The Call Of Cthulhu Or A Portent Of Nuclear Destruction
The Call of Cthulhu or a Portent of Nuclear Destruction Howard Phillip Lovecraft died in 1937
nearly a decade before the advent of the atomic bomb and the start of the nuclear age which
brought a new sense of fear and paranoia that lasts to this day. Is it possible that within his works of
science fiction and horror he, without knowing or realizing it, foresaw the coming of this new
terror before it entered the minds of man? Could the titular creature in The Call of Cthulhu be a
monstrous personification of nuclear destruction? Is it, that in trying to capture man s fear of the
unknown, he actually touched on a fear that man now knows today? Though Lovecraft wrote the
story as fiction that he states clearly and often that... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The narrator comments about a small sculpture of the creature Cthulhu as of a form which only
a diseased fancy could conceive (Lovecraft 74) It took the brightest minds in America (and
Europe) to come up with the Atomic bomb, and though many of them were working for the
sheer science of splitting an atom, some were in it to create a weapon to use against the enemies
of America and her allies. A nuclear explosion, much like Cthulhu himself is, with one sight of

detonation in 1945, Robert Oppenheimer quoted the Hindu Scripture Bhagvad Gita when he said,
Now I am become death, destroyer of worlds. This is an often misunderstood quoting, as he was

In today s day and age, manufacturers have the capability to collaborate with scientists to create
new gear for troops fighting for their country. However, rather than doing that, manufacturers and
scientists alike are investing billions of federal dollars in artificial soldiers and machinery. Rather
than increasing the physical protection of soldiers in battle conditions, they are frugally wasting
money on the possibility of a success in the development of a wartime fighter of artificial
intelligence. Meanwhile, troops overseas are being put at risk due to inadequate armor. By fitting
our troops with new tactical gear rather than investing in soldiers with artificial intelligence, one can
avoid the risk of faulty armor. Sending out... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
An example of one case is when counterfeit transistors were found on a night vision (or FLIR)
system used in the Navy s SH 60B helicopters. If those night vision systems were to fail, the Navy
has stated that the helicopter would be unable to conduct critical surface warfare missions. With
these numbers, the federal government has invested money in agencies that can lend a hand in
the decrease of faulty military supplies. One of these agencies is The Defense Advanced
Research Projects Agency (DARPA), which receives federal funding in order to develop future
scientific and technological military gear and devices. They are currently developing a solar
powered sensor of unprecedented proportions in their Integrated Sensor Structure program. It s a
stratospheric airship that would do persistent wide area surveillance, tracking, and engagement of
air and ground targets. There are also plans for a system that neutralized surface to air threats to
aircrafts. One risk of artificial intelligence is that machines can malfunction and not know when to
stop advancing on the enemy or distinguish between an enemy and a citizen, and not have a risk of
unnecessary carnage. Today s modern warfare is high paced, mobile, and technologically advanced.

Impact Of Literary Events On Life
Impact of Literary Events on Life
Before I talk about how I learn literacy, I want to introduce my mother tongue Chinese, because
learning Chinese characters is different from others languages. Chinese characters are logograms, of
which we have almost ten thousands Chinese characters in our written language, but only a few
thousands in common use. Most Chinese characters are monosyllable. In modern Chinese,
characters mainly divided into simplified and traditional, which Wikipedia explains as kinds of
characters used in Asian countries and regions: Simplified forms of certain characters are used in
mainland China, Singapore, and Malaysia; the corresponding traditional characters are used in
Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau, and to a limited extent in South Korea.
In my opinion, simplified characters are easy to write, but traditional characters have more sense of
beauty. Generally, in art or calligraphy people use traditional characters; in the daily life people use
simplified characters. Of course, this only happens in China mainland, because in Taiwan, Hong
Kong, Macau they only use traditional Chinese.
I study Chinese at a very young age, so that I cannot remember how I start to learn it. I think
maybe start at some simple characters like, 小(small), 大(big), 人(people or human), taught to
me by my parents. Then I begin to learn the Chinese phonetics, the phonetics like English letter a b

Japanese Americans From The 1950s Essay
In this paper, the story of the Japanese Americans from the 1940s will be discussed in detail. In
addition, the information on how they were put into camps when the United States was attacked
by Japanese airplanes in 1942 will be explained. Also, the reaction of Japanese Americans will be
presented as well as some of their beliefs about interracial marriages. In the Japanese American film,
it explains that the attack of the Japanese s regime against the United Statescaused a war against
Japan, but it also affected Japanese who were born in the United States. The film, it also explained
how the United States Government violated the rights of thousands of US citizens from Japanese
descendants because they were put into camps and treated as enemies due to the fact that the
Japanese regime attacked the United States. Thousands of Japanese were put into camps in
Manzanar, California. The Japanese Americans were isolated from society. In 1988, Donald Reagan
apologized to the Japanese people and gave them monetarily compensation for the injustice they
experienced by the American Government during the 1940s. According to the film, the children of
those who were put into camps did not know about what had happened until they grown and were
asked about the topic of the Japanese camps. The older generation stated that they did not reveal the
truth to their children because they did not want to create hate in their children. Also, in the film it

Citizen Kane Meaning Essay
The use of lighting in this film was very pretentious and was used to add good aspects to Citizen
Kane. The lighting changed based off what the mood corresponded for example, some scenes had
a copacetic or pleasant mood. In the beginning, the scene was a very formidable scene. The lighting
was dark which portrayed fear towards the audience. The mood was implying fear and almost an
alarming mood for the viewers the lighting helped entail this by giving dark, hair raising lighting.
The type of lighting they used in this particular scene was not frontal lighting, but actually the exact
opposite they used backlighting. Not just the opening scene included lighting that imposed horror
to the audience, there were other scenes that used a type of lighting... Show more content on

The lighting also helped the audience recognize there was a storm occurring which can also help
portray fear. Another scene that had great lighting that impacted the story was the party scene .
This scene was the scene where people sat around the table, toasting and one man stood up
shouting should we take Spain to war? . I noticed that the lighting in the beginning of the scene
was darker but as soon as the band hit the first few beats, the lighting grew much brighter, showing
the mood of this particular scene was upbeat and happy. This scene was also much brighter (and
mood) than the opening scene where the lighting and mood were dark. Overall, the lighting in this
film was very well done whether it showed the dark and fearful mood or to portray a storm or
something along the lines of that. The lighting also did change throughout the film primarily to
correspond the mood if it was supposed to cause fear in viewers, the lighting was darker and made
the characters look more sinister like in the scene where Kane held the snow globe while

Stag and one other poem in the section discuss the poet s treatment of conflict between man and

The Stag was written by a poet named Ted Hughes and is similar to the poem Roe Deer in many
respects because they feature many similar ideas. The poem is about the distant relationship
between humans and nature, in this case it is a Stag the represents the natural side and its actions

