CONQUERING THE FEAR
OF FAILURE –
1. Understanding failure
2. Ways to cope
1. UNDERSTANDING FAILURE
Meaning of failure – 2 aspects
1. Unable to reach the predetermined goal- Visible Lack of success in relation to
a particular activity
A. Goals/ Targets set in a business/ academics – Unable to achieve (eg
not getting required profits
B. Intelligent failures – When the discoveries or inventions fail.
2. Unable to meet expectations – the effects are not visible
A. Emotionally disturbed state of mind caused some traumatizing event that is
not visible to the eyes.
B. Breakdown in relationships etc.
GOALS – HOW TO SET THEM
(1) Set very realistic and achievable goals – Understand your financial,
intellectual capacity to reach the goal. We need to visualize our goals
and then move in that direction, eg visualize a weight lifter first lifting
25 kg weights, then 50 kgs and gradually going towards the higher
weights to become a champion weight lifter.
(2) Come face to face with your fear- Plan out that if you are unable
to achieve your goal, what could be the possible implications – Eg
Mortgaging house means losing your home, if your business does not
take off. Once you have a plan in place to make your business take
off or what happens if the asset gets taken over then chances of
being a failure will not happen.
WAYS TO COPE WITH FEAR OF
FAILURE
(1) Positive Thinking – When one thinks Positively the chances of reaching our goal is more, because it
helps build self-confidence. Self-confidence will help achieve our goals
(2) Have a contingency Plan or Plan B ready –
Be prepared to have an alternative pathway ready incase the original plan doesn’t take off.
 This helps to curb the worse case scenario of a total failure, as you can salvage the situation if it goes
out of hand.
(3) Analyse all potential outcomes: Think of all the various aspects in which your Plan A may backfire,
then the fear of the unknown no longer exists. When no fear of the unknown then no fear of failure.
Identify the root cause of your fear.
(4) Have all the skill sets in place to achieve the goal
 Get all the training required in order to achieve that targeted goal.
The chances of failure is less.
REASONS FOR FEAR
1. Childhood or early life experiences – Some traumatic experiences
from childhood, or some consequences of bad decisions made in the
past. We have choices to either learn from those mistakes or stay
scared all our lives.
2. Perfectionism: Too much detail-oriented and always want
everything to be perfect, you may face anxiety around your ventures
to the point of not venturing at all.
3. Societal pressure : We are worried about what the Society will say.
Others opinion about you should not matter to you when you know
you are putting in your best. Eg Failure of Chandrayan 1 and then
subsequent success of Chandrayan 2
4. Fear of higher expectations and Competition. : With your first
success you may feel that people are pinning higher expectations and
not being able to meet those expectations causes fear. So also fear of
competition between any 2 entities causes fear.
2. TAKING CARE OF EMOTIONS
Ways to Manage your emotions
(1) Change the way you handle situations – Monotony in the way you
function causes depression or lows in your emotions. The moment
you are able to change your emotional mindset to a more positive
outlook of things, automatically you will have positive attitude and
able to handle emotions better. This helps to reinvest and reinvent in
a particular project.
(2) Acceptance of the situation: Accept that a failure has happened,
but also know its not the end of life or the road ahead. Take a break
if required but come back rejuvenated to take on challenges
(3) Avoid Isolation- Find support with a senior person, mentor or an
elder and take inspiration from their failures and how they coped and
moved on the path to success.
(4) Give yourself credit for the effort you have expended onto the
venture- Do not be too harsh with yourself. Give credit to the fact
that you put in your best effort and rest was fate or the wish of the
almighty.
(5) Focus on your strengths: Every venture will help bring out the
strengths and weaknesses, so focus on the strengths and try building
them than focusing on the for reasons for failure in the venture
(6) Never lose focus: If you lose focus then you will lose self-
confidence to do anything in life Eg of Scaling Mount Everest ….the
objective is you want to reach the top be it wind, storm, snow fall or
rain.
WAYS TO HANDLE STRESS
(1) Take a break and disconnect till you rejuvenate – Take that time for
yourself, but again do not isolate yourself. However, working nonstop maybe
tiring, so its perfectly ok to rest for a while. Rethink the whole plan and then
the time you restart, you are not starting from scratch but from experience.
(2) Plan a schedule- Your body functions better when there is a pattern. The
internal body clock regulates things like when you feel fatigued or energized
and has a significant impact on your ability to concentrate. So with a
schedule you will realize which are the best parts of the day you can work
more productively. For instance, I am aware that at about 3 p.m., my energy
and focus start to fade after lunch. Therefore, have more easier tasks
planned at that time like discussions etc with team members, so that will
give the brain some time away to recharge.
(3) Delegate Tasks- The key to being successful in business is to learn how
to delegate or outsource specific tasks. It is impossible for a single person to
run the whole show, and by delegating the task you can focus on the more
important things in the business.
(4) Never try to be perfect- Have ambitions beyond your means is
very stressful and that becomes an enemy for Success. It is ok to aim
high, but know your means to achieve that high.
(5) Don’t worry about the uncertainties- Stress over only things,
which are your control. List he things you cannot change, so it will
help you decide if not worthwhile to let stress over something that
can consume you.
(6) Learn to say No. The proven and quickest way to stress out is to
take on more than you can handle. When we create boundaries, the
negative feelings of being taken advantage of, burnout, stress, and
become people-pleasers, workaholics, lonely, or misunderstood will
slowly start to vanish.
THANK YOU
