Definition
An Invasive procedure to drain out the
urine from urinary bladder with the help of
specifically designed articles called Catheter.
This procedure may apply for injecting the
medicine or contrast for therapeutic or
diagnostic purpose

• Intermittent Catheterization: While catheter is
placed in urinary tract for temporary time
period or for one time use and expel out
before 24 hour
• Indwelling Catheterization: While catheter is
placed in urinary tract for more time or more
than 24 hour.

• Patient Identity

• Assemble all the equipment beside the
patient
• Check for allergies
• Hand Wash

• Open sterile tray and keep the patient in
position
• Cover the area with sterile sheet for minimize
the exposure
• Clean the perineal region with antiseptic
solution
• Use separate cotton balls for each wipe
• Clean the area with cotton balls

• Open the sterile packaging of catheter and
apply xylocaine jelly on the tip to 4cm of
catheter.
• Small amount of lubrication jelly should apply
in passage of the urethra
• Ask the patient to take deep breath in and
hold for few second to keep the perineal
muscles loosen

Confirmation
• After inserting the catheter around 6-8 cm in
male and 3-4 cm in female urethra. Urine will
start to expel out after mild resistance felt
• As urine comes out insert the catheter 3-4cm
more in same direction with mild force.
• Connect the drainage tube with the catheter
and hang it with bed below the urinary
bladder to prevent backflow of the urine.
Conclusion of the Procedure
• Inflate the balloon with desired amount of
sterile water or Saline.
• Fix the catheter at upper anterior thigh with
adhesive to prevent accidental expulsion.
• Ask the patient for any discomfort and relieve
it accordingly.
• Patient who experiencing first time
catheterization may complain for urine
urgency
After Care
• Counsel the patient for consequences of the
procedure for cooperation
• Replace all the articles which may used again
sent them to the sluice room
• Dump the disposable equipment used in
procedure
• Record the procedure in patient’s file
