This document discusses a study on the use of mobile devices in public access venues (PAVs) in Latin America. It provides background on PAVs and their role in bridging the digital divide. The study aims to understand how PAV operators conceptualize mobile technologies and development, and whether PAVs are incorporating mobile services. Preliminary results from a survey of 247 PAV operators found that over 75% were stand-alone venues and over half were in Brazil. A word cloud analysis showed operators associate mobile devices with terms like access, connectivity, and communication. The study uses social representation theory and diffusion of innovation theory to analyze the data.

The aim of this study was to identify social patterns in mobile technology mediated collaboration among distributed members of the professional distance education community. Ten participants worked for twelve weeks designing a master’s programme in Information Sciences. The participants’ mobile technology usage activity and interview data were first analyzed to get an overview of the density and distribution of collaboration at individual and community levels. Secondly, the results of the social network analyses were interpreted to explore how different social network patterns of relationships affect online and offline interactions. Thirdly, qualitative descriptions of participant teamwork were analyzed to provide practical examples and explanations. Overall, the analyses revealed nonparticipative behaviour within the online community. The social network analysis revealed structural holes and sparse collaboration among participants in the offline community. It was found that due to their separated practices in the offline community, they did not have a need for mobile collaboration tools in their practices

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to report on the nature of technology and engineering education provision in developing economies, focusing on Nigeria. Design/methodology/approach The paper draws on recent developments in the shake up and implementation of new measures to call for quality technology and engineering education in the country, following changes brought about by new education and administrative structures and the new policies being promulgated by both the now democratically elected government working in tandem with universities throughout the country. Issues relating to methods, curriculum, contents, quality and related are examined and reported. The role of planning, input from engineering industries, improved competition and expanded export of engineering services are all investigated and presented. Findings The paper finds that the establishment of stability in governance of state and universities is signaling positive and upward trend in the implementation of informed policies for improved technology and engineering education in universities which could herald improved economy and conditions of life in the country. Originality/value In the wake of new developments in education in emerging economies such as Nigeria, the need to take stock and review systems for technology and engineering education is highlighted. Using available information, issues affecting present developments and education practice, some suggestions are provided for the future.

Mobile social software: historical roots, state of the art and future prospectsGiuseppe Lugano
Mobile Social Software, also known as MoSoSo, is an emerging paradigm of social computing that appeared around 2004, in parallel with the diffusion of smartphone technology. However, the early applications of MoSoSo were SMS-based. Since then, there has been some research and commercial development of MoSoSo: at an academic level, the peak of MoSoSo popularity was achieved in 2006, when a special workshop on MoSoSo was organized at the annual CHI conference. From a commercial viewpoint, Nokia introduced Nokia Sensor and Google acquired Dogdeball. Unfortunately, both academic and commercial expectations were not met, thus leaving MoSoSo as an unrealized potential. Recently, this trend has been reversed by the success of mobile apps and the popularity of social networking, which led to the rapid growth of the latest generation of MoSoSo including, among others, Foursquare and Gowalla. This lecture on MoSoSo will trace the historical origins and developments of MoSoSo, present the current state of the art and evaluate its possible impacts on future societies.

User participation is increasingly being seen as a way to mitigate the challenges that firms face in innovation,
such as high costs and uncertainty of customer acceptance of their innovations. Thus, firms are establishing
online platforms to support users in innovating services, such as iOS and Android platforms for mobile data
service (MDS) innovation. Mobile phone platforms are characterized by technology (toolkits) and policy
(rules) components that could influence user’s innovation. Additionally, attributes of user innovators (lead
userness) are expected to drive their innovation behavior. Yet it is unclear how these characteristics jointly
impact users’ service innovation outcomes. To address this knowledge gap, we propose a model that builds
on user innovation theory and the work design literature to explain the influences of lead userness, design
autonomy, toolkit support, and their interactions on user’s innovation outcomes (innovation quantity) on these
platforms. We conceptualize toolkit support in terms of two constructs (i.e., ease of effort and exploration), and
design autonomy in terms of three constructs (i.e., decision-making autonomy, scheduling autonomy, and work-
method autonomy). The model was tested using survey and archival data from two dominant mobile phone
platforms (i.e., iOS and Android). As hypothesized, lead userness, exploration through toolkits, and ease of
effort through toolkits positively affect users’ innovation quantity. Additionally, decision-making autonomy
and work-method autonomy influence innovation quantity, but scheduling autonomy does not. Further, the pro-
posed three-way interactions between lead userness, toolkit support, and design autonomy constructs on users’
quantity of MDS innovation are largely supported. The findings enhance our understanding of user innovation
on mobile phone platforms.

Embracing GenAI - A Strategic ImperativePeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
