FOUNDATION
• Headquarters- Chicago, Illinois (USA) plus 3
country offices (India, Mexico and Nigeria)
• Full name- John D. and Catherine T.
MacArthur Foundation
• Ideology: The foundation supports creative
people, effective institutions, and influential
networks building a more just, verdant, and
peaceful world.
• On October 18, 1970 – after John’s
longtime friend and attorney William T. Kirby
(Also the first president of the organization)
convinced him that a foundation would allow
his money to go to good use long after he
was gone – the documents for the John D.
and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation were
completed.

12. WORKS IN INDIA
• 2003: The foundation opens an office in India and launches an HIV prevention program. Within a
decade, India's HIV infection rate falls by half.
• “With the goal of improving the lives of millions of Indian people, we work in collaboration with the
Indian government and other partners on various issues, from health care and sanitation to gender
equality, agricultural development, and financial empowerment of the most vulnerable populations”.
• Motivation to work in India: In higher-income countries, rotavirus is easily treated, and a vaccine is
available. Stirred by this gross inequity in access to health care, Bill and Melinda resolved to devote
themselves to addressing such issues, leading them to establish their foundation.

13. EFFORTS IN INDIA FOCUS ON KEY ISSUES THAT WILL
AFFECT THE FUTURE OF INDIA’S MOST VULNERABLE
COMMUNITIES
• Reproductive, maternal, newborn, and child
health and nutrition; sanitation; agricultural
development; gender equality, and digital
financial inclusion.
• The foundation has a Memorandum of
Cooperation (MoC) with India's Ministry of
Health and Family Welfare under which they
provide technical, management, and program
design support for key health initiatives.
• Under the MoC, the foundation supports the
ministry's work to improve health outcomes,
such as by:
• reducing maternal and child mortality,
• improving nutrition services, and
• increasing immunization coverage.
