The document provides guidance for students writing a research paper on the effects of the Great Depression. It outlines choosing a topic, gathering research materials through databases and other sources, and developing an outline. One student chose to analyze how the Great Depression still affects America today. Their proposal and outline discusses the stock market crash of 1929, the devastation of the US economy, and lasting impacts such as income inequality. The deadline for submitting the topic proposal and final paper is also provided.

International Issues Paper Instructions– Winter 2018
You are required to turn in a one paragraph summary explaining which recent
international event you INTEND to write your paper on to your TA on the evening
of Feb. 12 (the night of the midterm). Please be sure there are sufficient newspaper
articles available to support your topic choice.
The purpose of this project is to further develop your critical thinking, research skills and to
encourage you to delve into an international issue of your choosing. The project consists of two
components: a collection of at least four current newspaper articles related to a single
international event of your choosing, and 2000 word summary-analysis paper devoted to the
articles you selected for this project. You will also need to include a “works cited” or
bibliography page along with hard copies of each of your news articles when you submit your
essay on Monday, March 5.
All materials for this project are due to your TA in lecture on Mon., March 5, 2018. Late papers
will lose 10 points for each day they are late.
Purpose of the Paper (Examining the Production of Contemporary Historiography) - The goal
of this paper is to allow you to analyze how “historiography” is an ongoing process largely
influenced by the news media. History is a subjectively generated product. History incorporates
the biases and viewpoints of those who produce it. The news media today is a key source in
providing us with “meaning” connected to newsworthy “historical” events. In fact, the news
media is in fact a major part of the process that generates "history.” Although news media
reporters and editors frequently claim that they are presenting “just the facts," the way in which
these “facts” are presented often carry a number of biases that strongly influence public
perception and interpretations of current events.
For this assignment, you are going to pick a specific, single international event and examine how
this event is presented by different news media sources from around the globe. You are being
asked to compare the articles you have selected for this assignment and discuss how the differing
ways in which the event you have chosen actually reflects more than the "plain" facts, but rather
reveals complex layers of social values, assumptions, biases, beliefs and meanings by each of
your articles' authors.
Selecting a Topic
1) First, select a single international news event that has occurred in the past 60 days. Since the
purpose of the paper is to address international issues, the event you select for this assignment
must have occurred OUTSIDE of the United States (although the issue may INCLUDE the US
as one of the agents involved). There are numerous current news issues to choose from, but for
this project I strongly suggest that you choose an event of a political or social nature.

Policy ProposalsPolicy development and implementation are essent.docxstilliegeorgiana
Policy Proposals
Policy development and implementation are essential processes that need to be embraced in social work. They are crucial aspects that can influence change on how things can be done for our clients to achieve either a negative or positive outcomes. Notably as a social worker, if you need to be more effective in practice, then you should advocate for policies that enhance the desired results to your clients during service time (Plummer, Makris, Brocksen, 2014). Significantly, as a social worker, I have realized that I should not emphasize on every social policy; however, I must make consideration of policies that cover all of my clients.
Policy
To provide permanent housing vouchers for families that are homeless and provide short term assistance to the less affected family. This policy is essential because there will be a consistent payment irrespective of the fact that the tenants will guarantee a particular portion, the clients are aware that failure to do so they might lose their voucher. This means that there will be strict guidelines regulating the behaviors of tenants. Thus, failure to adhere to any part of their signed lease results in loss of the voucher (Plummer et al., 2014).
Jose a Latino male aged 42 years and who is heterosexual he is homeless and has a concern of substance abuse. In this case, Jose requires both counseling and housing services. Considerably, I will implement the housing programs to all individuals who are homeless, and thus Jose will be a beneficiary. Further, I would appeal to the state and federal governments to provide substantial assistance to victims suffering from drug and substance abuse and homeless. I will factor the homeless individuals to further their education by providing resources that will facilitate their learning and social services as well. The policy will cost a substantial amount financed by the government and state agencies annually.
The author designates a trade-off is how policy ranks high in one criterion but maybe lower on another standard (Jansson, 2018).In the case of Jose, the trade-off will be developed limiting the annually cost and providing a prepaid voucher system without adhering to state and federal tax penalties laws. Also, in the case of Jose, I would use a trade-off in implementing more homeless shelters and spend less money on the substance abuse issues with Jose but I would have more money invested in the effectiveness of helping a diverse population of homeless people in seeking shelters.

