
patient, and is working to attain the best possible outcome. Being trustworthy also means showing
humility in certain instances, like being able to admit when mistakes have been made or a situation
could have been handled differently.

A Rhetorical Analysis Of Mr. Edward O. Wilson
The subject of environmentalists is one that is just asking for a series of childish bickering amongst
fully grown adults. No one can ever agree to disagree because everyone wants to be right. Of course,
that is impossible, but God forbid that people just come to a reasonable agreement to leave opinions as
they are, opinions. Mr. Edward O. Wilson does a very good job illustrating how pointless these
political arguments are. How does he do this? He simply writes his own passages, setting himself in
the shoes of both of the opposing parties. In the first passage, the one that is in the point of view of an
anti environmentalist, immediately starts off with name calling. Which instantly categorizes this
passage as juvenal satire. This passage proceeds to call environmental supporters a series of negative
slang terms. As the passage continues, it is claimed that these enviros are part of some sort of
government conspiracy. Their aim is to expand government, especially the federal government. They
want environmental laws and regulatory surveillance to create government supported jobs for their
kind of bureaucrats, lawyers, and consultants. In continuation of Wilson s writing, he proceeds to write

too prideful. Arguments between opposing parties are useless and a waste of time. The only thing to
come of these quarrels is bitterness and anger. It s unproductive to waste one s time on something that
cannot and will not change. As frustrating as that is, that is the reality, and it is about time that we as

  • 2. Death as a Theme in the Writings of Emily Dickinson Essay Emily Dickinson Paper Alex Lesnick May 7, 2002 Period 1 Written word is perhaps the most powerful medium that humans have created to express their thoughts. A person can express a myriad of emotions through pen and paper, ranging from hope and happiness to morbid obsessions and anxiety. Written words, unlike spoken words, are for eternity. Once a thought is written down, anyone can read it, interpret it, ponder it, or question it, until it is destroyed. On the other hand, if a thought is spoken, it exists only for a second and then exists only in the minds of the one who uttered it and those who heard it. Only those who were present can interpret, question, or ponder that thought. If the paper or whatever material a thought ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Unloved by her mother, abandoned by her girl friends, devalued as a female, discouraged in her literary aspirations, importuned to accept a religion that offered her no haven, she felt herself a seething volcano. (Cody, 273) This poem is combination of two of Emily s main themes, death and nature. The owner, most likely, refers to Death, who came to take Emily to her immortality. Knowledge of Puritan religious beliefs showed that there was a belief that spirits and demons wondered throughout the woods. Another interpretation of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Stereotypes In I Am Sam In the movie I am Sam the main character, Sam, is affected by autism and mental retardation. A person affected by autism could show a number of different character traits. Some of the characteristics that I noticed Sam portrayed that would be common of someone affected by autism were; repetitive body movements, insistence on sticking to routines, limited understanding of non verbal communication, stereotyped and repetitive use of language, impulsivity, and compulsive behavior just to name a handful. I think that the actor Sean Penn does a good job at portraying a man that falls on the autism spectrum. I think it is important to understand that no two people with a disability are going to be the same. Throughout the movie Sam experiences family, social, and occupational issues that are very realistic for someone with a disability. The whole movie revolves around a family issue that is unlikely yet could be a very real possibility for a person with a disability. A person who is disabled but self sufficient enough to live on their own could potentially end up having a child depending on their personal choices. Sam s dad was never in his life, his mom got sick, and he became institutionalized until he was of age to live on his own. The movie does not give much information on his prior support system or how he transitioned from the institution to becoming self sufficient. I believe that Sam s situation reflects back on a question we discussed in class. Should people with mental ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. French Republican Calendar Dbq Essay During the French Revolution, the National Convention created a new calendar in 1793 based on the beliefs and thoughts of the revolutionists. This French Republican Calendar ended Christian holidays and included new ones that celebrated the overthrow of an absolutist ruler. Although generally well received by Republicans, the working class and some Catholics detested the calendar, as they thought it was abhorrent and against the Christian faith. The government of France adopted this new calendar in order to promote the morals of the revolution and break from their past despotism. While these radical changes in France seemed meant for the people, the working class and some Republicans viewed it as an oppressive act by the government to increase ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Denis stood against the calendar and its removal of classic Christian holidays (Doc 5). This dechristianization of France and arrival of new celebrations that rejoiced revolutionary