Ted Hughes expresses part of his feeling as he says pulled aside the camouflage of their terrible
planet this tells us that he sympathises with the stag and is disgusted at our behaviour. It is also
interesting that the animals who have been brought into are world have also been turned barbaric,
such as the hounds which have been taught to hunt the stag for no reason as it does not need to kill
it for survival reasons it is just doing it through command of the hunters.
The poem also portrays the Stags innocence and helplessness by using phrases such as his limbs
all cried different directions to his lungs, which only wanted to rest and doubled back weeping As
I said before Roe Deer written by the same poet features a similar
encounter between human and wildlife. It shows the lack of communication between nature and us.
They happened into my dimension backs up the different world theory that Ted Hughes has and in
The
Stag there is a constant contrast between nature and us. The poem is about a person having an
encounter with a Roe Deer but because of us driving nature away it emphasis on how magical it
is to see a wild animal. Ted Hughes uses words in this poem such as secret deerhood and hesitated
as a way to describe how the deer have become secret to keep away from humans and hesitated
shows us how scared the wildlife is of us and our technology. Throughout

Why Did The Athens Build The Parthenon
The Athenians built the Parthenon in 447 BC, as a replacement of their first temple and a
monument of victory after leading the Greeks to victory against the Persians. Funded by the
wealthy members of the society and money appropriated by the recently moved from the Bank of
Delian league, the Parthenon stood as political statement of democracy in addition to its religious

their height of power. Being a cultural center for art and the leaders of the other Greek City States

The Darling By Anton Pavlovich Chekhov
All throughout time women have been seen as lesser equals to men. For most individuals it has
been a natural instinct to assume the roles of women. However, making these assumptions is
degrading and unjust. While some women try and object the status quo, others accept it and
continue on with their lives. In The Darling by Anton Pavlovich Chekhov, the protagonist Olenka
can be seen as a prime example of the perfect women. In Chekhov s short story, a young Russian
woman named Olenka marries twice after the death of each husband. Soon after each husband
passes, Olenka begins to isolate herself until she discovers a new person to fall in lovewith. This
pattern reveals that Olenka relies on others for satisfaction and acceptance. The... Show more

devastated and had nothing exciting to live for. And for a second time, a man in her life whom
she cherished had died. However, after only three months of grieving, Olenka had met another
male figure in her life named Vassily Andreitch Pustovalov. For Olenka, this had once again
given her the optimism to see through a fulfilling future with a partner by her side. Immediately
after meeting Vassily, a timber merchant, she befriends him and becomes infatuated with his
presence. The speaker goes on to state that After seeing Olenka to her gate, he said good bye and

eyes she saw his dark beard. She liked him very much (Chekov). In these lines it is evident that
Olenka was desperate for affection once again, and craved to be desired by someone else. Finding
such an immediate connection when meeting someone for the first time is odd, especially
considering her husband had just passed three months prior. To no surprise Vassily visited Olenka
three days later, which ensured her that a marriage was to be arranged. Just as in Olenka s

The Effects of Technology on the Accounting Profession
The Effects of Technology on the Accounting Profession
In today s business society, the accounting technology whether it be software or hardware is a vital
part of just about every major business. Many people overlook the importance of the role of
accounting technology in business and in the accounting profession. The fact is technology such as
accounting information systems can make or break a business.
Utilization of Information Technology in the Retail Businesses (Wal Mart)

accounting technology to track information about their customers and inventory (Lazerus, 2010).

With the development accounting information systems managers have inherited the task of
learning and training their employees what they learn. For example, in a retail store accounting
systems are used to order, locate and organize inventory so supervisors are tasked with learning and
training employees to perform these tasks. Because employees and managers can now perform such
tasks easily it has limited the jobs that accounting professionals had cornered as theirs in the past.
Because of accounting systems managers have also inherited the task of learning how to perform
minor troubleshooting of their systems and to train others to perform the task. Accounting systems
demand more with regard to computer literacy but provides significant advantages such as helping
organizations to handle more tasks in a timely and efficient manner. Accounting softwareis an
important part of information technology, which relates to computer applications that enable a
company to generate, store, program, and retrieve data as and when needed (Rampur, 2011). An
example is an employee using an accounting information system to analyze inventory with a couple
of clicks of the computer. Accounting technology definitely has made the accounting field more
competitive. This is because with the use of such technology individuals outside of the profession
can perform many

the student perspective. Students who are graduating from high school barely come out with less

Resting Metabolic Rate Progressive Submaximal Exercise Test
Mike Haischer Introduction
In these experiments we talked about the Resting Metabolic Rate and Progressive Submaximal
Exercise Testing to determine a subjects carbon dioxide production to oxygen consumption. This
was done by having examples provided for us to calculate the RMR by using a formula, (X ml/kg
/min x weight in kg) / 1000 mL= # L/min, to determine the number of calories burned at rest, as
well having subjects perform the standardized treadmill test for 12 15 minutes for the Progressive
Submaximal Exercise Testing.
Resting Metabolic Rate is the energy expenditure at rest in well rested, fasted state in a supine
position. For an accurate reading of RMR, one should not eat or drink within 6 hours before
testing, refrain from any physical activity 12 hours prior, and no caffeine/tobacco/medication
consumption beforehand. The purpose of finding RMR is to find the number of kilocalories that
are required each day. RMR can be depend on factors such as body composition, genetics, gender,
and age.
A Progressive Submaximal Exercise Test is a test that estimates VO2 max, oxygen consumption,
and is performed by gradually increasing the intensity of exercise. This test helps predict the
maximal aerobic capacity of an individual as well as measuring the heart rate and VO2 max. While

Anne Elliot Persuasion Essay
Our heroine of Jane Austen s Persuasion, Anne Elliot, is one of the greatest, and most appealing,
woman presented in all of Jane Austen s novels. We are introduced to the novel where Anne Elliot,
eight years after breaking her engagement to Captain Wentworth, has a developed unique character
as Austen s female heroine: she is the daughter of a bankrupt baronet, a 27 year old spinster, an
introvert, and an easy victim to persuasion. Such qualities would not make Anne a marriageable
young lady, but they do not define Anne s whole well being. Without even realizing it, Anne Elliot
turns herself into becoming one of the most charming women in the novelthrough what she already
possesses in her character.
The Regency era of England shows how considerate it was women to accomplish many qualities to
deem herself a worthy in her beauty, etiquette, and talents. Comparing Anne to all the other eligible
women in the novel, she would rank very low. Elizabeth is the beautiful sister ... Show more content

Metaphysical Poetry
Metaphysical Poetry: Much More Than Wit The two main views of metaphysical poetry, as
composed by poets A.E. Housman and T.S. Eliot, are vastly different. Eliot s view of
metaphysical poetry is a very positive and respectful one. He admires the uniqueness of the
metaphysical poets when he describes them as reflective poets as opposed to merely intellectual
ones. Eliot says they have the ability to feel their thought as immediately as the odor of a rose,
compared to the strictly thought driven traditional poetryof lyrical poets. Housman s view is
significantly more harsh and critical. In reference to metaphysical poetry, he says that poetry, as a
label for this particular commodity, is not appropriate. According to Housman,... Show more content