Spring 2020
Instructions for Essay
Due: Beginning of your scheduled lecture on Thursday 2nd April. A hard copy must be submitted to me—no emailed attachments.
Please read all of these instructions carefully as your grade depends on it.
The purpose of the essay is to use the techniques and concepts learned in class to analyse a particular issue. The ideal essay should be about 2500 words. (Please worry more about making it complete than whether or not it is exactly 2500 words!) You must include a reference list at the end AND appropriate in-text documentation (footnotes, endnotes, or parenthetical documentation). Failure to include references constitutes plagiarism and will not be accepted. It must be typed with 12 point font and 1.5 line spacing. Please include page numbers. You are of course permitted to include charts or graphs (which may be drawn by hand). Outside reading and research on the chosen topic are essential. Possible sources of information are the Internet and Pitt libraries. Another valuable resource for economists is the Journal of Economic Literature, which is available in the library. This quarterly publication compiles a list of all economics books and journal articles and organises them by subject. So if you are looking for recent journal articles about monetary economics, you simply have to look at the newest JEL under the topic “monetary economics” and you will find a list of all recent publications. Obviously, if you look at older copies of JEL you will find past publications. Only certain editions list book publications. Perhaps more handy is to use is EconLit, which is an online search engine for economics publications, which should be available to you from a Pitt computer at search.ebscohost.com (click on the EconLit link). You can access many full articles directly from the search engine, depending on whether Pitt has access to that particular publication. You should also note that you can access JSTOR from a Pitt computer (www.jstor.org). JSTOR is a collection of online files of hundreds of different journals from many subjects and is a valuable resource for finding full articles. Due to copyrights articles from the past few years are not yet available on JSTOR, but you can find most common journals at Pitt’s libraries anyway if you require a recent edition.
Essay Topic:
Choose ONE of the following topics for your essay (if you previously wrote an essay for me or for another class, you may not turn in the same or a very similar essay for this class). Note that I give you some suggested questions that you can address in each essay. You should not feel restricted to answering just these questions—just make sure that it flows coherently and is complete. Most of these essays leave you plenty of room to discuss the ideas that you find most interesting. I am mostly looking at your ability to conduct research, write coherently, and analyse issues and policies.

Some common writing mistakes Try to avoid the following .docxwhitneyleman54422
Some common writing mistakes
Try to avoid the following:
1.) Vague statements
Bad: “Bhutan faces a number of economic problems, but they are trying to fix them.”
Better: “According to the CIA World Factbook, the scarcity of modern infrastructure and technology has
limited economic growth in Bhutan. However, its government has invested heavily in hydropower plants in
order to export energy, and this has created new jobs and investment in the country recently.”
2.) Erroneous claims about causality
Bad: “Birth rates in Germany are lower than the world average, which means it has one of the world’s most
developed economies.”
Better: “Like most of the world’s wealthy countries, Germany has birthrates that are lower than the world
average.
3.) Non sequitur
Bad: “Cameroon has a high birthrate, but its climate varies significantly as one moves from one end of the
country to the other.”
Better: talk about separate issues separately, unless you have documented evidence that they are somehow
related
4.) Overgeneralizations
Bad: “Everyone in India is poor.”
Better: “According to the Population Reference Bureau, India’s gross national income per capita is $3840,
which is well below the world average of $11,690.”
5.) Redundancy
Bad: “A rapidly increasing population puts a strain on the Nigerian government’s ability to accommodate all
citizens. The Nigerian government therefore has a hard time providing adequate social services to its rapidly
growing population.”
Better: if you notice that you have two sentences back-to-back that say the same thing, just use one and cut the
other
6.) Over use of direct quoting
Bad: blocs of text are copied and pasted into your paper more than twice
Better: you paraphrase as much as possible, and limit your direct quoting to one or two pieces of text
7.) Irrational optimism:
Bad: “Chile produces some of the world’s best wine. Therefore, Chile is sure to become one of the world’s top
economies by 2015.”
Better: “Wine is one of Chile’s most significant industries, and will likely continue to generate income and
employment opportunities for the foreseeable future.”
8.) Unwarranted pessimism:
Bad: “Because of the violence in Egypt over the last few years, life for Egyptians will always be very difficult.”
Better: “Daily life for many Egyptians has been difficult over the last few years, as life an in country
undergoing a revolution would be. It is unclear at this point whether or not things will change for the better
or for the worse there.”

