The University of Central Oklahoma (UCO), founded in 1890, is located on
a 210-acre campus in Edmond, a northern suburb of Oklahoma City. Fall
2010 enrollment exceeded 17,000. UCO is accredited by the Higher Learning
Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools as a
bachelor’s and master’s degree granting institution. The University consists of
five undergraduate colleges and a college of graduate studies, with day, evening
and weekend course offerings. UCO awards ten bachelor’s degrees, offering 114
majors in 63 programs of study. Six master’s degrees are offered in some 54
majors in 31 programs of study. UCO also offers study in six non-degree pre-
professional areas and two certificate programs.

Admission Procedures
• Admission packets to the upper division nursing program
can be obtained from the Department of Nursing
located in the Coyner Health building on campus or
through the web site at www.uco.edu/cms/nursing.
• Students are admitted twice a year to the nursing pro-
gram. Please see our website for application deadlines.
• Final selection of students is based on the following criteria:
• A minimum GPA of 2.5 in all courses completed
• A minimum science grade of no less than C with
2 of 5 science courses completed at time of application.
• A minimum grade of C in pre-professional nursing
courses.
• Three references from faculty with 2 of the 3 from Sci-
ence or Nursing faculty.
• Achievement testing required by the Department of
Nursing
• Number of semesters completed at UCO
• International students must have a written TOEFL score
of 530 or computerized TOEFL of 197 or greater.
• All applicants must have a UCO identification number
to apply.
Transfer Students
Students transferring from other colleges and universities
are accepted on a competitive basis. A conference with the
chairperson of the Department of Nursing is recommended.
Career Ladder Students
Career Ladder students (RN’s and LPN’s) may challenge
portions of the curriculum. A conference with Department
Chairperson or Career Ladder faculty advisor is required.

2. About UCO and the
Nursing Program
Recognizing that nursing is both an art and a science and
understanding that nursing education should take place
in the university setting, in 1969 the diploma program at
Baptist Memorial Hospital joined with the university to
establish the Bachelor of Science with a nursing major. The
first graduates of this new program received their degrees
and were eligible for licensure in 1972. Since that time
well over 1800 men and women have graduated from the
nursing program at the University of Central Oklahoma
and have begun practice as professional nurses.
Advantages of Attending UCO
• Faculty members have expertise in many areas from
Pediatrics to Geriatrics, the Hospital setting to the
Community Setting, and Staff Nurse to Administrator.
Faculty members are also active participants in research
• Small class sizes promote close personal contact between
faculty and student
• Students have the opportunity to practice in major
medical centers, suburban health departments and home
health agencies
• Graduates are prepared to care for clients in many
settings and can provide care for both individuals and
groups
• Focus of learning is on health promotion and prevention
of illness as well as care of the sick
Transition From Student
to Graduate
• Foundation for nursing practice is established during
Freshman and Sophomore years
• Nursing theory and clinical application is taught during
the Junior and Senior years
• Concepts of evidenced based practice are taught
throughout the program, knowledge is put into practice
during the senior year with the development of a
research proposal
• 12-14 hours of nursing major each semester
Transition from Graduate to RN
• Degree earned: Bachelor of Science degree with a
Nursing Major
• Eligible for National Council Licensure Examination
(NCLEX) for licensure as registered nurse. Graduates
of UCO consistently have one of the top pass rates for
BSN programs in the state of Oklahoma
