The student effectively uses their reading in their writing. They summarize the key points from three sources (Ethical Consumer Research Association and Triodos Bank 2017; Smith and Jones, 2014; Rogers, 2013; Appleton, 2011) to support their overall argument that business ethics has value as an aspect of business activity and education. The student selects relevant evidence from each source to develop their argument, such as statistical data on the UK ethical sales market and definitions of business ethics. They synthesize ideas from multiple sources to refine their definition of the topic.

Subsidiary Decision-making Autonomy: A Systematic Literature Review of The De...CSCJournals
Over the past decades, subsidiary's autonomy has emerged as a focal point of research concerning Multinational Corporations (MNCs). The concept of autonomy has influenced the four research streams identified by the scholars within the subsidiary-management literature, Strategy-Structure, Headquarters-Subsidiary Relationships, Subsidiary Roles and Subsidiary Development, albeit with a different degree of intensity. However, despite the high number of contributions concerning this theme, only a few have dealt with the elements determining the autonomy of firms belonging to MNCs and a complete systematization of the empirical studies containing sets of variables able to explain subsidiary autonomy is still lacking. Aiming at contributing to fill this gap, a Systematic Literature Review methodology has been implemented to guarantee a rigorous procedure. The main findings of this paper are the identification of the explanatory elements for the autonomy, named differently by scholars during the forty years of this review, such as determinants, variables, or factors, and a further contribution in clustering them according to common characteristics. Research findings contribute to consolidate and synthetize the results into a comprehensive framework, providing the basis for further directions of future research concerning firm autonomy within business groups.

Ethical beliefs govern the rules in which people determine what is right and wrong. The views outline how people should act, behave, live, and make decisions. I will discuss if a student keeping an iPod that is found in the classroom an ethical or unethical act. By providing advice to the student about the situation, relevant facts and characteristics of the ethical issue will envelope. The people involved in the decision process, the alternatives available, and consequences of one’s actions is a critical theme in my work. Finally, I will discuss where to look for additional guidance to assist in resolving the ethical dilemma (Hartman, DesJardins, & MacDonald, 2014). Comment by Scott, Joni: ALWAYS WRITE IN FIRST PERSON – NEVER THIRD PERSON!! Comment by Scott, Joni: This is a requirement in the introduction and worth 5 points!
You should have developed the introduction that shows what you, as the author, will present in the essay. This is a fundamental concept that should be applied to help guide the reader through your work.
The reason, is to introduce students to the concept of anthropomorphism, which may or not be the problem in your work. Nonetheless, this is a good section to help students understand the concept and one of the reasons behind the element.
Anthropomorphism occurs when writers attribute human characteristics or behavior to non-human objects. For example, papers cannot discuss and the text cannot explain.
Ethicality and Implications
In facing an ethical dilemma, people should make the distinction between ethics, morals, values, laws and procedures. Ethics are standards that dictate the correct course of action for a given situation. Morals are a code of conduct to which the majority of the people abide by within society. Values describe ideas that people feel are important. Allen (2012) stated, laws and procedures play a role in establishing the legal course of action to take in regards to an ethical dilemma. Comment by Scott, Joni: When describing information in your text from your research, the information must be presented in the past tense because the work was in the past (i.e., Hitt (2014) stated). Please remember authors initials are never used in the text. . .only in the reference page.
The ethical or unethical issue for the situation is whether or not the student can keep the found iPod. In making the ethical decision in regards to the iPod, one should gather all the facts of the situation. The first fact is where was the iPod found in the classroom? The text indicates the device was on the floor underneath the next desk of the student seat. The device is lost, or the owner may have placed the item under the desk intentionally? Was the device broken or did the object fall out of the trashcan? Did the stud ...