values instead of pious ones disgusted many churchgoers. Different festivals were now named after events in the French Revolution or after nature, which hinted at the impending Romantic Movement in France. Since the National Convention saw this resistance to a different calendar without Catholic morals, they attempted to make it as appealing as they possibly could by associating the new months with beautiful women (Doc 3). Much like how clothing stylists today use attractive models to advertise their designs, the government created engravings of the calendar featuring gorgeous mascots to promote it. With this appealing campaign, the changed calendar appeared less threatening and outrageous. However, some citizens of France, such as a government official from Steenwerck, Picardy, ordered for even more eradication of signs of the monarchial regime (Doc 6). If any sign of the old government existed in the church other than the symbols of the Revolution, it seemed dishonorable, as some Radical Republicans wanted complete destruction of their past life. They associated these Christian holidays and the church as a direct connection to despotism ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. A Rhetorical Analysis Of By Gimme Shelter By The Rolling... Gimme Shelter by The Rolling Stones is influential because it talks about the chaos surrounding the Vietnam War and protests concerning the war. The Rolling Stones believe that the chaos of war has spread outside the realms of war as was traditionally known. The Rolling Stones have never shyed away from controversy so a politically charged song was not inconcievable. Gimme Shelter was written and released in 1969 in the thick of the Vietnam War and the height of it s subsequent protest. The Vietnam War was known as The Living Room War because it was the first consistently televised war and with the increased presence of television in culture avoiding coverage of the war and its subsequent protests was impossible. Mick Jagger speaks to this ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In Gimme Shelter , The Rolling Stones sing, see the fire is sweeping our very street today , this shows the frenzy and the extent of war protests in the late sixties. Prior to 1965, opposition to the Vietnam War was primarily a leftist view but due to efforts by returning vetrans and media publications a broad majority of Americans felt indifferent towards involvement in the war. High profile figures such as Robert Kennedy, Martin Luther King Jr., Jane Fonda, Muhhamed Ali, and John Lennon had all been outspoken opponents of the war. American religious groups took a pascifist view and called for peace as soon as possible. Layers Of Airport Security Identifying terrorists at airports is a very difficult task for homeland security professionals since terrorists can blend in very well with the more than 650 million law abiding passengers that travel every year via U.S. airports (United States Government Accountability Office, 2014). The security layered approach is a security strategy that helps reduce the risk of a terrorist infiltrating into an airport by employing a wide range of tools and programs that can enhance airport security (Hoggan, 2012). The numerous layers of security are designed to be able to prevent, identify, and stop a terrorist attack in case one of the previous security layers failed to do so (Cason, Lu, Schreckengast, 2010, pg. 88). The names of passengers are being matched against the database when the passengers book their flights prior to arriving to the airport, which is more time and cost effective for DHS than having to identify suspicious individuals among large crowds of people at airports. As mention above, all layers of security have some weak points and the Secure Flight program is not the exception. It may be very difficult for DHS to be able to effectively screen suspicious individuals without disrupting the flow of passengers since the screenings of suspicious individuals may take longer in comparison to those passengers who do not pose a threat or are not considered suspicious. Therefore to combat the Achilles heel of the Secure Flight program, DHS has created the TSA pre check program. The TSA pre check is a program in which passengers, usually those passengers who travel frequently, voluntarily submit themselves to extensive background investigations and if the passenger is able to meet the requirements posted by DHS, then the passenger will be allowed to go through expedite screenings when they travel as the passenger will be considered by DHS a Trusted passenger ... According to Jessica Helfand, an American designer, author and educator, had a definition about graphic design as the following: Graphic design is a visual language uniting harmony and balance, color and light, scale and tension, form and content. But it is also an idiomatic language, a language of cues and puns and symbols and allusions, of cultural references and perceptual inferences and that challenge both the intellect and the eye (Helfand, cited in Shaughnessy, 2008) In other words, it could be said that graphic design helps to form the unique identity of specific subjects. Probability Distributions Range and distributions depend upon the amount of data available. The information sought in performance measurement is usually continuous, that is, measurable and therefore denoted as f(x). Since the probability or distribution of possible probabilities is continuous, the likelihood that the probability is any specific point estimate is really zero. The range for probability then depends on the level of valid, available information. A probability distribution indicates all values that a random variable can assume and shows the likelihood of occurrence. By examining distributions of data, important