Constructivism
Jean Piaget (1896-1980)
Founding Father of
Constructivism
Piaget's theory
of constructivism argues that
people produce knowledge
and form meaning based upon
their experiences
Constructivism
 Constructivism is a theory based on
observation and scientific study about
how people learn.
 It is a learning theory.
 This theory says that, People (child)
construct their own understanding and
knowledge of the world through
experiencing things and reflecting on
those experiences.
 It is an approach to learning that holds
people actively construct or make their
own knowledge based on their
experience.
 Piaget is widely known as father of
constructivism.
 Learning is individually constructed.
 Constructivism says learner construct
knowledge rather than passively taking
information.
 As people experience the world and
reflect upon those experiences they build
up their own representation and
incorporate new information into their
pre-existing knowledge.
 It enhances learning by creating
meaning from the experience.
 Constructivism utilizes interactive
teaching strategies to create meaningful
context that helps students to construct
knowledge based on their own
experience.
 This theory is learner centered.
 Every child is active constructor of
knowledge.
 It is a theory which incorporates learning by
doing.
 Learner construct his knowledge on the
basis of his interaction with the
environment.
Principles of
Constructivism
 Learners construct their own meaning
 New learning builds on prior
knowledge.
 Learning enhanced by social
interaction.
 Meaningful learning develops through
authentic task.
Constructivism in Teaching
 Constructivist classroom is one that
concentrates on students forming
his/her ideas, concepts and
conclusion which engages a more
student centered approach.
 It includes following activities:
experiment; research project; Field
trips; Films; Group discussion.
Important factors in
constructivism
 Prior knowledge
 Real and authentic problems
 Constructivist curriculum
 Social Interaction
 Constructivist assessment
 Technology and constructivism
Role of Teacher in
constructivism
 Teachers function more as facilitator who
coaches, mediated and help students to
develop and assess their understanding and
learning.
 Organize information around big ideas that
engage students interest, to assist students
in developing new insights and to connect
them with their previous learning.
 The activities are student-centered, and
students are encouraged to ask their own
questions, carry out their own experiments,
make their own analogies, and come to their
Benefits of Constructivism
 Children enjoy and learn more when they are
actively involved rather than passively
listening.
 Education works best when it concentrates
on thinking and understanding rather than on
rote memorization.
 Constructivism gives students ownership of
what they have learned.
 Students can able to express knowledge
through a variety of ways.
 Higher order thinking skills, problem solving
skills will increases.