Majority of the contents of the book talk about ethical practices when employees come into contact with external parties such as when selling a good or service, when providing customer services or how business activities such as advertising and the production of goods and provision of services adhere to ethical standards. The source mainly talks about how employees should act as well as how they should achieve market expectations with regards to ethics when selling products and services.
This source is useful for the development of this project in the following ways, it highlights the various areas within businesses where ethical principles and moral standards are mostly practiced. Such areas include production departments as well as customer service. It identifies moral standards within the society that businesses should adhere to. Examples of such moral standards that will be included in my project include, treating customers equally and with fairness. 3. The papers are written by different authors, in markedly different styles. Can you identify what makes these papers "academic" (other than the fact that they are all published in reputable journals)? How do these papers differ from newspaper articles or blogs (that might or might not be written by experts)?
4. What adds credibility to these papers? What makes published papers an academic/scholarly resource as compared to sources like Wall Street Journal, Wikipedia, Investopedia, blogs, etc.?
The following provides my response to both questions:
In observing each of the three papers, it is noted that the differences in style and approach vary between each group of authors. Still, these papers are deemed as “academic works” through which they each meet the criteria to be accepted as such via the peer review process (Cornell University, 2021). Through this process, articles are examined by multiple other scholars, experts, or academic peers to be reviewed and commented on. Once these reviews agree to the validity and contribution to a field of research then they may be published and deemed as scholarly. Moreover, peer reviewed articles (like these) differ than sources collected from news or general interest pieces as they are not written by members of editorial staff or freelance writers (Cornell University, 2021). Per Cornell University (2021), these types of editorials or contributions to a topic generally are written with no specialty assumed and are written with the purpose of providing general information to appeal to a broad audience of concerned citizens.
5. What does this essay exercise teach you in terms of your own writing style, your own approach to research, and what improvements in your style/approach would help you become a better writer?
This essay exercise is teaching me (as I have not completed my essay) that my writing style is subject to change. One thing I learned is that there are many approach styles and each is dictated based on the purpose of the research being conducted. In evaluating each of the three articles, I found that though each article is similar in the field of study the motivation for the research leads the authors to present their research in a way that supports their purpose. For example, one work is presented as case study evaluation, the second was an exploration of a research question, and the third was an expansion of research for supportive information that is presented in the form of a literature review. As such, I observed different ways to present Headings, Abstracts, and Contextual Support. Moving forward, this exposure to different writing styles will help me better organize and tailor my own work for my intended audience. Any thoughts?

A System Approach to Implementing Business Ethics in
the Corporate Workplace
Clifton Clarke Department
of Finance and Business Management, Brooklyn College, City University of New York
[email protected]
Abstract
The current vitriolic discourse over the financial scandals implicating Wall Street and its satellite institutions
dictates a fresh look at strategies intended to eradicate or prevent unethical practices in business activities.
The spate of recently published unethical behavior among business executives in the United States confirms,
unequivocally, that past and current strategies have failed. This paper reviews and evaluates the impact of
some of these strategies. It found that the strategies focus on legislation, written corporate codes of ethics and
assorted activities in business schools. It found that these strategies are largely isolated and missed the fact
that unethical business conduct is systemic, reflecting the ethical lapses of two systems: a public system
(consisting of governmental bodies, business schools, and the general citizenry) and a corporate system
(consisting of boards of directors, executives, managers and employees). It found that there is a significant
gap between the rhetoric of corporate executives and their attention to unethical conduct in the workplace. It
concludes that isolated legislative actions, apathetic business schools’ policies, complacent and complicit
corporate boards, contribute to the failure. It also concludes that, the implementation of business ethics in the
workplace requires a transformation of attitude within and between these systems and posits that a system
approach is the only strategy that can successfully transform these systems and that business schools are
uniquely capable of leading this transformation.