1. Summary
Overview
Since this class is centered on the practice of working with the ideas of others and synthesizing those ideas into our own writing, it stands to reason that we should spend some time practicing the art of summary. This summary exercise will help you to improve your academic writing in several ways: First, this excercise will help you to find meaning within a given text and provide you with a better way of interpreting what the author is trying to say; secondly, this exercise will give you further practice in summarizing, paraphrasing, using quotations, and condensing ideas—skills that are essential to academic writing.
Remember that the purpose of this summary is not to relate your reaction to the reading; your role in this process is to simply convey the information in the reading in condensed form. Do not include personal opinion, personal judgments of the material, or personal narrative. Be brief, be as accurate as you can, and try to capture the complete sense of the reading in your summary.
Read and Summarize
Go to the resources tab and use the Ebscohost link to search for the following articles:

Financial Problem
1. Define the financial problem
It is imperative to understand the financial problem fully before jumping into a solution. Some financial problems like thinking about what to eat for breakfast, whether to take a train or drive to work and what to wear to work appear to be so simple. Moreover, the solutions to such kind of financial problems appear to have less impact on our life. If a person is facing a financial problem, he or she can apply the kipling method to define the financial problems. According to the kipling method of defining the financial problem, the problem statement of the problem should be clear. The problem state can be clear only if the six components of the kipling method. The six components include: “What is the problem?”, “Why is fixing the problem critical?”, “When did the problem arise?”, “How did the problem happen?” “Where is the problem occurring?”, “Who will the problem affect?”.
2. Develop an alternative solution to the financial problem
One of the common barriers to solving a financial problem is the relying on the previous experiences that appear to be similar to our current financial state. Perhaps, we are the creators of our poor financial habits and sometimes our decisions and activities are true reflections of our history and stereotypes. Therefore, it is imperative to learn the techniques of developing multiple alternative solutions to our financial problems. During the stage of developing the multiple solutions, the main objective is to create many solutions without considering their practicality or effectiveness. Some of the useful techniques that can be used to develop the alternative solution from the multiple possible solutions that were created include analogies, means-ends analysis, brainstorming, and divide and conquer.
3. Selection of the optimum solution to the financial problem
By selecting the optimum solution to the financial problem, it implies that the solutions that appear to be ineffective will be obviously eliminated. Before elimination, it is appropriate to develop the method for evaluation. Many factors are considered during the evaluation process. Such factors include efficacy, practicality, timelessness, expense, manageability, and risk.
4. After selecting the optimum solution to the financial problem, it is appropriate to implement the solution.
Once the best solution to the financial problem has been selected, it is high time to start taking action. For example, if a person decided to live on cash for a given period then it is high time to implement that approach. Apart from implementing the solution, it is prudent to recognize that some obstacles or problems might arise from the solution. Therefore, it will be ...

