Assignment title PR1 – Research Techniques in Film
The purpose of this assignment is to demonstrate that the learner:
• Is able to identify a range of research techniques that producers use to define
audiences
• Is able to understand the methods producers use to reach target audiences
Scenario
Movie Mania, a new online film magazine aimed at a target market of 16 to 25 year olds plans to
go into production in spring 2017. The magazine will be published both online and in print. You have
been commissioned to research and create an online guide about how film makers define audiences
for their products and how production companies create products for specific audiences. The
magazine wishes to cover a range of production factors and genres which appeal to young people,
so your article should be pitched accordingly.

For this unit and assignment you will find out about the range of types of research that media
producers carry out, including carrying out your own research on a current film. The first part of the
assignment will involve you finding out about the research techniques available to media producers,
followed by in depth analysis of the marketing around a new film and how producers meet the needs
of their intended target audience. You will also carry out an exit poll of a new movie, and report
your findings.
You will be using Survey Monkey to carry out your exit poll and a range of interactive resources on
our VLE.
Task 1 – Research Techniques used by producers
Create a short written report detailing the research techniques available to producers and an
explanation of each one. Along with your report, you will include a link to your exit poll on Survey
Monkey, along with the inclusion of the findings in your report.
Remember that you should generate a thorough report into media research which comprehensively
explains how producers define audiences, using subject specific terminology and elucidated
examples. You may present your report as either a written document in Word, a podcast or Prezi.
This provides evidence for Unit 6 – P1, M1, D1
Task 2 – How producers target audiences
You will add to your report an analysis of at least one poster and one trailer, as well as a summary of
the marketing campaign of a new film and the various methods used, with comments upon the
success of each method, based upon your exit poll research.
Remember that you should generate a thorough report into marketing techniques and analyse a
range of marketing materials, using subject specific terminology, which comprehensively explains
how producers create products for audiences, using elucidated examples. You may present your
report as either a written document in Word, a podcast or Prezi.

Assignment brief Qualification Extended 180 Credit Diploma in Creative Media Production Unit number and title Unit 6 – Digital Graphics for Computer Games Assessor name Paul Rossington Date issued 26/09/2016 Hand in deadline 17/10/2016 Assignment title PR1 – Research Techniques in Film The purpose of this assignment is to demonstrate that the learner: • Is able to identify a range of research techniques that producers use to define audiences • Is able to understand the methods producers use to reach target audiences Scenario Movie Mania, a new online film magazine aimed at a target market of 16 to 25 year olds plans to go into production in spring 2017. The magazine will be published both online and in print. You have been commissioned to research and create an online guide about how film makers define audiences for their products and how production companies create products for specific audiences. The magazine wishes to cover a range of production factors and genres which appeal to young people, so your article should be pitched accordingly. Key topics • Understand how media producers define audiences for their products • Understand how media producers create products for specific audiences For this unit and assignment you will find out about the range of types of research that media producers carry out, including carrying out your own research on a current film. The first part of the assignment will involve you finding out about the research techniques available to media producers, followed by in depth analysis of the marketing around a new film and how producers meet the needs of their intended target audience. You will also carry out an exit poll of a new movie, and report your findings. You will be using Survey Monkey to carry out your exit poll and a range of interactive resources on our VLE. Task 1 – Research Techniques used by producers Create a short written report detailing the research techniques available to producers and an explanation of each one. Along with your report, you will include a link to your exit poll on Survey Monkey, along with the inclusion of the findings in your report. Remember that you should generate a thorough report into media research which comprehensively explains how producers define audiences, using subject specific terminology and elucidated examples. Task 2 – How producers target audiences You will add to your report an analysis of at least one poster and one trailer, as well as a summary of the marketing campaign of a new film and the various methods used, with comments upon the success of each method, based upon your exit poll research. Remember that you should generate a thorough report into marketing techniques and analyse a range of marketing materials, using subject specific terminology, which comprehensively explains how producers create products for audiences, using elucidated examples.