Introduction
Hearings held by a subcommittee of the Banking and Finance Committee of the United States Senate on
certain practices of financial institutions, particularly those practices that might have contributed to the
economic collapse in 2008, revealed the disconnect between the public’s and corporations’ perceptions of
ethical conduct (Hauser 2010). Several of the questions posed to the Chief Executive Officer, and the
Executive Director of Structure Products Group Trading of Goldman Sachs Group, Inc., focused on the
company’s ethics. For example, the senators wanted to know whether it was ethical for the company to sell
investments that its own trading team knew were “worthless”. In their defense, this and other questionable
practices were an integral part of their company’s business model. Similarly, Morganton (2011), of the New

PRELIMINARIES
Introduction: Why Study Business Ethics?
Anand J. Vaidya and Fritz Allhoff
THE WHAT AND WHY OF
BUSINESS ETHICS
What is business ethics, and why study it?
One good way to get an answer to this question is
by taking note of what business is, what ethics is,
and then tying the two together.
Business as will be understood here is the
sum total of the relationships and activities that
surround the trading of goods or services. In most
cases, businesses seek to profit from their activities,
though it is increasingly common for businesses
such as social enterprises to operate as non-profits.
As a category, business includes everything from
the selling of handmade products between two
neighboring villages in India to large-scale multi-
national corporations such as Nike and Microsoft
engaged in global trade. Both the relationships
between individuals involved in any aspect of
business and the relationships between groups—
corporations, divisions of them, unions, etc.—are
important to understanding business as a whole.
Business ethics is important because it is
involved centrally in most people’s lives. Almost
all people are consumers of commercial goods.
Businesses also employ many people, giving them
not only a wage, but in many cases an identity and
an opportunity to express creativity.
Ethics, in its broadest sense, is an investigation
into how humans should live. Ethics is distinct
from law since laws themselves can be objects of
ethical criticism. Within the confines of a moral
investigation, one can inquire as to whether a
legal statute is consistent with morality.¹ For
example, slavery was once considered to be both
morally permissible and legally permissible. Later
many people disputed its morality even though it
remained legally permissible.
Many ethicists divide their discipline into
three branches: meta-ethics, normative ethics, and
applied ethics. Meta-ethics explores conceptual
and foundational questions in morality. Some of
the questions are the following: Are there moral
facts? Is morality objective? How do we come to
know moral truths? Are moral claims the kinds of
things that can be true or false, or are they sim-
ply expressions of emotion? What is the primary
object of moral evaluation?
Normative ethics is the study of which prin-
ciples determine the moral permissibility and
impermissibility of an action, or, more simply,
what constitutes right and wrong. One approach
to this, deontology, holds that morality is consti-
tuted by rights and duties, and that those features
take priority over the consequences of actions. An
alternative approach, consequentialism, maintains
that it is only the consequences of actions (often

Definition: Organizational Behavior notes, “Groupthink is the tendency of highly cohesive groups to value consensus at the price of decision quality” (McShane & Von Glinow, 2008, p. 257).
Summary: The article entitled “The Turn to Online Research is Narrowing the Range of Modern Scholarship, a New Study Suggests” written by Rebecca Tuhus-Dubrow (2008) discusses how the internet has made accessing research and other things on the internet extremely easy. The author asserts that by using search engines, which often rank the importance of a result by popularity, students leave themselves vulnerable to groupthink when conducting research results (Tuhus-Dubrow, 2008). Tuhus-Dubrow (2008) suggests that this this can be mitigated by using multiple sources to help provide a more well-rounded research pool.
Discussion: The internet has made performing research for students a matter of seconds. Students used to have to go to the library and conduct research out of textbooks and other publications but now by simply typing your subject in a search engine a variety of choices are at your fingertips. “Millions of journal articles are available online, enabling scholars to find material they never would have encountered at their university libraries” (Tuhus-Dubrow, 2008, para 2).
The internet just like everything else has it costs as well as benefits. Just like the article states the internet has started to dominate people’s lives. People rely on the internet for everything for both work and personal use.
The internet is considered to be a new form of groupthink because when searching for articles students are not highly selective in the choices they make and they tend to pick one of the few search choices that comes up. Also, the other alternatives of research are now not used due to the convenience of the internet. Tuhus-Dubrow (2008) make the case that outcomes should be portrayed by search engines in some organized way because most websites depend on devices that classify primarily in a couple of ways. The ways they are classified are by chronological order and by popularity (Tuhus-Dubrow, 2008). If a search engine filters results by popularity then this is groupthink because others are succumbing to the will of the group by choosing the same articles that show up first as results.
Do you feel that internet search engines cause groupthink? If so, elaborate on why you think this. Do you feel that this is why many professors at Liberty University want students to not choose the same discussion board topics? I personally feel that the reason professors want us to chose different topics is so that we will not reflect the same views and chose the same articles which would therefore be groupthink.

