2. Who are they and what they do
•Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is one of
the largest private foundations in the world,
founded by Bill and Melinda Gates. It was
launched in 2000 and is said to be the
largest transparently operated private
foundation in the world. It is "driven by the
interests and passions of the Gates family".
3. Their aim and mission
Their aim was to team up with partners around
the world to take on some tough challenges:
extreme poverty and poor health in developing
countries, and the failures of America’s
education system.
Their mission was to focus on only a few
issues because they think that’s the best way
to have great impact, and they focus on
these issues in particular because they think
they are the biggest barriers that prevent
people from making the most of their lives.
4. Their history milestones
William H. Gates Foundation merges with Gates
Learning Foundation to form Bill and Melinda Gates
Foundation in 2000.
The foundation received over $30 million from Warren
Buffet.
Opening of Beijing office in 2007.
Launched HIV/AIDS prevention branch in India.

foundation in 2008.

Opening of world headquarters in Seattle in 2011.
5. How They Work
To bring about the kinds of changes that will help people live
healthier and more productive lives, they seek to understand the
world’s inequities. Whether the challenge is low-yield crops in
Africa or low graduation rates in Los Angeles, they will listen and
learn so that they can identify pressing problems that get too
little attention. Then they will consider whether they can make a
meaningful difference with our influence and our investments,
whether it is a grant or a contract.
All of their strategies—more than two dozen across the
foundation—have emerged through this process of identifying
what we want to accomplish for people and where we can have
the greatest impact. Once they commit to an area of need, they
define their major goals and identify a clear path to achieving
them.