Case 1: Family Loyalty vs. Meritocracy
A man was appointed president of the newly-acquired Philippine subsidiary of a large American company. He was reviewing the organization with the company's head of human resources. One thing the president noted was that the same names reoccurred frequently in several departments. "It is our tradition," commented the HR head. "Families take care of their own. If one family member gets a good job in a Philippine company, other members of the family apply to join that company and the first member there can help the whole family become successful by helping them get hired and by coaching them to be successful. The company benefits. Our costs of recruiting are lower, we know more about the people we hire, and the commitment to family success results in fewer performance and discipline problems because family members want to please their older relatives."
The president wondered how these practices would be regarded in a large American firm, and whether or not he should take action to change them.
1. Nepotism is not illegal, but is it ethical?
2. If the business is family-owned, does that make a difference?
3. How does national culture affect this discussion?
Case 2: Is the Two-Tier System Ethically Problematic
Employees at a cereal makers plant were “locked-out” from their jobs producing cereal for over 3 months. Company management and the union representing the employees reached a stalemate in negotiations resulting in the lockout. The union claims that the primary issue is the company’s demand of dramatically increasing the number of temporary workers, who would earn $6 less per hour and receive fewer benefits. Critics claim this effectively creates a two-tier system at the plant. Under the current agreement, the company may use temporary workers for up to 30% of the workforce, but the union claims the company is now pushing for 100%. The workers, who have had their health insurance suspended, fear that their jobs will either be replaced entirely by temporary workers, or they will be f ...

Barbara Corcoran Learns Her Heart’s True Desires
In her hilarious and lighthearted book, Shark Tales: How I Turned $1,000 Into a
Billion Dollar Business, Barbara Corcoran demonstrates the importance of knowing what
you really want out of life (Corcoran & Littlefield, 2011). As her title suggests, Barbara
founded her real estate company, The Corcoran Group, with only $1,000 and some big
dreams. Shortly after founding the company, Barbara took out a piece of paper and wrote
down some big goals for herself and the company. In 1978, she had only 14 sales agents
working for her, who earned a total of $250,000 in commissions. She set a goal of
doubling the number of agents and the commissions every year. So she put down 28 sales
people for 1979, 56 for 1980, and so on, all the way up to 1,792 salespeople in 1985 with
total commissions of $32,000,000. Barbara was amazed when she saw the fantastic sums
projected for 1985, and of course many people, when they see such amazing sums, would
dismiss the calculations as fantasy But as Barbara put it, she went to work the next day
hustling hard for her $32 million.
Real estate agents are paid largely by commission, which is about as close as you
can get to a pure form of contingent reward for performance. However, Barbara didn’t
rely solely on the commissions to motivate her workers. She threw theme parties and held
numerous social events to build a committed workforce. Good sales agents could always
move to another firm, but not every firm had Barbara’s positive attitude and fun-filled
atmosphere. In the early years of the firm, when money was tight, Barbara and her
relatives did the cooking for the outings and parties, and she found clever ways to
entertain people with skating parties and other lively activities. As the firm became larger
and more profitable, she even hired professional entertainers for the company’s midweek
picnics, which included elephant shows, daring rides on hot air balloons, horses, or
Harley Davidsons, etc. Barbara stated “I built my company on pure fun, and believe that
fun is the most underutilized motivational tool in business today. All of my best ideas
came when I was playing outside the office with the people I worked with” (Corcoran &
Littlefield, 2011, p. 283). What did she get in return for the fun atmosphere? She had the
“most profitable real estate company per person in the United States” (p. 284). By the
time she sold her agency in 2001, she had 1,000 agents working for her, and she had the
largest real estate agency in New York – clearly her motivational strategies attracted a
large number of productive employees.
Barbara Corcoran had sold her firm for $66 million. She thought that would make
her happy, but instead, it made her sad. Although she pretended to be happy with her new
wealth and freedom, she was “secretly miserable” (Corcoran & Littlefield, 2011, p. 232).
She had lost her purpose ...