An interesting shift, as well as an example of assonance, is seen when the speaker says, but oh,
to no end (Line 6). In this moment of lament, the speaker begins to seem pathetic and his other
commands to God begin to seem more like emotional begging. He is troubled that his reason [...]
proves weak and untrue (Lines 7 8). In line 7, the concept of reason is personified as an
ambassador to the town when the speaker says, Reason, your viceroy in me, me [...] This line
contains anadiplosis, followed by an example of consonance found in the phrase, should defend,

the poem becomes more personal when the speaker expresses his overall feelings toward God by
saying, Yet dearly I love you, and would be loved fain. The speaker uses consonance to show he
knows his love is requited. However, he feels he cannot accept God s gift of love because he is

God to Divorce [him] (Line 11) from his sin. Consonance is present when the speaker

Christianity In Beowulf By Seamus Heaney
The novel Beowulf by Seamus Heaney is told in late medieval Anglo Saxon Britain, after they were
already christianized, but its about early medieval Scandinavia, which is pagan. Although Beowulf
is believed to be pagan, the narrator of the poem makes constant references to God suggesting that
hero Beowulf s trust in God can be translated into christianity. The Angelo Saxon legends were
passed down through oral tradition, so by the time the monks got it, they added several christian
elements to it. The author may have written it to influence the pagan people at the time. In Beowulf,
there are many pagan practices described, the relationship between God(s), and shows how the

In a time of both social and political tension in the United States, Gil Scott Heron left a massive
impression as a musician and poet. Later earning the nickname, The Godfather of Rap, Heron
played a major role in producing soul, jazz, and blues music that was associated with social and
political issues in the United Statesduring the 1970 s and 1980 s. Heron studied at Lincoln
University, following in the footsteps of other prominent African Americanindividuals such as
Langston Hughes and Melvin Tolson. Hughes, along with fellow poet, LeRoi Jones, were two
African American academics whose overwhelming influence on Heron would resonate in all of his
albums. Following his graduation, Heron teamed up with fellow Lincoln University classmate,
Brian Jackson, to produce numerous albums. Mainly concerning racial and social injustice, these

Heron believed that it was corrupt how a country can put people on the moon, but not support its

Professional Learning Communities
Introduction
Schools are constantly looking for ways in which to improve. Research has revealed several
attributes of a school that proves to lead towards student learning and higher achievement including
strong leadership, clear and shared mission, vision, values, and goals, collective inquiry, action
oriented, collaborative teams that work interdependently, a focus on student learning and results
oriented. These ideas are represented within a Professional Learning Community (PLC). To become
a PLC, a staff must make changes in their actions and work together focusing on student learning.
PLC s have evolved out of failed school reform measures. It attempts to make permanent changes to
a school s culture to affect change in student ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Safe environments are built and there s a respect for diversity. Another highly important factor
in effective schools is a highly effective leader. Leadership is a key characteristic in a PLC also.
The principal acts as an instructional leader building relationships with the staff and developing
high moral. These characteristics are all evident in a PLC. When schools truly begin to align
their practices with a commitment to learning for all, the educators within them begin to function
as a Professional Learning Community (DuFour, DuFour Eaker, 2008, p. 21). The PLC is more
of an re culturing instead of a school reform. It is an ongoing process through which a staff works
collaboratively to share learning goals. In order to reach the goals set forth in laws such as NCLB,
a school must change it s culture to maintain an ongoing collaborative process to enhance everyone
s effectiveness to improve student behavior ( Nygard, 2010).
Four Essential Questions
The first role in building a successful learning community is to formulate a solid base of shared
mission, vision, values, and goals. These four are the building blocks of a solid foundation for
decision making for school improvement. Mission or purpose is the first block and focuses on
the question Why do we exist? The second block is vision or the direction the school is headed. It
asks the question What kind of school or district do we hope to become? A values block asks How

The effect of the Lords unanimous 2 ruling was to uphold 3firmly the doctrine4 of corporate
personality, as set out in the Companies Act 1862, so that creditors of an insolvent company could
not sue the company s shareholders to pay up outstanding debts. Facts[edit] MrAron Salomon made

The company in this case has been regarded by Vaughan Williams J. as the agent of Aron
Salomon. I should rather liken the company to a trustee for him a trustee improperly 20 brought
into existence by him to enable him to do what the statute prohibits. It is manifest 21 that the
other members of the company have practically no interest in it, and their names have merely
been used by Mr.Aron Salomon to enable him to form a company, and to use its name in order
to screen himself from liability. This view of the case is quite consistent with In re George
Newman Co.[4] In a strict legal sense the business may have to be regarded as the business of
the company; but if any jury were asked, Whose business was it? they would say Aron Salomon
s, and they would be right, if they meant that the beneficial interest in the business was his. I do
not go so far as to say that the creditors of the company could sue him. In my opinion, they can
only reach him through the company. Moreover, Mr.Aron Salomon s liability to indemnify the
company in this case is, in my view, the legal consequence of the formation of the company in
order to attain a result not permitted by law. The liability does not arise simply from the fact that
he holds nearly all the shares in the company. A man may do that and yet be under no such
liability as Mr.Aron Salomon has come under. His liability rests on the purpose for which he
formed the company, on the way he formed it, and on

New England Patriots Deflated Footballs
I do believe that the New England Patriots deflated footballs in the American Football Conference
championship game against the Indianapolis Colts. The game was held on January 18, 2015, at
Gillette Stadium in Massachusetts. The National Football League requires footballs to be inflated
between 12.5 and 13.5 pounds per square inch of air (2016 NFL Rulebook). Before halftime the
Colts linebacker, D Qwell Jackson, intercepted a pass from the Patriots quarterback, Tom Brady.
Later, Jackson said the football appeared spongy, which describes the texture of an underinflated
ball (Deflategate Timeline). At halftime all twelve of the Patriots footballs were measured, and all
twelve were below the minimum pressure (Deflategate). After the game when the National Football
Leaguelaunched an investigation, they hired Ted Wells to... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Before the report was published, the Patriots argued that the pressure gauges used to measure
the footballs were inaccurate; however, during the testing two different gauges were used, and
both were made by different companies (Deflategate). Also, the gauges were tested after the
game, and both were determined to be accurate (Deflategate). The Patriots also argued that the
pressure temperature law was the cause of the low pressure in the footballs (Deflategate). This
law, also known as Gay Lussac s law, stated that a decrease in temperature would cause a
decrease in pressure and vice versa (ChemTeam: Gas Law Gay Lussac s Law). The Patriots said
that according to this law when the footballs were brought outside in the cold air from the warm
locker room, where the balls were inflated, the decrease in temperature caused a decrease in
pressure (Deflategate). HeadSmart labs, a well trusted scientific consulting group, stated that after
accounting for all environmental factors present during the time of the game the pressure
temperature law could cause at most one and eight tenths pounds per square inch of air to be

