1. TYPES OF BREATH SOUNDS
Breath sounds originate in the large airways where air velocity and turbulence
induce vibrations in the airway walls.
These vibrations are then transmitted through the lung tissue and thoracic wall to
the surface where they may be heard readily with the aid of a stethoscope.
Vesicular breath sounds:
Vesicular breath sounds consist of a quiet, wispy inspiratory phase followed by a short, almost
silent expiratory phase.
These are the result of attenuation and filtering of breath sounds by the lung parenchyma .
Vesicular breathing which is typically of normally aerated lung parenchyma , is heard all over the chest
except in : -
1. Over the larynx, trachea and lower cervical vertebra.
2. Over and around the upper part of sternum and third and fourth dorsal vertebra.
Bronchial breath sounds:
It is loud and high pitched .
The duration of inspiration and expiration are equal and there is a pause between expiration and
inspiration as the alveolar phase is absent
It is produced by passage of air through the trachea and large bronchi , heard over diseased , airless or
consolidated lung between bronchi and chest wall.
1..TUBULAR –high pitched -- pneumonic consolidation and collapsed lung with patent bronchus
2.CAVERNOUS-low pitched and heard in a thick walled cavity with a communicating bronchus
3. AMPHORIC - Low pitched with a high tone and a metallic quality seen in bronchopleural fistula
, Large superficial smooth walled cavity.
