FOR SURVIVAL.FOOD, CLOTHING,
AND SHELTER ARE BASIC NEEDS
SO PEOPLE PURCHASED THEM OUT
OF NECESSITY.

GROUP 1
- THE SELF IS EVERYTHING THAT AN INDIVIDUAL
CONSIDERS TO BE HIS/HERS, NOT ONLY HIS/HER
BODY POSSESIONS BUT ALSO HIS/HER
REPUTATIONAND BELIEFS. THE SELF,THEREFOR IS
COMPOSED OF THE MATERIAL SELF WHICH IS THE
MANIFESTATION OF ONE’S IDENTITY THROUGH HIS
MATERIAL POSSESIONS.
- AN INDIVIDUAL’S SELFHOOD CAN BE BROKEN DOWN
INTO SEVERAL FRAGMENTS, WITH THE MATERIAL
SELF BEING ONE.
- HE HAS A SPECIAL FASCINATION WITH THE
IMPORTANCE OF CLOTHES TO PEOPLE. HE CLAIMED
THAT THE OLD SAYING THAT THE HUMAN PERSON IS
COMPOSED OF THREE PARTS-SOUL,BODY,AND
CLOTHES- IS MORE THAN A JOKE’’
‘’IN ITS WIDEST POSSIBLE SENSE, A
MAN’S SELF IS THE SUM OF ALL THAT
HE CAN CALL HIS.’’
GROUP 1
BODY
 THE ‘’PHYSICAL BODY’’ IS CONSIDERED THE
CONSTITUENT UNIT.
 THE BASIC COMPONENTS OF SELF INCLUDE THE
BODY.ONE OF THE TASK OF ADOLESCENTS IS TO
ACCEPT IS TO ACCEPT AND APPRECIATE THE
PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF THEIR BODY.
CLOTHES/CLOTHING
 ANOTHER COMPONENT OF THE MATERIAL SELF.
ERMANN LOTZE IN MICROCOSMUS (1890)-
ASSSERTED THAT EACH TIME WE GET TO WEAR
GARMENTS OF VARYING KIND IS A CHANCE FOR US
TO ‘’BRING THEM INTO RELATIONSHIP WITH THE
SURFACE OF OUR BODY AND INJECT THEM WITH THE
VERY ‘’ CONSCIOUSNESS OF OUR PERSONAL
EXISTENCE
FAMILY

INFLUENCE THE DEVELOPMENT OF ONE’S SELF AND
IDENTITY.
 PETS CAN ALSO A SYMBOLICALLY DEFINE A
PERSON’S IDENTITY. A PERSONS PET COULD BE AN
EXPRESSION OF ONE’S SOCIAL STATUS,PRIDE,AND
PRESTIGE, AS IN OWNING A DOG OR CAT WITH A
VERY EXPENSIVE BREED.
 ONE OF THE FORMER REASON WHY WE GRIEVE
OVER THE DEATH OF OUR LOVED ONES.
HOUSE
 THE ACCUMULATION OF SUCH COMPRISES THE
EMPIRICAL SELF’S WEALTH,AND IS THUS
PERCIEVED AS ‘’MOST INTIMATELY OURS’’, FOR IT
ISMADE POSSIBLE BY OUR LABOR
GROUP 1
OTHER PROPERTIES
THE PURCHASE OF AN ITEM, IS NOT JUST CONSIDERED AS AN INVESTMENT IN
MONETARY SENSE (BECAUSE YOU CAN ALWAYS SELL IT SOONER OR LATER) BUT
ALSO FROM THE STANDPOINT OF MATERIAL .
THE ROLE OF MATERIAL POSSESIONS ON THE SENSE OF
SELF AND IDENTITY REGARDLESS OF HOW MUCH OR HOW
LITTLE MATERIAL POSSESIONS ARE SYMBOLIC OF ONE’S
SOCIAL STATUS. CARS,HOUSE,GADGETS,AND CLOTHES ARE
TO SOME THE MOSY VALUABLE POSSESIONS BECAUSE THEY
ARE THE MOST VISIBLE TO THE EYE OF OTHERS.
GROUP 1
-MATERIAL POSSESSION ACTS AS AN OBJECT MANIFESTATION OF SELF
-MATERIAL POSSESSIONS CAN BE REFLECTION OF HARDWORK AND
SUCCESS
-OWNING MATERIAL POSSESSIONS BECOME A DRIVING FORCE IN
URGING
INDIVIDUAL TO SEEK HIGH LEVEL OF ACHIEVEMENT TO ACQUIRE
MORE
POSSESSIONS
-MATERIAL POSSESSIONS CAN ALSO CONTRIBUTE
TO AFFELING OF WELL BEING,
HOWEVER THE LACK OR LOSS OF MATERIAL POSSESSIONS CAN BE
DISRUPTIVE TO MENTAL HEALTH MATERIALISM
GROUP 1
-GIVING IMPORTANCE TO MATERIAL POSSESSIONS THAN INTANGIBLE
VALUES
-
A MATERIALISTIC PERSON IS ONE WHO IS EXCESSIVELY CONCERNED WITH
THE ACQUISITION OF MATERIAL POSSESSIONS
COMPULSIVE BUYING DISORDER (CBD)
-
CHARACTERIZED BY AN OBSESSION WITH SHOPPING AND BUYING
BEHAVIORS THAT CAN CAUSE ADVERSE CONSEQUENCES (E.G: DEBTS)
CONSUMERISM
-IS THE CONSUMPTION OF MATERIAL, GOODS AND SERVICES IN EXCESS OF
ON’S
BASIC NEEDS
GROUP 1
This section focuses on how people maintain extensions
of themselves through material possessions and
maintenance of particular lifestyles. In the context of
what the society values as needs and wants, this section
discusses how an individual acquires goods, the factors
that shape his/her economic decisions, and what these
things say about one’s sense of self
GROUP 1
-People are likely to purchase products that can relate to their personality.
Material possessions signify some aspects of one’s sense of self and identity.
-Possessions, tell a lot about their owners. Thus, one’s sense of self and
identity is influential on how an individual chooses to purchase his/her
wants and how he/she makes economic decisions that will address
his/her personal and social needs
-The decisions that go into the purchase of items and certain services is
dependent on a number of factors, including financial constraints,
availability of items and services, and the influence of family and
friends.
GROUP 1
-However, the most important factor is determining whether these items and
services fall under:
*Wants. Synonymous with luxuries. People buy them for reasons that
do not warrant necessity.
*Needs. These are importantsl for survival. Food, clothing, and
shelther are basic needs so people purchase them out of necessity.
GROUP 1
-In the process of acquiring material goods, people generally consider 2
things:
*Utility. Concerned with how things serve a practical purpose.
*Significance. Concerned with the meaning assigned ro the
object. It is also concerned with how objects become powerful
symbols or icons of habit and ritual which can be quite
separate from their primary function.
GROUP 1
-To further understand the term significance, Roland Barthes studied
the concept of semiology or the study of signs. According to him, it is
through objects that people assert their identities. This idea suggests
that objects, aside from contributing to how an individual identities
himself/herself, also signify relationships of people with others based
on what they possess
-The possession of material things also indicates one’s status in the
society. These personal choices build one’s material and economic self
which is an extension of his/her social identity.