How To Manage Iot And Byod Threats While Still Preserving
How to manage IoT and BYOD threats while still preserving productivity Sizing up the threat
Securing Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) Internet of Things (IoT) devices are currently two of the
most challenging areas of network security. BYOD has been a trend for a number years now, yet
many companies are still struggling to successfully secure these endpoint devices. Organizations are
grappling with different security approaches. While some organization have not taken steps to
secure these endpoints yet, other organizations have added Enterprise Mobility Management

The network integration, and therefore the exposure, is much deeper than BYOD, and IoT
devices usually have very little security, and generally nothing close to enterprise grade security.
The first major IoT device attack shocked the industry in October of 2016, before IoT devices
were really in the enterprise space. An hacker launched an IoT DDoS attack on Dyn, using the
Mirai virus to infect vulnerable IoT home security devices and turned them into attack bots focused
on the Dyn enterprise network (for more information see our blog on this topic). This sent ripples
of fear through organizations that realized attackers could soon leverage enterprise IoT devices to
attack internal networks. To counter the threat IoT devices introduce, organizations need to secure
all endpoints. This white paper will explore endpoint security, and how the NAC solutions of
yesterday have evolved into broader Security Automation and Orchestration Solutions designed as a
security integrator that coordinates all endpoint visibility, control and automated response, which
ensures secure enterprise adoption of both IoT and BYOD devices. The Changing LandscapeAs
organizations rapidly add IoT and BYOD devices, it is critical to ensure this access does not
compromise network security. In the past, enterprise networks were self contained within

Jane Addams and Hull House Essay
Jane Addams and Hull House
Born in Cederville, Illinois, on September 6, 1860, Jane Addams founded the world famous social
settlement of Hull House. From Hull House, where she lived and worked from it s start in 1889 to
her death in 1935, Jane Addams built her reputation as the country s most prominent women

the first women to win the Nobel Peace Prize.

Many reformers at this time such as Jacob Riis focused on the poor and immigrants moral
improvements and ignored the crippling impact of low wages and dangerous working conditions.
Organizations expelled immigrants from drinking and other forbidden behaviors such as
prostitution and gambling. What these reformers didn t understand was that the conditions that
immigrants faced, led them to act these ways. Jane Addams realized this. Addams developed a new
weapon against poverty: the settlement houses.
Addams toured in Europe in 1883 and was impressed by Toynbee Hall, which was a charity
workers residence situated deep in a London slum. When Addams returned to Chicago in 1889, they
purchased and refurnished Charles J. Hull s mansion and opened the Hull House, in a settlement
approach.
In 1892, Addams delivered a speech in a lecture to the Ethnic Cultural Societies about the settlement
housing. These societies probably had political connections to human rights issues. The speech is
called The Subjective Necessity for Social Settlements, and its main points were to give the
immigrants and underprivileged the same opportunities as the rest of the population. Addams states,

Morgan Spurlock brings up this issue in Super Size Me: In the U.S., we ve given corporations all
the powers and freedoms of an individual but with none of the responsibility, (Super Size Me). The
government does not enforce rules about what corporations can and cannot do when it comes to

How Did Pirenne Contribute To The Decline Of Civilization
Pirenne As a Belgian historian, Henri Pirenne challenged the long held belief that the decline of
civilization occurred because of the Germanic invasions in the Roman Empire. Renaissance and
Reformation thinkers, Enlightenment philosophers, and Modernist historians all pointed to the
Germanic invasions that begin in the fifth century as giving rise to the decline and fall of the
Roman Empire. Instead, Pirenne points to the swift and surprising spread of Islam as the reason
behind the break with traditional antiquity. Islam cut off trade in the Mediterranean, thus making
the Mediterranean Sea and Musulman lake. For the first time in history, the center of life shifted
northward from the Mediterranean. Pierenne states that although there was a flood of Germanic
immigration to the Roman Empire, the invaders were simply absorbed into the Empire. The
German language died away. The Gothic conception of royalty was lost. All Germanic law was
crushed and the organization of the judiciary was entirely Roman. In Spain and Gaul, the Germanic
character was modified by Roman manners and Roman institutions. In the Empire, royal insignia
went from Germanic to Roman. The agricultural system of the Roman Empire continued without
addition after the invasions. Spanish... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The Rule Of The King
After the failure of the Judges, Israel desired a king, so they could be like all other nations.
(1Sam 5:8 paraphrased) Creating a United Monarchy meant many changes would have to take
place. At the time Israel had been theocracy and God was their King, however the elders had a
different plan. They wanted a king, even if it meant rejecting God. God told Samuel to listen to
the people, appoint them a king, but make sure they understand what the king who reigns over
them will do Samuel explained to the people that their sons would be part of the army, their
children would have to work for the king, they also would have to pay high taxes. The people
refused to listen to Samuel. So God gave them a king. The LORD replied, Do as they say, and
give them a king. (1 Sam 8:22 NLT) Then Samuel agreed and sent the people home. God was
rejected and a human monarchy would now rule Israel.
Unknown to the people God had chosen a man to serve as their king. (1Sam 9:16 17 paraphrased)
According to Hindson and Yates Saulwas the people s choice, more than God s choice for a king.
They focused on his outward appearance more than his heart. Tall, dark, and handsome, Saul was
the chosen one the appointed king. According to Hindson and Yates Despite Saul s strong
beginning (chap. 11) and being warned by Samuel to honor the Mosaic covenant (chap.12), Saul s
poor choices caused his kingdom to deteriorate rapidly. (chap.13 15) Saul s blatant disobedience

Nuclear Contamination And The Atomic Bomb Testing
We retired early that evening, and slept well. With the pressure we had been under now
somewhat abated, we awoke the next morning rested and refreshed, ready for whatever the day
might bring. Stapleya and Wisceya were eager to see the wonders of Las Vegas. Estelle and Jill
had told them enough to pique their curiosity, although the fur girls insisted it was impossible
and we must be kidding them. Compared to their home world, I am sure our entire planet
seemed like an impossibility, so why they would balk at one more impossible thing, I could not
say. We pulled out of the motel parking lot before dawn and drove straight down Interstate 15
without stopping except to buy fuel or to answer nature s call. Although we had eschewed
Interstate highways in prior day s travels, we really had no choice now. Besides, we had no
reason to suspect Alex would be looking for us here. Passing through the St. George area, Estelle
remarked on the nuclear contamination in the area from the atomic bomb testing, and the many
diverse cases of cancer in the people living here then. Our extraterrestrial visitors became curious
as to those events which led us into a long discussion of warfare on Earth and the horrors it had

inhabitants lack belief in these authorities; hence Roosevelt devised a rule for unrestrained reform,

