Unit 1 research methods worksheet for year 10 hbgd
1. Unit 1: P1, M1, D1
Why would you complete research if you were creating a new media product?
• To find out if your target audience would buy your product
• To find out how much you could sell your product for
• To find out how to make your product more appealing to your target audience
• To find out how to market your product to your target audience
Find definitions of the 4 research methods and give your opinions as to advantages/disadvantages for each one.
Method Definition Advantage Disadvantage
Primary
Find it out yourself though
your own knowledge or
through other peoples
knowledge
You can do it as quick as you
can rather than waiting on
other people to do it
No one else’s opinion
meaning other people might
not like it
Secondary
Find it in books and reading
things on the internet through
other peoples reports online
You can do it without anyway
panic or worry because
everything is at your fingertips
Internet can be wrong like
hoax information
Quantitative
Survey from different sizes of
people on the street and it
being random and to specific
things and collate the
numbers and the data into the
answers needed
A lot of people saying if they
liked one product in
comparison to another and
what they liked about the
product you ask them about
It is only numbers there is
nothing saying what
specifically is wrong
Qualitative
Target specific kinds of
people to ask them about
what they think and use their
own opinions to find out what
they think to improve
More people saying their own
opinions and defiantly giving
something wrong with the
project
Words can be harder to put
into a chart or graph and can
be harder to present to people
because there words not
numbers or statistics.
2. Unit 1: P1, M1, D1
What research methods (e.g. primary, secondary, qualitative, quantitative) did you use when completing the
assignments in year 10 for Unit 5 (Crime Drama and Music Videos) and Unit 7 (Festival Bags) ?
I did a lot of qualitative and secondary research during my design and used all the feedback in my advantage by using the
colours they suggested and the festival they suggested, then by adding my own ideas I think I made a very good bag. And
likewise with my music video by suggested; songs, artists and ideas.
How did you collate, store and use the information when researching for your year 10 units? (e.g. did you book
mark key websites? Keep a list of websites used? Print off or save any info for your folders?)
I did not mark any key websites because I found that I would only ever visit them once because I only every needed one
piece of information from them so I saved the information I needed but not the website.
What research techniques (e.g. using the library, the internet, watching videos, reading info, recces, practises,
plans etc) did you use when completing the assignments in year 10 for Unit 5 (Crime Drama and Music Videos)
and Unit 7 (Festival Bags) ?
I did a lot of research on the internet and using the library to do collect different amounts of data and different ways to
collects and cycle through everything I had to do. Such as the photos I had to take of the school (for recces) and filming.
My festival bags I had to do so much research into the bands, the festival I chose and where the bands were playing etc.0
If you didn’t use some of the methods in year 10, would use you them if you were to do your projects again? How
and why would you do this?
Yes I would use different research methods if I were to do it again because I think with the research I had picked up from
doing it this time round I would have a good amount of knowledge to go on and do the primary and quantitative research.
