What is Archetypal Criticism?
 Archetypal Criticism is
a critical theory which
interpret text by
focusing on recurring
myths and archetypes
in the narratives
designs, images,
symbols, themes,
pattern of action and
character types in
literary works.
 ‘The Golden Bough’
by George Frazer is
an anthropological
origin of archetypal
criticism.
What is Archetype?
 Archetypes were first suggested by Carl Jung,
he applied this term to ‘primordial images’ of
repeated patterns of experience in ancient
ancestors which survives in our ‘collective
unconsciousness’.
 A Skeleton (original model) of Literature is
similar but bodies are different. We have same
raw material but we cook it in different way.
 Pattern of thought, image etc..that is universally
present in individual psyche like story of Romeo
and Juliet being a raw material for many