Essay about Euthanasia is Our Right to Die
Euthanasia is Our Right to Die
By ruling euthanasia illegal, America s justice system is violating one of our most natural rights,
our freedom of choice. In all respects, the right to die is as natural as the right to live. Webster s
dictionary defines euthanasia as an easy and painless death or an act or method of causing death
painlessly. Euthanasia, when administered correctly and under the right conditions can be a humane
and moral procedure. There are so many misconceptions and cliches surrounding euthanasia today
that it has become very difficult to make an informed decision about the subject. By examining

There are four key arguments, which also translate into philosophical concerns, associated with
euthanasia. The first is a person s right to decide about his or her own life. People take for granted
the life affecting choices they make on a daily basis, what career path to follow, when to marry,
and when to have children just to name a few. The decision of when to die, without legal
intervention, should also be considered as one of these natural rights. The second philosophical
concern is that denying terminally ill patients the natural right to die is unfair and cruel. This point
goes hand in hand with the subject of ordinary versus extraordinary treatment. A terminally ill
patient has and will continue to have the right to prolong their life by means of ordinary treatment
such as medicines and surgeries that do not involve excessive pain, expense, etc. When it becomes
impossible for a person to continue living by means of ordinary treatment they are next given the
choice to sustain their life by means of extraordinary treatment or they are given the option of
refusing treatment. Many people choose the latter option on the basis of extraordinary treatment
being associated with methods deemed unusual, difficult, dangerous, and expensive. The reality of
refusal of treatment is a grim one. What can be crueler than to let terminally ill

Creation Stories
By studying the various creation stories of different religions, we can learn about what members
of each religion believe. For instance, Christians believe that God created the world in 7 days and
all humans are descendants of Adam and Eve. All of these creation stories are out of the ordinary
and are extremely different from what happens in the world today. The creation stories are very
limited in their explanations, and fail to explain the creation of anything aside from the earth. They
do not explain the stars, planets, and galaxies we are knowledgeable about today. As human s
knowledge of the world increases, it becomes more and more difficult to believe in the creation
stories and the ideas associated with various religions. Creation... Show more content on

This directly relates to the fact that humans are naive. Without little or no proof, humans are
inclined to believe what a relative tells them. For example, parents tell their children what is
wrong and right, what to believe and not to believe in, and their children believe it. According to
the packet about Creation Stories, Muslims believe in Adam and Eve, and how they ate a
certain fruit and were exiled from paradise, and their children believe it. Muslims tell other
people about the creation story and suddenly, other people believe in the story too. It is the same
case for Christians, Buddhists, Jews, and all other religions. Humans believe in what others tell
them, which is why religion spread quickly and is so prominent in the world today. In the article
by Baggini, he says that humans need something to bridge a gap, so they will believe whatever
to fit the gap. Nowadays, humans have a lot of knowledge on how science thinks the earth and
everything else was created, and it has proof. However, it is a relatively new idea that does not
have as many followers as religion does. Religion along with their creation stories prevails simply
because humans continue to spread the ideas and other humans continue to believe

Feminism In The Yellow Wallpaper
One feminist theory is that whenever woman hold power in society they are treated as the other
. Women have always been seen as domestic or the care takers of the family; women stay home
with the kids, tend to dinner and the cleaning. That being said whenever a woman, like Jane, tries
to step out of the nurturing role, men tend to feel intimidated and was unsure how to react to
such a thing happening (like when John and Jane s brother diagnose her to be mentally ill all
because she desires to write). In the time of the story, Jane is seen as mentally ill because she
desires to read and write while her husband who happens to be a physician of high standing says
she tends to have slightly hysterical tendency(Page 1, paragraph 5). In The Yellow Wallpaper
Gilman uses the yellow wallpaper to symbolize Jane, who represents the way women use to be
treated as the lesser in society.
In the time this story was written, back in 1899, men and women were not viewed as equals and
this short story is a prime example. As the readers go through the story they can literally see the
shifts in her sanity by her illness and the almost revolting yellow wallpaper, which represents all
the women who in that time period were overlooked by the men in society. In 1899, women did
not have much power. Women were to assume the role of becoming a wife and tending to the
husband s needs, they are not their own individual. She even says he is very careful and loving and
hardly lets me stir

Disconnection And Alienation In St Patrick s College By...
An author s personal experience gives authenticity to their text. Peter Skrzynecki, an Australian
poet of Polish origin emigrated to Australia shortly before the end of World War II. His
assimilation into his newfound homeland is portrayed in his emotive poetry, where he explores his
disconnection and alienation. The way in which Skrzynecki writes about his personal experiences
gives an authentic insight into the perspective of a migrant, allowing the audience to better
understand the challenging emotions evoked by the migrant experience. These emotions are
clearly seen in Skrzynecki s poem St Patrick s College, where he delves back through his
experiences at school and highlights the disconnection and alienation he felt being a migrant. This
disconnection is further expressed in Feliks Skrzynecki, where Skrzynecki alludes to his
detachment from even his father. These feelings of disconnection and alienation shown by
Skrzynecki in his poems, allows the audience to understand the effects of growing up as a migrant.
The process of transitioning into a new context can put pressure on an individual to belong, leading
to disconnection for the individual if they don t belong. Peter Skrzynecki was enrolled into a
Catholic School after his family migrated from Europe to Australia. The effects of this change in
context for Skrzynecki is portrayed in his poem St Patrick s College, where he gives authentic
personal insight into the challenges faced by migrants growing up in a new

more precisely identifying and diagnosing mental disorder.
Major Depressive Disorder is common disorder, widely distributed in the population, and usually
associated with substantial symptom severity and functional impairment. The condition can
adversely affect how a person functions in their families, social, occupational and educational
areas of their life. A major depressive episode is characterized by the presence of a severely
depressed mood that persists for at least two weeks. Episodes may present themselves as an
isolated incident or recurrent and are categorized as mild ( few symptoms in excess of minimum

Converse College Essay
Converse College is a private college that realized that high tuitions were creating serious problems
for current and potential students to enroll in private colleges. Therefore, Converse was given the
task of motivating middle class students to have the experience of studying in private schools.
CHOICE 1: Reset tuition to a significantly lower price for traditional undergraduate students.
PROS:
Being pioneers in this new business model is an attractive opportunity to stand out from the crowd
as the steady increase in the tuitions in higher educations is a national concern. Therefore, more
students and prospects may be interested in Converse College.
Based on the forecast of increase in tuition fees that Converse College has established, students
could be able to save a considerable amount after a few years. Therefore students would ... Show

PROS:
Certainly, when frizzing student s tuition, they and their families would be sure that their tuition
would not face annual increases.
In addition, this proposal would be attractive to students and cause increased enrollment of middle
class students.
CONS:
A disadvantage is that this proposal is a short term solution to a long term problem. Since the
school has increases in operating costs every year. Therefore, the college has to generate additional
profits to offset these costs.
In addition, future generations would suffer from even higher fees because operating costs would
still require payment. Therefore the cycle of annual tuition increases would start again but now in a
more accelerated manner.
CHOICE 3: Provide students with Loan Repayment Program (LRP), which guarantees that any
student without employment after college would have her loans covered by an insurance policy.
PROS:
This program would alleviate the financial burden for graduate students who have difficulty finding
work and paying their

