 WHAT IS NGO?
A non-governmental organization
(NGO) is any non-profit, voluntary
citizens' group which is organized
on a local, national or international
level.
 NGOs are also traditionally known as:
Voluntary Organizations (VOs),
VoluntaryAgencies (VAs),
Voluntary Development Organizations (VDOs),
Non Governmental Development Organizations(NGDOs).
 Characteristics of NGO

 What is CBO ?
An NGO is a nongovernmental
organization and a CBO is a community
based organization. Basically, a CBO is a
subset of NGO types.
An NGO can focus impact on anything
from a small group to ending world hunger.
A CBO is an NGO, but it’s focus is strictly
on community based activities. It works on
a local level only.

BRAC is the largest non-governmental development organization in the
world.
BRAC start their journey in 1972 and has introduced itself as “a pioneer in
recognizing and tackling the many different realities of poverty.”
Their vision is of just, enlightened, healthy and democratic
societies free from hunger, poverty, environmental degradation
and all forms of exploitation based on age, sex, religion and
ethnicity.

Caritas Bangladesh works in integrated
development, disaster management, and human
resource development. They start their journey in
1967 as Caritas East Pakistan. In 1976 they were
re-introduced their name as Caritas.

• Established in 1976
• Proshika was founded by social
workers trained in BRAC who
decided to concentrate mainly
on human development
training
 The rural development activities of PROSHIKAcan be
grouped into three broad categories :
1. Building self-awareness and
confidence
2. Promotion of income
3. Development of education
 ASA
• Established in 1978.

 JAAGO Foundation
• The JAAGO Foundation is a civil society
organization established in April 2007 and
based in Bangladesh.
• The foundation has more than 25,000
volunteers via its volunteer platform 'Volunteer
for Bangladesh' who celebrate this day by
raising awareness for children's rights.
 JAAGO Foundation School
• It has 12 fully functional branches and over
3,000 students. The JAAGO School is the
first of its kind to provide free of cost
education of international standards to the
destitute children of Bangladesh.
• The primary course of instruction is English
although students are also taught Bangla to
have a very strong background in Bengali.
