This paper evaluates the use of Dropbox cloud storage for distributing evolutionary algorithms across multiple computers. The researchers implement a distributed version of two evolutionary algorithms, MMDP and Trap, over Dropbox and measure speedups when running the algorithms on 1 to 4 computers connected by gigabit Ethernet or WiFi. The results show that Dropbox provides automatic load balancing and good scaling of the algorithms as more computers are added. However, network connection can impact performance, with gigabit Ethernet generally outperforming WiFi.

Lightning is a Python library for large-scale machine learning that incorporates recent advances in optimization algorithms. It is compatible with scikit-learn and supports both dense and sparse data as well as structured sparsity penalties. Lightning scales to large datasets using stochastic optimization methods like SGD, SVRG, SDCA, and SAGA. It also efficiently handles large feature spaces using coordinate descent algorithms. The API is similar to scikit-learn but is based on optimization algorithms rather than machine learning models. Lightning is part of the scikit-learn-contrib project.

This document studies time-varying partially connected topologies for particle swarm optimization. It compares different population structures, including local best (lbest), global best (gbest), and a dynamic Von Neumann neighborhood structure. Abstract— Cloud storage is usually distributed infrastructure, where data is not stored in a single device but is spread to several storage nodes which are located in different areas. To ensure data availability some amount of redundancy has to be maintained. But introduction of data redundancy leads to additional costs such as extra storage space and communication bandwidth which required for restoring data blocks. In the existing system, the storage infrastructure is considered as homogeneous where all nodes in the system have same online availability which leads to efficiency losses. The proposed system considers that distributed storage system is heterogeneous where each node exhibit different online availability. Monte Carlo Sampling is used to measure the online availability of storage nodes. The parallel version of Particle Swarm Optimization is used to assign redundant data blocks according to their online availability. The optimal data assignment policy reduces the redundancy and their associated cost.

For this reason, image data stream processing has operated in just one node commonly. However, we need to process image data stream in a distributed environment in a big data era due to increase in quantity and quality of multimedia data. In this paper, we shall present a real-time pedestrian detection methodology in a distributed environment which processes image data stream in real-time on Apache Storm framework. It achieves sharp speed up by distributing frames onto several nodes called bolts, each of which processes different regions of image frames. Moreover, it can reduce the overhead caused by synchronization by computation bolts which returns only the processing results to the merging bolts.

Charm a cost efficient multi cloud data hosting scheme with high availability

More and more enterprises and organizations are hosting their data into the cloud, in order to reduce the IT maintenance cost and enhance the data reliability. However, facing the numerous cloud vendors as well as their heterogenous pricing policies, customers may well be perplexed with which cloud(s) are suitable for storing their data and what hosting strategy is cheaper. The general status quo is that customers usually put their data into a single cloud (which is subject to the vendor lock-in risk) and then simply trust to luck. Based on comprehensive analysis of various state-of-the-art cloud vendors, this paper proposes a novel data hosting scheme (named CHARM) which integrates two key functions desired. The first is selecting several suitable clouds and an appropriate redundancy strategy to store data with minimized monetary cost and guaranteed availability. The second is triggering a transition process to re-distribute data according to the variations of data access pattern and pricing of clouds. We evaluate the performance of CHARM using both trace-driven simulations and prototype experiments. The results show that compared with the major existing schemes, CHARM not only saves around 20% of monetary cost but also exhibits sound adaptability to data and price adjustments.