Disadvantages Of Agriculture
Most of the people of the countryside in the developing nations are farm labourers, cultivators or
the small scale producers of manufactured goods and services. There exists an inverse relation
between the per capita income of a nation and the size of its rural population. Though a large part
of the total population is working and living in rural areas and is engaged in primary activities
especially farming, the share of agriculturein gross domestic product has been minimal which is the
main reason behind the low income generation in countries with large rural population. This
phenomenon clearly draws our attention to one of the most important issues in development i.e. the
pervasiveness of low agricultural productivity .
There has been ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In most of the less developed and developing countries the people involved in agriculture mostly
belong to the lower strata of the society. They are looked down upon and so is their profession
consequently agriculture is not seen as an attractive profession. This biasness takes various forms
out of which the, one which holds utmost importance for the large and small rural cultivators is
the inadequate provision of infrastructure and social overhead capital: crop storage facilities,
health clinics and schools, farm extension services, agricultural research, irrigation canals and
farm credit programs are deficient, if they exist at all. It means that for agricultural sector in
general and small scale agriculture in particular to prosper, it is necessary the above mentioned
large scale investment programs must be financed by the state itself to raise the productivity of
agriculture. Given the series of problems in agricultural sector it may take decades for positive
results to show their signs.
The state is less concerned with agriculture as they might not have adequate funds to invest in
agriculture, or they concentrate on short term gains achieved through industries and investment in
the urban areas. Apart from the investment in rural infrastructure to increase productivity,
investment in social sector initiatives like education and health is much needed in the rural areas.
These initiatives will raise the value of human capital and boost the productivity of the

Interpersonal Communication Skill Of Feedback
The interpersonal communication skill of feedback is essential for hospital nurses to give a suitable
care to each patient because it enables the nurses to learn, and improve their motivation,
performance and efficiency that assist to achieve their goal which is to help the patients heal. The
interpersonal communicationskill of feedback is a system of conveying information between two
people regarding the receiver s performance (Baker et al. 2013). In general, feedback is employed
to deliver information about interim objectives and recent behaviour or performance, and to guide
individuals on expected enhancement and outcomes for the organisation (Baker et al. 2013).
Receiving feedback provides individuals with information on their strengths and weaknesses,
which allow them to have an opportunity to build self improvement plans if the individuals are
willing to change their behaviour or performance (De Janasz et al. 2014). Suitable feedback within
an organisation results in positive behaviour changes which improve efficiency of the organisation
(Baker et al. 2013). There is evidence showing that supportive feedback employments promote
improved openness to feedback, increased feedback seeking behaviour, and inspiration to use
feedback and change performance behaviour (Baker et al. 2013). When nurses identify feedback as
a helpful resource that can enhance the quality of care, feedback can lead to an outstanding
advancement promoting the nurses well being (Giesbers et al.

Essay On Thermodynamics
An Overview of Thermodynamics and Bioenergetics with respect to Biochemistry
What is Thermodynamics?
It is that field of physical science which describes the relationship between heat and other forms of
mechanical, chemical and electrical energy. It basically deals with the basics of heat to the kinetic
theories to the laws of thermodynamics. Thermodynamics is widely used by biochemists to
understand chemical reactions and processes taking place in an organism. Thermodynamics is
based to three laws, out of which the first two are of importance for the biochemists.
First Law Of Thermodynamics
The first law is also known as the the law of conservation of energy. The law states that the energy
can neither be created nor destroyed but it can be changed from one form to another. Meaning
energy in the universe remains constant but can be changed from one form to another. The transfer
of energy from one form to another is an inefficient process. Energy is lost in many ways when
work is done ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Entropy is basically the measure of energy which is not available in a closed system for
mechanical work or in easier words the degree of randomness in a system. An good biochemical
example is that of proteins. A polypeptide that is folded into a protein is more confined in
orientation that that of unfolded protein chain, which can be freely undergo into any
conformation. The polypeptide chain that is folded has a negative entropy change and the
polypeptide that is unfolded, the entropy increases and the change is positive. Entropy is can only
be measured in a closed system. As the organism is not a closed system, there are a number of
difficulties in measuring entropy changes for biological processes. The Gibbs Free Energy (G) is a
better indicator of spontaneous change, as it takes the enthalpy change into consideration as

Many people believe that previous generation of Americans was completely different than the
generation that lives now days. Ideology and interests have completely changed. For instance, we
all know that previous generation cared a lot for peace in the world, human rights and equality of
mankind. Martin Luther King, John. F. Kennedy and Malcolm X are people who fought for
equality among people and most famous representatives of Generation X. But compared to the
previous generation, my generation is completely different, and many people are having a debate

It s for all these reasons why the author calls them Generation Q the Quite Americans. Moreover,
Friedman tries to analyze and understand why current generation is so quiet and why they are
quietly pursuing their idealism. In his opinion, more and more people of Generation Q spend
time online, hiding behind computer screens and trying not to be social. There are no big and
old crusades like back in days. Instead of going to Washington D.C. and be against the Iraq war,
the generation Q writes comments in Internet, as a result, spends more and more time online. The
writer believes that generation Q must be doing itself a favor, and America a favor, if it
demanded answers and results from candidates to many issues the Greediest Generation is leaving
them, specifically, huge budget deficit, climate change and Social Security reform. And the author
concludes the essay by saying that Generation Q does not have enough courage to handle all those
problems the previous generation is leaving them. A week after the release of Generation Q , Rob
Fishman, Cornell University graduate, shares his opinion on Generation Q. In his essay, Generation
of Generation Q Fishman underlines the fact that our generation is complacent and there are
excuses for it (73). Technology had had a distinctively effect by encouraging us to look inward. In

Analysis Of Paul Bloom s People Don T Want Equality, They...
The argument I chose to analyze was People Don t Actually Want Equality, They Want Fairness
by Paul Bloom. In this argument, Bloom writes about how people want fairness for the same
work, but they did an experiment with these two children to clean up their rooms and was
rewarded with erasers, and there were only five erasers, so it was impossible to split the erasers
unless you give them both each two erasers and throw out the extra erasers or later give the extra
eraser to one of the children without the other child knowing. Or they would give three to one
child and two to the other child and explain why the child with the most erasers was rewarded
more because that child out of the two did the most work. The children were okay with inequality,
but as long as it was fair. People think because of... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Author, Paul Bloom expressed about other famous people s work, e.g., Harry Frankfurt s
recently published book On Inequality, Frankfurt makes a moral claim, but a psychological remark,
that economic equality has no intrinsic value , and if people take the time to reflect, they ll realize
equality isn t really what s bothering them. . When you compare between the riches and the very
well off, it s proportional because both sides are financially stable while the well off and the
poor would have inequalities. If the whole world was in poverty, it would be equal, but few
would rather live how we are today. Paul Bloom also credits an article titled Americans Want to
Live in a Much More Equal Country (They Just Don t Realize It) written by Dan Ariely. Paul
Bloom quoted Ariely s article, the vast majority of Americans prefer a distribution of wealth more
equal than what exists in Sweden, which is often placed rhetorically at the extreme far left in
terms of political ideology.. . Based on Ariely s articles, people don t want equality, they want
fairness, and to create a perfect society by distributing the nation s wealth. Next, Bloom credits

