The Situation
Virtualization is not New. Why Now for Operations?

  Proven Value
   • Corporate IT experiences the value
   • New capabilities enable a broader group of candidate applications
   • Pilots in Manufacturing Operations have demonstrated value
  Proven Products
   • VMware – Very mature products
   • Microsoft – Technology important to Operations
   • Many other products and partnerships
Why not use Virtualization in Operations?
   • Install a new set of servers with each new application?
   • Legacy software value - R

   • Replacement computers are many times faster – waste?
   • Better management, Backup, Back-out, Reliability …

“Virtualization” Can Mean more than Virtual Servers

How Can Server Virtualization Technology Help?
Costs, Reliability, Operations & Maintenance

  Decrease costs
   • Less hardware – and still run diverse OS and application versions
   • Less: Space, Energy, Maintenance …
  Increase reliability
   • Less to hardware fail
      • Even then, recover easily by redeploying virtual server
   • Isolate mission critical components (create more Virtual Servers)
      • N affected by restart of non-mission critical

  Operations & Maintenance
   • More effective updates, patching and testing
      • Restore test environments and configurations quickly
      • Update, patch and test copies
      • Place online when confident – restore original q

Microsoft, VMware …
Are the Needs of Manufacturing Operations Unique?

Smaller implementations of virtualization (e.g. small
manufacturing control rooms) do not warrant expensive SAN
infrastructures. Local storage solutions make more sense in
these cases. Will your software continue to support local
storage implementation in the long term?

Drivers to adopt virtualization in manufacturing environments
include reduction of technical "churn" of hardware, operating
system and software applications. While virtualization eases
some of this, it also adds to it. Would you consider extending
base hypervisor support (e.g. security and critical patches) so
that a hypervisor version has at least the same useful life as
  the
  th underlying hardware?
