Course Objectives
• Learn the characterization of sensors.
• Known the working of Electromechanical, Thermal, Magnetic and
radiation sensors
• Understand the concepts of Electro analytic and smart sensors
• Able to use sensors in different applications
Course Outcomes
Upon completing this course, the student will be able to
• Learn about sensor Principle, Classification and Characterization
• Explore the working of Electromechanical, Thermal, Magnetic,
radiation and Electro analytic sensors
• Understand the basic concepts of Smart Sensors
• Design a system with sensors
UNIT-1
Sensors / Transducers:
• Principles, Classification, Parameters, Characteristics, Environmental
Parameters (EP), Characterization
Electromechanical Sensors:
• Introduction, Resistive Potentiometer, Strain Gauge, Resistance Strain
Gauge, Semiconductor Strain Gauges –
• Inductive Sensors: Sensitivity and Linearity of the Sensor –Types
• Capacitive Sensors: Electrostatic Transducer, Force/Stress Sensors Using
Quartz Resonators, Ultrasonic Sensors
SENSORS and TRANSDUCERS
SENSORS is a device that measures the physical quantity into an
easily readable signal. It gives accurate reading after calibration.
A sensor is a device used to measure the physical changes in the surroundings,
like temperature, light, etc., and convert them into a readable signal.

EX: Heat, Light,

OUTPUT SIGNAL
EX: Voltage & Current
SENSORS and TRANSDUCERS
TRANSDUCER (to convert) is a device that converts/transfer energy
from one system to another in the same or different form. The
process of converting one form of energy to another in know as
transduction.
A transducer is a device that converts a non-electrical signal into an
electrical signal. Transducers are referred to as energy converters.

1. Which converts one physical
quantity into electrical
quantity
2. It senses the physical
quanity.it does not convert to
any form
3. Sensor can respond to a
change in physical parameter
and produce a change in a
physical parameter that can
be sensed
