Liar analysis of three music magazines.
Magazine 1
Language.
Masthead- this Identifies that this is a NME magazine. The logo is cleverly placed in the top left hand
corner as the human eye flow reads from left to right therefore this will be what they first see when
looking at the magazine.
Cover lines-Summaries of ALT-J and PALMA VIOLETS and explains very briefly what the articles are
about.
Headline-Much larger font than all the other headings. The only heading other than the masthead with
a red font.
House style-All punctuation is italic. All writing is in capitals.
Splash -This is clearly the main story as mike skinner is the largest image on the front cover.
Strapline -Smaller font than the masthead over the main headline.
Banner -The front page headline that goes across the whole page.
Kicker-This story stands out from the rest as it has two pictures whereas the other cover lines
haven't got pictures to accompany them.
Left third-The main feature article the magazine has a large section about mike skinner.
Lure-A small quotation of what has been said inside during an interview as a tease to lure you in.
Exclusive-Exclusive interview, you will only find this interview in this NME magazine.
Institution.
NME magazine is currently published by IPC Media which is the uk's
leading publishing institution for magazines.
Its first release was in march 1952 since then it has been an truly unique
and successful magazine.
Their award winning portfolio of websites reaches over 25 million global
users every month which ensures that the NME music magazine
reaches over 1.1 million music fans every week.
Ideology
NME promotes the listening of indie rock music.
They focus on bringing people emerging artists that haven't quite made
it mainstream yet.
You will very rarely see mainstream artists in the NME magazine.
Mike Skinner who is shown on the front cover is an artist who has
created music in many different genres such as hip-hop, UK garage,
reggae and even country western however he still is not mainstream.
Audience.
NME magazine targets both male and females however it leans more
towards the males with a 70% male audience and a 30% female.
The magazine targets those aged between 16 and 25 who have a strong
love for all kinds of music but mainly indie.
Representation.
This front cover features Mike Skinner who's looking straight at the
camera with a look of shock as if to say that there is something
shocking inside the magazine which would entice consumers to read
the magazine.
Magazine 2
Language.
Masthead- This identifies that this is a kerrang magazine The logo is cleverly placed in the top left hand
corner as the human eye flow reads from left to right therefore this will be what they first see when
looking at the magazine.
Coverlines- Summaries of Slipknot, Green Day, Angels and Airwaves and Panic At The Disco.
Headline- Black Veil Brides this is a much larger font than any over coverlines. It is supposed to stand out
as it is the main headline.
House style- All language is in capitals.
Splash- Andy Six the new god of rock this is clearly the main story in the magazine.
Strapline- This is the smaller heading over the masthead saying “ALL TIME LOW WANT YOU”
Banner- This is the five amazing posters inside it takes up a whole part of the page.
Kicker- The uks biggest gig guide this is a story that stands out from the rest as it is placed in a giant star.
Left third- The main feature in the magazine this is clearly Andy Six who takes up the whole front cover.
Lure- The lure is usually a quotation to lure readers in however this kerrang magazine doesn’t appear to
have one.
Exclusive- This is clearly the uks biggest gig guide as you will only find it in this issue of kerrang.
Institution & Ideology
Kerrang magazine is currently published by Bauer Media Group. It was
first published on 6 June 1981 as a one-off supplement in the Sounds
newspaper. Named after the onomatopoeic word that derives from the
sound made when playing a power chord on a distorted electric guitar,
Kerrang was originally made for the the new trend of British Heavy
Metal and the rise of hard rock acts.
Audience.
Kerrangs editor says Kerrang! will ensure that we are constantly appealing to our spectrum of readers.
From the younger teenage readers who are more open to different genres of rock music – from emo to
thrash etc, to the readers who respect Kerrang! as an authority when it comes to our scene’s heritage
bands. Each issue will include a balance of bands and scenes to guarantee that we’re providing for our
readers’ need for variety and their passionate appetite for their favourite bands as well as their desire to
be introduced to new music within our world. We will focus on the BIGGEST things that are going on in
our world each week, as well as guaranteeing that we are giving our main base of younger readers
everything they need to get into, on top of this the interest in older, harder bands, cementing our role as
an educator.