characteristics such as shape, location, variability, and unusual values can be detected. The conclusion as to the relationships between different variables can then be generated from the observation of patterns in data. An example of a normal distribution test is the Gauss curve. The bell shaped curve represents the odds of each outcome on the range of several outcomes. In a normal distribution observations are distributed symmetrically around the mean, 68% of all values under the curve lie within one standard deviation of the mean and 95% lie within two standard deviations3. The History of Alcohol and Drug Abuse in America: From a Gender and Social Perspective In examining the use and abuse of alcohol and drugs, many of the studies often focus upon demographics that are predominantly concerned with a person s socio economic status. However, in actuality, one s gender played a significant role as well, not necessarily because of biological issues, but due to social norms and so forth. In order to gain a full understanding about the pathways for alcohol and drugs, it s necessary to examine its evolving history in the United States from the past few centuries and the roles of wealth and social class, social norms, and availability in combination with gender differences. It will demonstrate the fact that each gender has been more susceptible to using some of these specific substances at differing rates and that drug use that is illegal today was once considered to be normal. The history of alcohol use in the United States is actually quite different than many people would think. Throughout most of the history of the United States, even going as far back as the Colonial period, alcohol use was mostly relegated to males. Not only did males mainly consume alcohol, but it was not often abused. In fact, the use of colonial America was governed by legal and moral sanctions which maintained a norm of moderate drinking (Gusfield 1986). • 21. Happiness Vs Happiness Happiness is an emotion that many individuals try to search for throughout their lives, whereas people view happiness as an essential factor in living a quality life. All over the world, there are individuals who believe that they can find true joy through distancing oneself from social interactions and by living life independently. Many believe that this is true because you are allowed to make your own choices when living independently. When we are independent, we tend to make choices that surround ourselves. In addition, the choices that we make as independent individuals tends to be selfish and egocentric. To this, these choices are selfish because we are independent and only worry about our own selves. Although living life independently may seem as a road to happiness, it is not the way to live. An individual should live life compassionately and surround themselves with people they cherish. To live life compassionately, we should be understanding of other individual s and show empathy. Each and every individual experiences different upbringings that make us unique. Often when we re uncompassionate, we tend to misunderstand other individuals because we hold them up to our own moral standards. Whenever you feel like criticizing anyone.... remember that all the people in this world haven t had the advantages that you ve had (Fitzgerald 1). Without compassion, we are quick to assume and judge other individuals, whereas we only think of ourselves. When being consumed with our own thoughts and own well being, we become self centered individuals with our default settings on. In This Is Water, Wallace defines these default settings as the, unconscious belief that I am the center of the world and that my immediate needs... determine the world s priorities (Wallace 236). Contrary to the thoughts of self centered individuals, we are not the center of the world. As individuals that live in a world with an abundant amount of other individuals, it s essential to not maintain an aura of selfishness. While it is true that living compassionately isn t always easy, a compassionate lifestyle is still essential to develop a kindhearted character. • 26. Essay On Eugenics In North Carolina Eugenics in North Carolina: A dark past Forced sterilization and Eugenics are terms you would associate with Hitler s heinous World War II crimes. Those terms were not isolated to war time Europe. From 1929 until 1977 Eugenics was a terrible part of North Carolina History that used selective breeding to extinguish lower class mentality and guarantee future generations. The State is trying to make amends to the victims of the past. For almost 50 years over 7,600 victims were evaluated harshly and then coerced or sterilized against their will. Eugenics scientists have used this method to target what they consider as the undesirables, mainly unwed, black females, and also the mentally disabled in North Carolina. This was done under the pretense to make future American generations stronger and smarter. Eugenics still negatively affects the people of North Carolina today. Scientists believed that through selective breeding future generations would be able to reach its full potential. One victim said I think my rights have been revoked in a way, it s just like if you go to prison for something that you ain t done (Gannon para. 3). This theme of regret and injustice carries on for most victims still alive today. In recent efforts to right the wrongs of the past the state has started the process to compensate the victims of sterilization. • 28. Factors Affecting Voice Differences Before puberty all voices, male or female, sound alike. But as the hormones come into play, they cause the male larynx to become larger and the vocal folds lengthen and thicken. Not only are there internal factors that play a role in the voice changing there