This is the core of a 3-hour workshop that was given at TechMentor 2015 Redmond in August. This is a 100-200 level introduction to big data and machine data. In it, I dig into the reasons that big data techniques are useful in troubleshooting common IT Operations problems.

Adoption of the R language has grown rapidly in the last few years, and is ranked as the number-one data science language in several surveys. This accelerating R adoption curve has been driven by the Big Data revolution, and the fact that so many data scientists — having learned R at university — are actively unlocking the secrets hidden in these new, vast data troves.
In more than 6 years of writing for the Revolutions blog, I’ve discovered hundreds of applications of R in business, in government, and in the non-profit sector. Sometimes the use of R is obvious, and sometimes it takes a little bit of detective work to learn how R is operating behind the scenes. In this talk, I’ll begin by presenting some recent statistics on the growth of R. Then I’ll recount some of my favourite applications of R, and show how R is behind some amazing innovations in today’s world.

Rainer Sternfeld presented on creating a Google-like platform for earth data using Planet OS. He described the challenges NOAA faces in managing tens of terabytes of weather data per day across scattered systems. Planet OS could index NOAA's metadata and downsample remote datasets via APIs. It would store chunked array data in object stores like S3 and provide on-demand computing via cloud services. This would make NOAA's large-scale data easily discoverable and machine-readable while addressing issues like data volume, transport, and real-time dissemination.

Over the last year I’ve become obsessed with learning how to be a better "cloud computing evangelist to data scientists" - specifically to the R community. I’ve learned that this isn’t often an easy undertaking. Most people (data scientists or not) are skeptical of changing up the tools and workflows they’ve come to rely on when those systems seem to be working. Resistance to change increases even further with barriers to quick adoption, such as having to teach yourself a completely new technology or framework. I’d like to give a talk about how working in the cloud changes data science and how exploring these tools can lead to a world of new possibilities within the intersection of DevOps and Data Analytics.

Learn how Lafayette College identified the Lovecraftian code horrors lurking beneath its feet with tools like Splunk (server log analysis), OSSEC (server-side bad behavior monitor) and SiteImprove (web page auditing tool) and then surgically eliminated the problems. Examples include PHP scripts spewing error notices into logs, undiscovered CAS authentication failures, and thumbnail generation scripts that choke on large files.

Big data analytics with Apache Hadoop
MapReduce allows distributed processing of large datasets across clusters of computers. It works by splitting the input data into independent chunks which are processed by the map function in parallel. The map function produces intermediate key-value pairs which are grouped by the reduce function to form the output data. Fault tolerance is achieved through replication of data across nodes and re-executing failed tasks. This makes MapReduce suitable for efficiently processing very large datasets in a distributed environment.

This was from a 1-hour lunch & learn session given Jan 2014 by myself to an audience consisting mostly of technical field personnel (titles like solution architect, pre-sales engineer, professional services engineer). The hook is that when working with deploying and maintaining complex software with many text configuration files (like Splunk), or when working in very small teams on "casual" software development or just hacking some scripts together, it's very beneficial to have a source code management tool in place. I chose git, and highlighted the sorts of features that this tool provides to those who ARE NOT developers.
