Different Types of Production Briefs.
Contractual Brief -A contract brief is between the client and employees. The contractual brief
explains the duties required and how the company's schemes its work. The contractual brief explains
how the much employee will receive. The contractual brief includes areas such as what the employee
is agreeing before signing it. A contractual brief must also include the general liability insurance. It is
a legal contract between advertising companies and its client which describes the duties required as
well as the price and payments terms.

(A contractual brief is an established brief that does not leave much room for negotiation. It consists
of set guide lines which you are legally obliged to follow.) If I were to do this type of brief for a client
I could, hypothetically, produce a new company logo. This type of brief would help improve my
communication skills as I would be required to listen carefully to ensure I understood and agreed to
everything that was asked of me. Contractual briefs are usually very formal so I would have to pay
attention to my time management to arrive on time and also meet the deadline set. To design a
company logo I would need to use programmes such as Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator, this would
improve my technical skills. If I managed to do all these things to a high standard and produce a
good outcome, the company may refer me to other neighbouring companies which will help to
progress my career.
Negotiated Brief - This is when two parties have different ideas from each other but they both have
to come to a decision by compromising and making sure that both the parties are happy by the
decision.

plan and produce a music video. Due to the relaxed nature of negotiated briefs my communication

between the company and the client. Although negotiated briefs are very relaxed I would still be
required to attend meetings on time and also meet the set deadline, this would help improve my
time management. My technical ability would also be tested as I would need to use computer

production company to produce a program for their schedule.

produce a 1 hour radio show for a broadcast producer.If I was to be involved in a commission brief
about producing a 1 hour radio show my communication skills would be vital in helping me to
understand what is being asked of me and listening to every detail to correctly create what the
company is requesting from my show. Being a smaller commissioned company it is important to
meet all deadlines and meeting times as the larger company employing you could easily find a
replacement. My technical skills would also be improved as I would need to operate the portable
radio production suite to broadcast the show and also use software such as Reaper to create radio
jingles and advertisements. By broadcasting a 1 hour radio show for a larger production company
many listeners will heard your show and if they like it, you will gain more publicity and move up in
the radio industry improving your career.

Tender Brief -A tender brief is where several prospective contractors provide an estimated cost and a
description of how the product may be produced. The proposals are discussed by the commissioner
and one of the tenders drawn.

(A Tender brief consists of healthy competition between production companies, where they all
produce their own brief and the favoured one is selected.) In a tender brief I could be asked to
create a TV series ‘Pilot’. In this style of brief it is very important that you are well spoken and
communicate clearly as you are trying to get the company to choose your idea. I would be punctual;
if not early to impress the company with my time management also I would be sure to meet any
deadlines. To plan the TV pilot I would need to be familiar with software such as Microsoft and
Adobe Illustrator. After producing the TV pilot, if it was successful the company could ask me to
create more shows for their programme, enhancing my career.
Formal Brief - A formal written document containing specific and precise details about the goals that
needs to be achieved. The brief gets straight to the point and doesn't contain any unnecessary detail
or information. This type of brief is mainly aimed at a group of people or a business company rather
than individuals. A formal brief is not always a legal

(Formal briefs are direct and straight to the point with not much room for change. It gives clear, vital
information that is easy to understand.) In a formal brief I could be asked to create a NHS ‘Stop
Smoking’ poster or leaflet. The NHS is a large company and very well organised. Working for them
would mean I would need to manage my time accordingly to meet any set deadlines or meetings,
helping improve my time management. Also I would need to clearly communicate with them to
ensure no fine details are missed and everything they asked for is included in the product. Using
Photoshop to create the poster would also improve my technical skills. Because the NHS is such a
huge company your work would be recognised all over the UK and other opportunities could arise in
your career.
Informal Brief - This type of brief is done face to face through a meeting, all aspects of the brief must
appeal to all members from the client list, the advantages of doing an informal brief is that it can
create a relaxed environment and therefore be created a lot quicker, the disadvantages of an
informal brief is that it can be seen as unprofessional and

informal brief I could be required to produce a TV ‘Sting’ for E4. Informal briefs are very relaxed and
rely on very good communication skills from both the client and the producer to come to a valid
conclusion. Also I would have to manage my time and be required to attend meetings on time as
well as meet any required deadlines. My technical skills would also be tested while creating a TV
Sting using Adobe After Effects which is a complex piece of software. If the sting ended up getting
played on television, other companies will see it and if they enjoyed the work they could request you
to work for them which is a great way to improve your career plan.

Different Types of Production Briefs.
Competition Brief- This type of brief is given to you when participating in competitions, it allows the
clients to understand what they must do to enter and complete the competition. This brief is different
to other briefs as it is more intense with the audience. This brief is usually used for companies that
are promoting competitions; the brief is given out to clients so they can understand what they are to
do. When creating the brief the client must consider the scope of work, medium required, size of
purchase (how many competition details are needed), target group and how to attract them, time
framed, quantities and siting.

the competition but at the same time leaves room for creative interpretation.) In a competition brief
I could be asked to design an Advertisement for a TV show.Competition briefs require you to make a
good first impression on the company. Similarly to a tender brief it is very important to manage your
time well by meeting deadlines and being punctual because there are other people competing with
you. In order to produce a TV advertisement I would need to use advanced software such as Adobe
Premier and After Effects which would test my technical ability. If the company chose you and
enjoyed your work they could then contract you in the future to come in and work for them again.
CO -Operative Brief–A Co-Operative brief is where you are working with someone else. Therefore if
you are working with somebody else and not just yourself then you are co-operating. When you are
working a long side somebody else then this is when you will both discuss your own thoughts and
opinions and then delivering them to each other in order to put them in to the brief.

(Co-Operative Briefs consist of more than 1 person/company working together, sharing ideas and
discussing possible outcomes and then delivering them as a combination.)For a Co-operative brief I
could be required to create an advertisement for a Billboard. Co-Operative briefs involve working
with another person(s). This would require me to be polite but also confident in expressing my
opinions of my partners’ suggestions. Communication must be very clear between one and other
and agreements will have to be made. Time management is very important in this type of brief as
you must plan meetings for when you are both available and make sure you both meet the deadline
because if one person doesn’t pull their own weight the other will, in turn, not be successful. If you
worked well with your partner they could then involve you in further projects.