are also physical factors, depending on the height and weight of an individual that could affect the tone, pitch and frequency. The purpose of this assignment was to better understand these differences. As defined in our class manual, voice onset time (VOT) refers to the time difference between a voiced stop closure and a voiceless stop. It is determined by the articulatory blockage at the beginning of vocal fold vibration for the following vowel. Among the various factors of VOT variations include; phonetic context, place of articulation, speech tempo, and speakers gender. For voiceless stops, women display longer VOT than men. For voiced stops however, the results are rather mixed. Which makes sense if you look at the characteristics of mine and Marks h d words, you will notice there are multiple differences within our tokens regarding formant frequencies. However we show similarities with our durations. So I wondered at first if this had anything to do with the tokens being the same word, or if it was the vowel production. Differences between the speech of men and women relates to the formant patterns associated with vowel production. Although men have low frequency vowel formants than women, the differences in ... While Fibonacci was growing up, he was sent to study mathematics with an Arab master. Once he finished studying, he began to travel to other countries to study their mathematics and calculations (Encyclopedia Britannica). In 1202, Fibonacci published his book that was entitled Liber Abaci or Book of the Counting. In this book, he used Hindu Arabic numbers. This is the number system that we are using today. Prior to his writing, many people did not know or use this system of numbers. In the beginning, Fibonacci talked about how this system worked, basically how to use, write, and compute with these numbers. He taught this by focusing on real life examples ... It is an important part of life due to its ever present appearances throughout nature, mathematics, pop culture, and business. The Fibonacci Sequence is most important in the world of mathematics. It is found in other discoveries like Pascal s triangle and Cassini identities. One area of mathematics that overlaps with the Fibonacci Sequence is the Golden Ratio which is typically used when discussing the ratio of distances (wolfram alpha). The ratio is approximately 1.6180. It is found by this formula φ= (1+√5)/2≈1.61803 . The ratio has been surrounded by mystery since the time of the ancient Greeks. Many scholars look at the Parthenon statues (built by Phidias, from 490 430 BC) and believe that they were built using the Golden Ratio. Euclid, during his lifetime, became the first to define this ratio. He defined it as extreme and mean ratio (Wikipedia). Credit is generally given to Phidias hence the symbol phi is used when denoting the ratio (UIUC). The Golden Ratio is similar to the ratio between each consecutive Fibonacci number. • 33. Biodiesel And Its Effects On Our Environment Biodiesel is a fuel similar to diesel derived from a plant source, like corn, used vegetable oil, or even algae. This biofuel is created from renewable resources to replace the low source of fossil fuels that is unfortunately nonrenewable. Because of this situation society was basically coerced into finding a substitute. While the price is getting higher due to recent events between the United States (U.S. )and Third World Countries. Due to these situations society had to come up with a cheaper, renewable source of fuel. Biodiesel is the key to releasing the chains of restraint that have been placed upon citizens by those third world countries. Society can take that crop, oil, or pond scum to make a biodiesel we can save our environment, and economy. As said before, it is the key to the public s restraint, as well as our future and fresh air. Biodiesel will also help with the noise pollution because we will be using less of the oil well boom to get the crude oil. Meaning there will be less flammable water coming out of a household faucet. Examining leadership in detail reveals that many different leadership styles exist. Some leaders may be authoritarian, where their rules are law and enforced in a utilitarian fashion. Robert Greenleaf, who at the time was an executive at AT T, developed another style, servant leadership (Marquis, 2014). Trustworthiness Trustworthiness encompasses veracity, one of the principles of ethical reasoning (Marquis, 2014). The ability to tell the truth is key in interacting with both patients and coworkers. Being viewed as someone who is trustworthy helps to establish effective leadership. Employees who view a leader as honest are more likely to be honest in return, while patients who trust their caregivers can be confident in their treatment (Marquis, 2014). No one can ever agree to disagree because everyone wants to be right. Of course, that is impossible, but God forbid that people just come to a reasonable agreement to leave opinions as they are, opinions. Mr. Edward O. Wilson does a very good job illustrating how pointless these political arguments are. How does he do this? He simply writes his own passages, setting himself in the shoes of both of the opposing parties. In the first passage, the one that is in the point of view of an anti environmentalist, immediately starts off with name calling. Which instantly categorizes this passage as juvenal satire. This passage proceeds to call environmental supporters a series of negative slang terms. As the passage continues, it is claimed that these enviros are part of some sort of government conspiracy. Their aim is to expand government, especially the federal government. They want environmental laws and regulatory surveillance to create government supported jobs for their kind of bureaucrats, lawyers, and consultants.