Negotiation and Confrontation
Negotiation
The skills of negotiation are imperative in the business world. Negotiations are a necessary part of many enterprise relations. People are unsettled through the negotiation process because they think that it is a personal matter; however, negotiation is about eradicating problems as well as arriving at the win solutions for all the parties. The Harvard project developed an inventive method for the negotiations. This so-called principled negotiation that outlines the strategies, as well as techniques, anticipate shifting the method to exchange permanent positions to the more flexible method that are relied on the interest of every party. Cognitive biases, as well as culture valued scopes, influence the choice making that limits the variation of this kind of innovative approach within the administrations. These biases define the unreasonable choices that individuals make, which affect the adaptation of the principled negotiations as well as the evidence-based management within the organizations (Sanders & Hak, 2018).
Confrontation
Confrontation is the procedure of describing another individual behavior so that the person can see the results of the behavior and possibly change. It is normal as well as the natural feature of the organization; moreover, it occurs in every organization. The few studies inspected the goal coping has established that targets use a variety of plans to covenant with the mistreatment of the organization's. Both confrontations, as well as avoidance, will be unproductive strategies for stopping the recurrence of the rudeness. It arises the objectives to be more probable to forgive as well as the psychology of the mistreatment. In a ...

Choose one ethical issue arising from the use of ICT that has been reported in the press in
the last one year, and discuss it in depth. Show why or how the technology creates or contributes to the
problem. Produce an article, discussing both sides of the issue (pros and cons) drawing on both
technical and philosophical literature. In addition, argue for your own view of the matter, giving your
reasons for your point of view and showing why you believe that they are better than opposing views.
You will be assessed on your ability to reason, analyse and present cogent argument for the particular
case. You should outline the main statement you wish to make about your chosen ethical issue along
with your reasons and others’ objections to it. You may use any appropriate technique to set out the
basic structure of your article.
Examples
1. In the recent years there have been considerable discussions on Internet content regulation. In an
examination of this issue, you may like to present a discussion of the pros and cons of censorship in
general, and how these general principles apply to the Internet, and also some of the technical
issues associated with Internet content regulation. Your main focus statements could be, for example:
Internet content ought to be regulated (alternatively, Internet content ought not to be regulated);
information wants to be free and Content regulation is just censorship under another name.
2. Privacy is a perennial issue. Hardly a week passes without some report in the press about something
that is causing concern, whether it be new data manipulation tools, online social media, search
engines, new legislation, or whatever. Your main focus statements could be, for example: privacy on
the internet ought to be protected; both government and relevant industry sector should come
together to ensure personal privacy on the internet. There are of course many other arguments that
could be presented about the issue of privacy.
You are required to submit the following:
A comprehensive and coherent article containing your critical analysis of the ICT related ethical
issue.
Your article should present:
- the main point(s) of the issue.
- the pros and cons for the main point(s) (your reasons and objections as well as those of others)
including a critique of the effectiveness of the arguments presented.
- conclusions logically drawn from the analysis presented.
the ethics technique worksheet you used to form the basis of your analysis.
Online submission via Turnitin is required for this assignment.