This scenic walk explores the western fringe of the Howardian Hills. There are superb views
across the Vale of York and Kilburn s White Horse is visible throughout most of the walk.
Coxwold is one of England s most beautiful villages with elegant houses and cottages lining its
broad main street. Notable buildings include: five almshouses, founded in 1662 as a hospital for
ten poor persons; and the Old Hall, a former Grammar School, founded in 1603 by Sir John
Harte from Kilburn, who had been the Lord Mayor of London in 1589. However, the most
prominent building in the village is St Michael s Church with its stately octagonal tower. The
church dates from the fifteenth century and stands unchanged, apart from minor repairs. Inside,
several magnificent memorials pay tribute to the Fauconberg and Belasyse families. The oldest of
these is the altar tomb bearing the date 1603, which shows the recumbent effigies of Sir William
Belasyse and his wife Margaret. The base of the wooden lectern stand has the carving of a mouse,

Personal Narrative Of Pain Is A Funny Thing
Elle McGinnity4 November 2014

Paper #2: Personal Narrative
Pain is a funny thing. Sometimes it strikes suddenly, a lightning strike in a quiet blue sky. It tears
through you and for a few seconds you cannot breathe; cannot think. This was different. This pain
was patient and slow. It crept up on me; starting as just an annoying dull ache in my hip.
Gradually growing confidence, steadily growing until the roar of the pain became so loud, I could
not focus on anything else. But I was stubborn. I told myself I could push through it; that I had to
push through it. Nationals were only two weeks away. I could not afford to lose any time...
I was torn. On one hand, I had hope that maybe if I saw a doctor, they could fix it and ease the
pain. On the other, I was scared. The risk that they would pull me out of dance and not let me
compete at nationals seemed to outweigh the benefits. It was my dance teacher that finally
convinced me to see a doctor.
I remember feeling dazed walking into the hospital; everything was a blur yet seemed to happen in
slow motion. And the smell. It was overwhelming and stale. I was detached, just going through the
motions: walk here, get wristband, sit, stay, wait. The waiting was the worst part. My mind began
to spin. Worrying, and waiting, and contemplating, and waiting and waiting... My fingers began to
restlessly tap, dancing out the rhythm of my steps over and over. I fell into a daze, nothing
processing except

Current Outbreak Of The Ebola Virus
.
What is Ebola? Ebola, also called Hemorrhagic Fever is a rare deadly disease caused by infection
with a strain of ebola virus. This organism causes fever, headache, coughing blood, vomiting
blood, severe bleeding, organ failure, and leads to death. It is spread through body fluids and blood
of someone who is showing ebola symptoms. Ebola can also be spread by hazardous products
(unclean needles or unscreened blood), skin to skin contact, exchanging saliva (kissing, sharing
drinks or food), and making contact with a contaminated surface (doorknob, tissue, etc.).
The most current outbreak of Ebola is in West Africawhich was discovered in March of 2014 and
is considered one of the biggest Ebola outbreaks since Ebola was discovered in 1976. The
countries affected the most by this virus are Liberia, Guinea, and Sierra Leone. These countries
do not have a stable economy which means they cannot afford the tools and technology to study
the virus. In 2014 there were 9,936 Ebola victims but only 4,877 died that year. The virus has an
extremely high risk of death. It kills between 25 and 90 percent of those infected by Ebola.

Difference Between Endothtermic And Exothermic
The goal of this experiment was to preform a series of reactions to determine the change in
temperature that which would conclude whether the chemical reactions were endothermic or
exothermic. The original hypothesis was that each of the reactions, except for the reaction between
solid magnesium and hydrochloric acid, would be endothermic, and the remainder would be
exothermic. This hypothesis was disproven during laboratory experiments to conclude that each of
the reactions were exothermic except for the reaction between water and ammonium chloride which
was endothermic. In Table 1, the heat of solution data collected from ammonium chloride and
sodium carbonate are indicative of how acid base and dissolution reactions yield certain results. The
reaction between ammonium chloride and water is a dissolution reaction in which ammonia and
hydronium is produced from the breaking of ionic bonds in ammonium chloride from the water. In
this reaction, the breaking of ionic bonds in the reactants released more energy than the formation
of new bonds in the products, thus causing a negative temperature change characteristic of an
endothermic reaction. The reaction between sodium carbonate and water was an acid base reaction
in which the water acted as a base to neutralize the acid, sodium carbonate. The energy that was
released in the reactants was less than that absorbed in the products, causing for a positive
temperature change to show an exothermic reaction. The types of reactions