IN Deepa Mehta’s words
I wanted desperately to make CRACKING INDIA into a film, a particular film, EARTH, which would be the second in my trilogy of the elements of Fire, Earth and Water.
Tracing Bapsi was no easy task but persevere we did and soon I was talking to Bapsi on the phone, hoping that the film rights to her book were still available. Two months later, thanks to David Hamilton's unwavering belief in the project, we owned the rights, had development funds, and I was sitting at my kitchen table, writing the screenplay of EARTH.
David and Anne Masson and I had worked together on FIRE and we re-assembled the team to begin the detailed planning of the production.
During this phase Bapsi became a friend and was exceedingly generous with information and old photographs. She would talk with me for hours about what it was like growing up in Lahore during those times. Lenny, after all, was based on Bapsi. In fact, Lenny was Bapsi.
The irony of our situation hasn't escaped Bapsi or myself. Bapsi is from Pakistan and now a US citizen. I'm from India and now living in Canada. If neither of us had moved from our respective homelands, the film just wouldn't have been possible. Pakistan and India, since the Partition of 1947, are sworn enemies. Not only have they fought three major wars against each other, but also, as I write this, both countries talk blithely about their nuclear capabilities and continue their militant aggression against each other across the still- disputed Kashmir border.
Fallen Women in the novel and film
Abducted women like Ayah and Hamdia, Lenny’s new nanny are viewed with suspicion from Lenny.

Fallen women – Abducted and raped women
In the aftermath of the 1947 declaration of Indian independence, the roughly drawn new state boundaries triggered what may have been the biggest migration in human history.
Historical consensus supports a figure of 12 million people displaced, although the BBC suggests figures as high as 14.5 million people. An undeclared civil war erupted as communities of Hindus, Muslims, and Sikhs fought one another to establish their own identities in their redefined homelands. And, in the process, the Indian government estimates, 83,000 women were abused and abducted. Others put the number even higher.

Barriers of therapeutic relationshipThe therapeutic relations.docxrock73
Barriers of therapeutic relationship:
The therapeutic relationship between patient and nurse is often filled with barriers that can generate obstacles for the relationship and, in the end, the health system as a whole (Sfoggia et al.,2014). There are many factors that hinder building a therapeutic relationship: language, professional jargon, communication impairment, and cultural diversity (ibid).
Language:
Language can be an obstacle to nurse-patient communication because a patient may not be able to speak the same language and therefore communication is not possible (Levin,2006). The best way to overcome this barrier is providing a translator who can explain a professional facilitator's message easily to the patient(ibid). For instance, if the nurse only speaks English but the patient is only able to speak Arabic, a translation to the patient of what the professional facilitator is saying leads to less chance of misunderstanding (ibid). Translation also allows a patient to feel comfortable through being able to speak in their own language (ibid).
Medical jargon:
Jargon is a technical language that is comprehended by people in a specific industry or area of work (Leblanc et al.,2014). Health professionals often use jargon to communicate with each other(ibid). For example, T.B. disease stands for tubercle bacillus and HIV stands for human immunodeficiency virus (Mccrary & Christensen,1993). Jargon often makes sense to health professionals but a patient who does not understand these acronyms will not understand such communication, leading to a barrier in therapeutic relationship between patient and health professional (Leblanc et al.,2014).
Communication impairment:
Patients with communication impairment such as blindness, deafness and speech impairment often feel isolated, frustrated and self-conscious (O’Halloran et al.,2009). Some patients are born with such disabilities or have developed them as a result of disease (ibid). Therefore, nurses should provide enough time in order to describe any issue to such patients so that they do not feel uncomfortable or censured by health professionals, who must remain impartial (ibid).
Cultural diversity:
Patients often have various differences (Leblanc et al.,2014).Some of these differences are due to a patient's illness, social status, economic class, education and personality(ibid). However, according to Kirkham (1998), the deepest differences might be cultural diversity. Beheri (2009) points out that many nurses believe if they just treat patients with respect, they will avoid most cultural issues. Nevertheless, avoiding misunderstanding can be achieved through some knowledge of cultural customs, which might help and enable nurses to provide better health care to patients (ibid).
Facilitators of therapeutic relationship:
UNCRPD (2006) states that the most fundamental human right in hospital is communication. Patients are required to be provided with an effective communication method by nurs ...

