DEFINITION
MODAL or SEOM is verb auxiliary
(kata kerja bantu) that gives the
additional meaning to verb
ordinary (kata kerja utama).
KINDS OF MODAL AND SEOM
MODAL SEOM MEANING
CAN BE ABLE TO BISA/DAPAT
WILL BE GOING TO AKAN
MUST HAVE TO, HAS
TO, HAD TO
HARUS
SHOULD BE SUPPOSED TO SEHARUSNYA
MAY/MIGHT BE ALLOWED TO BOLEH
THE RULES OF MODAL AND SEOM
1.Modal must be followed by bare infitive (kata
kerja utama bentuk pertama, BI/V1)
(modal+V1)
e.g: - we must study English
- we must studied English
2. Modal may not be followed by preposition (kata depan)
(modal +preposition+V1)
Eg. - Barbara will to go abroad next month
-Barbara will go abroad next month
3. IF there are two kinds of modal in sentence, the second modal should be changed to be
SEOM or change both modal to SEOM.
Pola: modal+modal Modal+ SEOM
SEOM + SEOM
e.g. - they should can finish the paper
- they should be able to finish the paper
- - they are supposed to be able to finish the paper
EXERCISE
• In section of structure in TOEFL Test there are 40 questions with two parts. Part
one (1-15) is multiple choice in which we have to choose the correct answer
while part two (16-40) is written Expression where we are suggested to choose
the wrong choice.
