The upper respiratory system includes the nasal cavity, pharynx and larynx. The nasal cavity warms, cleans and humidifies inhaled air. The pharynx is a common passageway for food and air. The larynx produces sound and routes food and air to the proper passageways. The lower respiratory system includes the trachea, bronchi, bronchioles and lungs. The trachea transports air from the larynx to the primary bronchi. The bronchi branch into smaller secondary and tertiary bronchi which lead to bronchioles and alveoli in the lungs where gas exchange occurs.