Critical Analysis of the religious nature of Buddhism
The religious community often debates on whether Buddhism is categorized as a religion or as philosophical teaching. The answer to the question varies depending on an individual’s point of view. There are three main types of Buddhism practices across the world with each of them having smaller branches with slights variances in their teachings and beliefs. The different styles of Buddhist mainly encompass Theravada Buddhism, Vajrayana Buddhism, and Mahayana Buddhism. The various forms often have deities that are worshipped while others do not. Some often have scriptures while others do not usually believe in any physical form of the Buddhist teachings. The first article is authored by Rachel, a blogger, presenting the argument that Buddhism is a religion (Rachel, 1). On the other hand, the second article authored by Pamela Winfield recognizes Buddhism as a philosophy. Analyzing and comparing the two pieces having divergent views on the religious nature of Buddhism is crucial for understanding whether it is a religion or philosophy.
Summary of the articles
Rachel in her article considers Buddhism as a religion. The author acknowledges the fact that Mahayana Buddhism which is often found in greater part of Asia that includes Japan, Korea, and China often teaches on attaining enlightenment (Rachel, 1). The Mahayana often accept that every individual wishes to ensure the effective attainment of enlightenment and thus end the cycle of rebirth which others recognize as “Karma.” The article proceeds to state that Buddha is the greatest of the deities but is not worshipped. Instead, Buddha often inspires all those who practice doing as he once did. The author states that Buddhism often requires that the individuals that choose the wrong path attempt to re-accomplish these tasks in their next life alongside other punishments imposed on them by karma. The characteristics of this type of Buddhism thus often play a significant role in showing the religious nature of Buddhism. The author concludes by stating that Buddhism often contains all the different elements of a religion. Moreover, the article associates Buddhism with fallacies that characterize other religions and just as dangerous as other religions as well. A quote proves the claim on the dangerous nature of Buddhism that the author uses to summarize the teachings of Buddhism.
On the other hand, Winfield tends to focus on enlightening the readers on some of the aspects of Buddhism that ensures its a ...