Representation.
This front cover features Andy Six who is looking straight into the
camera with a very fierce look on his face, this truly represents the
genre of music this magazine favours.
Magazine 3
Language.
Masthead- title piece The magazine’s title. Usually displayed in the top left corner.
Banner- Front page headline which goes across full width of the page.
Cover lines- Summaries of the most enticing features and articles which are inside a magazine.
Headline- The main heading with the biggest font which relates to the main story.
House style- Rules for a particular newspaper or magazine, on spelling, punctuation and abbreviations.
Lure- A small section of a story is printed on the front page and the full story or interview is advertised as
continuing inside.
Kicker- This is a story designed to stand out from the rest of the page which identifies the newspaper or
magazine.
Left third- Contains the main feature article (exclusive interview), as this is the core part of what may be
inside the magazine.
Splash- Main story of the front page accompanied with the headline and a photograph
Strapline Headline in smaller font appearing over main headline.
Institution & Ideology.
The EMAP Media Group used to publish the Q magazine however in January 2008 EMAP sold
all of its consumer magazine titles, including Q, to the Bauer Media Group. Q was first
published by the EMAP media group in October 1986, setting itself apart from much of the
other music press with monthly production and higher standards of photography and
printing.
Audience.
Q is the legendary monthly magazine which celebrates everything that’s great in rock and
roll. Since its launch in 1986 it has a painstakingly built an international reputation for
quality amongst fans, stars and the music industry. With world-beating exclusives,
definitive album reviews, outstanding production values and an inimitable sense of
humour, Q shapes music in the UK and beyond.
Representation.
In this issue of Q magazine the front cover features Cheryl Cole who represents this
magazine perfectly due to the magazine wanting to target an older audience. Cheryl cole is
a sophisticated and sexy woman and in this issue that is shown perfectly as shes looking
coldly at the camera looking very attractive and classy.

  • 1. liar analysis Liar analysis of three music magazines.
  • 3. Language. Masthead- this Identifies that this is a NME magazine. The logo is cleverly placed in the top left hand corner as the human eye flow reads from left to right therefore this will be what they first see when looking at the magazine. Cover lines-Summaries of ALT-J and PALMA VIOLETS and explains very briefly what the articles are about. Headline-Much larger font than all the other headings. The only heading other than the masthead with a red font. House style-All punctuation is italic. All writing is in capitals. Splash -This is clearly the main story as mike skinner is the largest image on the front cover. Strapline -Smaller font than the masthead over the main headline. Banner -The front page headline that goes across the whole page. Kicker-This story stands out from the rest as it has two pictures whereas the other cover lines haven't got pictures to accompany them. Left third-The main feature article the magazine has a large section about mike skinner. Lure-A small quotation of what has been said inside during an interview as a tease to lure you in. Exclusive-Exclusive interview, you will only find this interview in this NME magazine.
  • 4. Institution. NME magazine is currently published by IPC Media which is the uk's leading publishing institution for magazines. Its first release was in march 1952 since then it has been an truly unique and successful magazine. Their award winning portfolio of websites reaches over 25 million global users every month which ensures that the NME music magazine reaches over 1.1 million music fans every week.
  • 5. Ideology NME promotes the listening of indie rock music. They focus on bringing people emerging artists that haven't quite made it mainstream yet. You will very rarely see mainstream artists in the NME magazine. Mike Skinner who is shown on the front cover is an artist who has created music in many different genres such as hip-hop, UK garage, reggae and even country western however he still is not mainstream.
  • 6. Audience. NME magazine targets both male and females however it leans more towards the males with a 70% male audience and a 30% female. The magazine targets those aged between 16 and 25 who have a strong love for all kinds of music but mainly indie.