2. Select a Theory from each section
From each section, you will select a theory you will research and write about in your Theoretical Reveiw Paper. For the first Theoretical Review Paper you will select theory/theories from (1) The Self and Messages (Chapters 4, 5, 6, 7); choose one theory to research.
With that theory, you should research how the theory applies to some aspect of communication of interest to you.
For example, here are some topics
(sections of the text, theories, communication aspect)
that other students have previously chosen:
The Self and Messages

Question
Outline good practice for researching for university assignments.
Rob’s Essay
There are views about how to write a good essay. Hennessy (1968) believes that all
first-year university essays should only be written from lecture notes as student
know so little of their subject. According to Murdoch (2015) academic essays
should be well researched. This research should be done from books listed in the
module handbookand using the resources in the library. According to Gornall
(2013) assignments are written using information collected from the library and
online sources. Cottrell (2012) argues that students should use library resources
and some academic websites.
Bill’s Essay
The issue of how students should approach researchfor assignments has
attracted a great deal of debate. Many researchers have offered opinions on
this issue. According to Murdoch (2015) and Gornall (2013) students should
research for assignments using resources in the libraryand from online
sources. Though both stress that website-based researchshould be done
carefully. This is further supported in the work of Cottrell (2012). Murdoch
(2015) also adds that book lists in Module Handbooks should also be used.
These contemporary opinions are in contrast to Hennessy writing in 1968
who argued at least in first year students should only refer to lecture notes for
research.

Over the past two decades, the issue of the ethical stance of businesses appears to have become
more explicitly an area of public debate and consumer awareness. Two illustrations of this are the
number of publications that give consumers information about the most ethical companies (for
example the Ethispere and Good Shopping Guide sites), and the fact that many large organisations
now have an ‘our ethics’ tab somewhere on their website. The UK ethical sales market is currently
valued at over £38 billion, and has been expanding year on year over the past decade, with current
growth at about 8.5% (Ethical Consumer Research Association and Triodos Bank 2017). This essay
will briefly define business ethics and then consider whether it does and should have value as an
aspect of both business activity and business theory and training.
Defining what constitutes a business is contentious in itself, but for the purposes of this short essay it
will be defined as any profit-making enterprise, including charities ,who make profits to invest back
into the enterprise (Smith and Jones, 2014; Rogers, 2013 ; Appleton, 2011). Similarly, there are
8. numerous, overlapping definitions of business ethics. Shaw and Barry define it as ‘what constitutes
right and wrong (or good and bad) human conduct in a business context’ (p. 25). This is a broad
definition that needs some refining in two areas. One distinction to make is that ethics is not the
same thing as general morality. Crane and Matten (2016) explain that although morals are a basic
premise of ethics, ethics and ethical theory go a step further because they focus on how morals can
be applied to produce explicit standards and rules for particular contexts, of which business is one.
Ferrell, Fraedrich and Ferrell’s definition of business ethics as the ‘principles and standards that
guide behaviour in the world of business’ (Ferrell et al. 2002, p.6) is pertinent here, as it emphasises
the application of morals to produce codes and guidelines. Codified ethical behaviour usually falls
under what is called ‘corporate social responsibility’ (CSR), which in turn is usually seen as part of
corporate governance, although there is overlap between the two areas of activity.
The second aspect of defining business ethics which needs unpacking is that, as Crane and Matten
point out, ethics is not synonymous with legality. They state that there is some overlap between law
and ethics, but that legislation usually only regulates the lowest level of acceptable behaviour. In
addition, as Trevino and Nelson (2010) state, the law is limited in what it can do to prevent
unacceptable actions, because legislation follows rather than precedes trends in behaviour.
Business ethics, then, according to Crane and Matten, is mainly concerned with areas of conduct
that are not specifically covered by law, and that are therefore open to different interpretations, a fact
that means a particular behaviour may be legal albeit viewed by many as unethical.
