1. The document reports on a survey of the use of open access journals among library and information science students, faculty, and researchers at the University of Calicut in Kerala, India.
2. The survey found that while most respondents were aware of open access journals, only a small percentage had published in them. Respondents said they faced occasional technical problems accessing journals.
3. Suggestions to increase open access journal use included providing training, maintaining a list of relevant journals, and encouraging publication in open access formats. StudySmart is a self-paced online course originally designed for second year medical students at the University of Otago by the Health Sciences liaison librarians.(1) The course replaced in-class information skills labs and was piloted with this cohort in 2012.(3) In 2013, with support (2) from the Schools, StudySmart was rolled out to second year Dentistry, Pharmacy and Physiotherapy students. By the end of 2013 StudySmart was accepted as a Terms requirement within the Medical, Pharmacy and Physiotherapy curricula.
The content comprises learning objects developed in-house (4) as well as appropriate Open Educational Resources (OERs) from external sources. It comprises a series of topics, tasks and quizzes which are built within the extant Learning Management Systems (LMS) - Moodle and Blackboard. Academics are able to select topics that meet their students’ needs from a pool that is edited or added to as required.
We will report on qualitative and quantitative evaluation data which demonstrate the students’ level of knowledge and understanding after completing StudySmart, as well as reporting on what the students believed were the most valuable and least valuable aspects of the course. The majority of students who completed the course reported an increase in knowledge of, and understanding about, the topics covered and were positively disposed to the value of the online course.(5, 6) This paper will also report on some of the challenges that we faced and how the course has developed within the programmes for 2014.
This paper builds on a short talk given at Spotlight on Teaching & Learning at the University of Otago on 27th August 2013.

This presentation reports on findings arising from the collaborative research carried out by OER Research Hub and Community College Consortium for OER (CCCOER).
- Most of the respondents have used some sort of OER, though only around a quarter create OER
- Most report positive effects on their teaching practice as a result of OER use, particularly around peer collaboration and improved subject knowledge
- A smaller proportion (but still in excess of 40%) feel that OER use directly leads to improved reflection on pedagogical practice
- Positive effects were also identified for learners, especially around increased self-reliance, subject interest and experimentation
- There were similar numbers who thought OER wasn’t making much of a difference and a core of what might be termed ‘anti-OER’ responses
- There were mixed views about whether OER was saving institutions money, but approximately 2/3 felt that students had saved money
- Around 1/3 believe that OER is improving student attrition while around 1/2 believe it is not having an effect
- Only around half of OER creators have used open licensing
- There is a core of advocates who understand and actively promote OER; they adopt open educational practices and believe it leads to benefits

The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

17. Conclusion
• Considering the suggestions provided by the respondents and
basing on the awareness of them regarding the number of OA
platforms and OA journals on the subject the study strongly
suggest that training has to be given regarding the accessibility
of OA Journals especially in the field of Library and
Information Science.
• It would be of help if the respondents are made aware of the
opportunities and ways of publishing their intellectual output in
OA Journals.
• More efforts are to be taken (especially in the curriculum) that
promote the use of OA Journals among the faculty as well as
the students.
18. • Comparatively only less number of respondents use the OA Journals
for both Research Work and teaching. But these are the two areas
where the use of the same is required most. So both the faculty and
researchers are to be more convinced of the use of OA Journals in their
academic and research work.
• Though majority of the respondents opined that they are aware of and
use the open access journals answers to the further queries revealed
that the use of the same by them is limited.