  • 7. Representation. This front cover features Mike Skinner who's looking straight at the camera with a look of shock as if to say that there is something shocking inside the magazine which would entice consumers to read the magazine.

Coverlines- Summaries of Slipknot, Green Day, Angels and Airwaves and Panic At The Disco. Headline- Black Veil Brides this is a much larger font than any over coverlines. It is supposed to stand out as it is the main headline. House style- All language is in capitals. Splash- Andy Six the new god of rock this is clearly the main story in the magazine. Strapline- This is the smaller heading over the masthead saying “ALL TIME LOW WANT YOU” Banner- This is the five amazing posters inside it takes up a whole part of the page. Kicker- The uks biggest gig guide this is a story that stands out from the rest as it is placed in a giant star. Left third- The main feature in the magazine this is clearly Andy Six who takes up the whole front cover. Lure- The lure is usually a quotation to lure readers in however this kerrang magazine doesn’t appear to have one. Exclusive- This is clearly the uks biggest gig guide as you will only find it in this issue of kerrang.
  • 10. Institution & Ideology Kerrang magazine is currently published by Bauer Media Group. It was first published on 6 June 1981 as a one-off supplement in the Sounds newspaper. Named after the onomatopoeic word that derives from the sound made when playing a power chord on a distorted electric guitar, Kerrang was originally made for the the new trend of British Heavy Metal and the rise of hard rock acts.
  • 11. Audience. Kerrangs editor says Kerrang! will ensure that we are constantly appealing to our spectrum of readers. From the younger teenage readers who are more open to different genres of rock music – from emo to thrash etc, to the readers who respect Kerrang! as an authority when it comes to our scene’s heritage bands. Each issue will include a balance of bands and scenes to guarantee that we’re providing for our readers’ need for variety and their passionate appetite for their favourite bands as well as their desire to be introduced to new music within our world. We will focus on the BIGGEST things that are going on in our world each week, as well as guaranteeing that we are giving our main base of younger readers everything they need to get into, on top of this the interest in older, harder bands, cementing our role as an educator.
  • 12. Representation. This front cover features Andy Six who is looking straight into the camera with a very fierce look on his face, this truly represents the genre of music this magazine favours.
  • 14. Language. Masthead- title piece The magazine’s title. Usually displayed in the top left corner. Banner- Front page headline which goes across full width of the page. Cover lines- Summaries of the most enticing features and articles which are inside a magazine. Headline- The main heading with the biggest font which relates to the main story. House style- Rules for a particular newspaper or magazine, on spelling, punctuation and abbreviations. Lure- A small section of a story is printed on the front page and the full story or interview is advertised as continuing inside. Kicker- This is a story designed to stand out from the rest of the page which identifies the newspaper or magazine. Left third- Contains the main feature article (exclusive interview), as this is the core part of what may be inside the magazine. Splash- Main story of the front page accompanied with the headline and a photograph Strapline Headline in smaller font appearing over main headline.
  • 15. Institution & Ideology. The EMAP Media Group used to publish the Q magazine however in January 2008 EMAP sold all of its consumer magazine titles, including Q, to the Bauer Media Group. Q was first published by the EMAP media group in October 1986, setting itself apart from much of the other music press with monthly production and higher standards of photography and printing.
  • 16. Audience. Q is the legendary monthly magazine which celebrates everything that’s great in rock and roll. Since its launch in 1986 it has a painstakingly built an international reputation for quality amongst fans, stars and the music industry. With world-beating exclusives, definitive album reviews, outstanding production values and an inimitable sense of humour, Q shapes music in the UK and beyond.
  • 17. Representation. In this issue of Q magazine the front cover features Cheryl Cole who represents this magazine perfectly due to the magazine wanting to target an older audience. Cheryl cole is a sophisticated and sexy woman and in this issue that is shown perfectly as shes looking coldly at the camera looking very attractive and classy.