1. Summer 2019
Research Paper: Handout 1
Outline:
1) Choosing a Topic
2) Gathering Data
The research paper that you will write this term will be a
challenge. It will force you to come up with an original issue to
analyze, a daunting task for professional economists! It will
force you to truly understand an area of financial markets in
minute detail. You will have to scrounge the library and
Internet for any information, whether main or tangential, that
pertains to your topic. Chances are, however, that you will
enjoy it. Besides of choosing an issue that interests you, rather
than having me choose one at random, you will put more effort
(of your own choosing) into the project. You will also gain
valuable research and writing experience, skills that will aid in
college classes and in other areas of life. Finally, financial
knowledge never hurts anyone – only financial ignorance does.
Let me start with a few ground rules. Two weeks past the last
day of the program, no later than Friday, July 2nd at 5:00pm,
you will send me this project via email. It will be
approximately fifteen typed pages (about 4,000 words. Don’t
single-space the paper, with ¼ inch margins just so it fits on
fifteen pages!); this number can include graphs and tables,
though it is permissible to go over twenty pages if you have
included copious graph/tables. If you do not turn in the final
draft of your paper by the deadline stated above, you will
receive a zero, and will most definitely fail the program.
1) Choosing a topic
2. a) Choosing a topic can be daunting, just because the
choices in subject matter are overwhelming. Banking and
financial markets encompass so many aspects of our life and
culture, from the mundane and highly local to international in
scope. Keep in mind that I would like you to choose a topic
that interests you, not a topic that you may think interests me.
Some of the best projects that I have read have been on subjects
about which I previously knew nothing. Here is a small sample
of topics (actual student Wall Street semester papers):
● The end of the NYSE? Electronic Trading and the Future of
Financial Markets
● Dishonesty and Discrimination in Financial Markets
● Playing Close to the Hedge: An Overview of Hedge Funds,
Hedge Fund Failures, and Hedge Fund Regulation
● Risk Aversion in Financial Markets
● Capital Controls: The Development of the World’s Dominant
Financial Centers
● Predatory Lending and the Happy Homeowner
● Deconstructing the Asian Financial Crisis and Mexican Peso
Crisis
● LBOs and Private Equity Groups
● Over-regulation or Under-regulation in United States
Financial Markets?
● The Best of Both Worlds: NYSE’s Commitment to Ongoing
Success
● The Origins and Consequences of The Sarbanes-Oxley Act
● Private Equity: Angel or Barbarian?
● Bitcoin, Apple Pay, and Amazon Stores: Oh My! The
Evolution and Future of Money
● A Study of Insider Trading and Its Market Effects
● Detroit and Puerto Rico: What Caused the Debt Defaults?
● Market Globalization: Links between the stock markets of the
U.S., Britain, and Japan
● How do Hedge Funds Affect Financial Markets? Insight and
Analysis
3. ● International Lending and Its Effect on Sub-Saharan Africa
● The effect of financial markets on global economic
development (focus on India’s Grameen Bank)
● Flash Boys or Con Men? The efficiency and inequity of high-
speed trading
● The effect of financial markets on local economic
development (ie: Red Bulls stadium, new Yankees stadium,
etc.)
● A Parasitic or Symbiotic Relationship? The Federal
Reserve System and Wall Street
● How the Great Depression still affects America Today
● Are Big Corporate Wall Street Mergers good for
America?
● Does International Agency Lending Help or Hurt Developing
Countries? The World Bank under a Magnifying Glass
I will say this once: BE ORIGINAL!! (Do NOT limit yourself
to one of these topics!)
b) Bibliography
Once you have chosen a topic, you need to conduct a literature
search. You need to find out what other people have written on
the subject. There will ALWAYS be some papers that relate to
your topic, no matter how indirectly. Trust me on this one.
Come talk to me if you can find no hint of useful materials.
The first step to this process is to go into an electronic database
called EconLit. From an Internet browser such as Mozilla, go
to the Drew Library home page (available from Drew’s main
page – just choose Drew Community at the top of the page). Go
to Research >> Online Resources >> Economics (under ‘Social
Sciences’) >> EconLit. Then, follow the instructions in the
4. database to conduct a search (keywords, etc.) One useful
property of EconLit is that you can email the results of your
search to your account. Even better, most of the journal articles
that you find will be downloadable in .pdf format. It may turn
out, depending on your topic, that you will not have to visit the
library at all! (unless you are focusing on an issue that is more
historical in nature)
Other online resources include online journal and news articles.
To get to these links from the Drew Library home page, go to
Research >> Online Resources >> Economics (under ‘Social
Sciences’ >>
Proquest – though it contains fewer ‘real’ economics articles,
there are many online business articles here, dating back to
the mid-1980s. These would be good to motivate your topic,
especially in the introduction.
Business Source Premier – roughly similar to Proquest, but a) it
includes business journal articles, and b) it goes back to the
1960s
Lexis-Nexis Academic – contains full-text versions of articles
from almost every U.S. newspaper.
One very important note: make sure that a portion of your
bibliography (at least three, and preferably five or more
citations) consists of articles from books and professional
journals, such as the Journal of Monetary Economics or
American Economic Review. I won’t accept a bibliography
consisting solely of articles from Time, Newsweek and Yahoo.
This is economics and business! You need some semblance of
models, not gossip from a chat room!
You must turn in your topic proposal (which should begin with
a sentence stating the facet of banking and/or financial markets
5. you have chosen to analyze, and a one-paragraph, more detailed
explanation below) by the evening of Wednesday, June 12.
c) Outline: Suffice to say, everyone’s paper will be quite
different. Therefore, a generic outline will hardly help many
of you. But I offer one anyway, so that you may get a handle
on how to study your issue.
1. Introduction (state issue and why it is of importance)
2. Background (here you will want to go into the history of the
subject. For example, if you are looking at how the equity
market structures of the U.S. and Canada differ, you would want
to talk about the creation of these institutions in the ei ghteenth
and nineteenth centuries, as well as how the two sets of systems
have withstood financial turmoil)
3. The Issue at Hand – an explanation of the current issue
4. Policy Recommendations (or how you see the issue changing
in the future, ie: the future of the U.S. equities markets)
5. Conclusion (just a wrap-up of what you have talked about in
the past ten pages)
2) Data
You WILL be required to analyze and discuss financial data in
your project! More about this, including data sources, will be
forthcoming.
Deadline (once again):

Proposal
How the Great Depression still affects America Today? I intend
to analyze how the issue The Great Depression of 1929
devastates the United States economy.
Outline
Introduction
The topic of great depression helps us to understand the face of
the United States in the significant turmoil following the
economic collapse in the country. The Great Depression is the
greatest catastrophe in the United States, and it is crucial in
understanding how several factors in a nation can blend into
economic misery.
Background
The Great Depression was caused by the stock market crash of
1929 due to a drop in the Dow James industrial average by
eleven percent (Elder, 2018). As a result, the investors
panicked, and they began selling their shares in large volumes,
making Dow decline. Besides, there was another panic in the
New York Stock Exchange, which made the investors sell their
shares in unpreceded numbers (Adams, 2017). Indeed, the
12. market fell by another twelve percent since more than sixteen
million shares were traded on that particular day. Many people
in the United States choose to buy gold rather than putting their
money in socks since the American economy was shattered and
people lost their confidence in the banks and Wall Street.
The Issue at Hand
The current issue at hand is the impacts of the Great Depression
in the United States today. One of the effects of the Great
Depression in the United States presently is income inequality.
For instance, many Americans in the top one percent of the
income in 2012 have held the same income position since 1928
(Veblen, 2017). Since the Great Depression occurred, the
employment increased significantly with the rapid increase in
the industries, but the salaries of the workers failed to rise. As a
result, the spending decreased, which caused a decline in the
stock price since people could no longer afford most of the
products. Additionally, there was a market crash which affected
the belief in the United States financial system. Indeed, many
banks were greatly affected as Americans began pulling their
money from these banks, which made many backs across the
country to close.
Policy Recommendations
Several policies can be embrace to assist the economy when
stuck in any recessions. Moreover, the government should
improve the overall functioning of the country’s economy if the
markets fail to allocate adequate resources. One of the policy
remedies is the government’s monetary policy. Along with the
monetary policy is the fiscal policy and the stabilization policy.
Indeed, these remedies can help in increasing the overall
aggregate spending in a nation and increase the GDP as well.
Conclusion
People can embrace several policies in the future to avoid such
catastrophe from retaking the place. The Federal Reserve failed
to provide the necessary aid to many banks across the country
during the Great Depression, making them collapse. Thus, the
Federal Reserve should be more aggressive and active in
13. creating cash and financing banks. Increasing the money supply
to banks can aid in reducing income inequality and shortages in
case people choose to withdraw large sums of money.
Additionally, the government can increase its expenditure by
building more infrastructure and employing more people.
Decreasing the tax cuts as well can assist in stimulating the
economy, which indeed increases the deficit.

Proposal:
How will Russia’s market turmoil in 2008, and subsequent
reform, affect global and regional financial markets? Is
democracy in Russia doomed, by the very forces it has tried to
emulate?
I intend to analyze how the sweeping democratization in
the former heart of the Soviet Union has changed the country,
as well as how it has coped with the developmental and
financial problems that have emerged in the past few years.
Government inefficiency and financial speculation have at times
brought Russia to the brink of economic ruin. Can Russia
survive more of these crises? Can stable investment
opportunities be sustained?
Outline:
Introduction
More in-depth statement of proposal. Include
very recent events (say, over the past few days or
weeks). Also, include motivation – why is this
topic of interest to people?
Democracy
14. History of the past twenty years. Include
discussion of the former Soviet Union and its
collapse. Also include various financial crises that
occurred soon after. Structure of financial markets in
Russia.
Market Events and Discussion of Issue
Discuss 1998’s turmoil (near default on government bonds,
subsequent collapse of ruble and their effects on global
financial markets). Also mention the situation in 2008, which
involves utter collapse of Russian stock markets (70% drop in
index in one week alone!)
Suggestions for financial market stability
Responsible government regulation is key to financial survival!
Also, a stable market is necessary to get rid of as much risk as
possible – need confident investors!
Conclusion