  • 3. The Call Of Cthulhu Or A Portent Of Nuclear Destruction The Call of Cthulhu or a Portent of Nuclear Destruction Howard Phillip Lovecraft died in 1937 nearly a decade before the advent of the atomic bomb and the start of the nuclear age which brought a new sense of fear and paranoia that lasts to this day. Is it possible that within his works of science fiction and horror he, without knowing or realizing it, foresaw the coming of this new terror before it entered the minds of man? Could the titular creature in The Call of Cthulhu be a monstrous personification of nuclear destruction? Is it, that in trying to capture man s fear of the unknown, he actually touched on a fear that man now knows today? Though Lovecraft wrote the story as fiction that he states clearly and often that... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The narrator comments about a small sculpture of the creature Cthulhu as of a form which only a diseased fancy could conceive (Lovecraft 74) It took the brightest minds in America (and Europe) to come up with the Atomic bomb, and though many of them were working for the sheer science of splitting an atom, some were in it to create a weapon to use against the enemies of America and her allies. Upon seeing the destructions of the first nuclear detonation in 1945, Robert Oppenheimer quoted the Hindu Scripture Bhagvad Gita when he said, Now I am become death, destroyer of worlds. This is an often misunderstood quoting, as he was referring to a warrior Prince, Arjuna, who approached his charioteer Krishna, who was actually an avatar of the God Vishnu, for advice on an upcoming battle where many of his friends and family were on the opposing side. • 4. U.s. Senate Armed Services Committee In today s day and age, manufacturers have the capability to collaborate with scientists to create new gear for troops fighting for their country. However, rather than doing that, manufacturers and scientists alike are investing billions of federal dollars in artificial soldiers and machinery. Rather than increasing the physical protection of soldiers in battle conditions, they are frugally wasting money on the possibility of a success in the development of a wartime fighter of artificial intelligence. Meanwhile, troops overseas are being put at risk due to inadequate armor. By fitting our troops with new tactical gear rather than investing in soldiers with artificial intelligence, one can avoid the risk of faulty armor. Sending out... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... An example of one case is when counterfeit transistors were found on a night vision (or FLIR) system used in the Navy s SH 60B helicopters. If those night vision systems were to fail, the Navy has stated that the helicopter would be unable to conduct critical surface warfare missions. With these numbers, the federal government has invested money in agencies that can lend a hand in the decrease of faulty military supplies. One of these agencies is The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), which receives federal funding in order to develop future scientific and technological military gear and devices. They are currently developing a solar powered sensor of unprecedented proportions in their Integrated Sensor Structure program. It s a stratospheric airship that would do persistent wide area surveillance, tracking, and engagement of air and ground targets. There are also plans for a system that neutralized surface to air threats to aircrafts. One risk of artificial intelligence is that machines can malfunction and not know when to stop advancing on the enemy or distinguish between an enemy and a citizen, and not have a risk of unnecessary carnage. Today s modern warfare is high paced, mobile, and technologically advanced. It has been stated that today s sophisticated weapons can malfunction, be too lethal, and their speed and effective range reduces reaction time and decreases the ability to distinguish ... • 5. Impact Of Literary Events On Life Impact of Literary Events on Life Before I talk about how I learn literacy, I want to introduce my mother tongue Chinese, because learning Chinese characters is different from others languages. Chinese characters are logograms, of which we have almost ten thousands Chinese characters in our written language, but only a few thousands in common use. Most Chinese characters are monosyllable. In modern Chinese, characters mainly divided into simplified and traditional, which Wikipedia explains as kinds of characters used in Asian countries and regions: Simplified forms of certain characters are used in mainland China, Singapore, and Malaysia; the corresponding traditional characters are used in Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau, and to a limited extent in South Korea. In my opinion, simplified characters are easy to write, but traditional characters have more sense of beauty. Generally, in art or calligraphy people use traditional characters; in the daily life people use simplified characters. Of course, this only happens in China mainland, because in Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau they only use traditional Chinese. I study Chinese at a very young age, so that I cannot remember how I start to learn it. I think maybe start at some simple characters like, е°Џ(small), 大(big), дєє(people or human), taught to me by my parents. Then I begin to learn the Chinese phonetics, the phonetics like English letter a b c ... except v and add Гј in that. This is why we can use keyboard to input Chinese in ... • 6. Japanese Americans From The 1950s Essay In this paper, the story of the Japanese Americans from the 1940s will be discussed in detail. In addition, the information on how they were put into camps when the United States was attacked by Japanese airplanes in 1942 will be explained. Also, the reaction of Japanese Americans will be presented as well as some of their beliefs about interracial marriages. In the Japanese American film, it explains that the attack of the Japanese s regime against the United Statescaused a war against Japan, but it also affected Japanese who were born in the United States. The film, it also explained how the United States Government violated the rights of thousands of US citizens from Japanese descendants because they were put into camps and treated as enemies due to the fact that the Japanese regime attacked the United States. Thousands of Japanese were put into camps in Manzanar, California. The Japanese Americans were isolated from society. In 1988, Donald Reagan apologized to the Japanese people and gave them monetarily compensation for the injustice they experienced by the American Government during the 1940s. According to the film, the children of those who were put into camps did not know about what had happened until they grown and were asked about the topic of the Japanese camps. The older generation stated that they did not reveal the truth to their children because they did not want to create hate in their children. Also, in the film it is stated that many children from ... • 7. Citizen Kane Meaning Essay The use of lighting in this film was very pretentious and was used to add good aspects to Citizen Kane. The lighting changed based off what the mood corresponded for example, some scenes had a copacetic or pleasant mood. In the beginning, the scene was a very formidable scene. The lighting was dark which portrayed fear towards the audience. The mood was implying fear and almost an alarming mood for the viewers the lighting helped entail this by giving dark, hair raising lighting. The type of lighting they used in this particular scene was not frontal lighting, but actually the exact opposite they used backlighting. Not just the opening scene included lighting that imposed horror to the audience, there were other scenes that used a type of lighting... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The lighting also helped the audience recognize there was a storm occurring which can also help portray fear. Another scene that had great lighting that impacted the story was the party scene . This scene was the scene where people sat around the table, toasting and one man stood up shouting should we take Spain to war? . I noticed that the lighting in the beginning of the scene was darker but as soon as the band hit the first few beats, the lighting grew much brighter, showing the mood of this particular scene was upbeat and happy. This scene was also much brighter (and mood) than the opening scene where the lighting and mood were dark. Overall, the lighting in this film was very well done whether it showed the dark and fearful mood or to portray a storm or something along the lines of that. The lighting also did change throughout the film primarily to correspond the mood if it was supposed to cause fear in viewers, the lighting was darker and made the characters look more sinister like in the scene where Kane held the snow globe while murmuring rose bud...under lighting came into ... In The Stag Hughes seems to comment on man s relationships with nature With reference to The Stag and one other poem in the section discuss the poet s treatment of conflict between man and nature. The Stag was written by a poet named Ted Hughes and is similar to the poem Roe Deer in many respects because they feature many similar ideas. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Ted Hughes expresses part of his feeling as he says pulled aside the camouflage of their terrible planet this tells us that he sympathises with the stag and is disgusted at our behaviour. It is also interesting that the animals who have been brought into are world have also been turned barbaric, such as the hounds which have been taught to hunt the stag for no reason as it does not need to kill it for survival reasons it is just doing it through command of the hunters. The poem also portrays the Stags innocence and helplessness by using phrases such as his limbs all cried different directions to his lungs, which only wanted to rest and doubled back weeping As I said before Roe Deer written by the same poet features a similar encounter between human and wildlife. It shows the lack of communication between nature and us. However, making these assumptions is degrading and unjust. While some women try and object the status quo, others accept it and continue on with their lives. In The Darling by Anton Pavlovich Chekhov, the protagonist Olenka can be seen as a prime example of the perfect women. In Chekhov s short story, a young Russian woman named Olenka marries twice after the death of each husband. The speaker goes on to state that After seeing Olenka to her gate, he said good bye and went on. All day afterwards she heard his sedately dignified voice, and whenever she shut her eyes she saw his dark beard. She liked him very much (Chekov). In these lines it is evident that Olenka was desperate for affection once again, and craved to be desired by someone else. EXERCISE PHYSIOLOGY LAB APK4110L Section # 008 Carissa Insinga 9/22/16 LAB REPORT #2 Resting Metabolic Rate Progressive Submaximal Exercise Test Mike Haischer Introduction In these experiments we talked about the Resting Metabolic Rate and Progressive Submaximal Exercise Testing to determine a subjects carbon dioxide production to oxygen consumption. This was done by having examples provided for us to calculate the RMR by using a formula, (X ml/kg /min x weight in kg) / 1000 mL= # L/min, to determine the number of calories burned at rest, as well having subjects perform the standardized treadmill test for 12 15 minutes for the Progressive Submaximal Exercise Testing. Resting Metabolic Rate is the energy expenditure at rest in well rested, fasted state in a supine position. For an accurate reading of RMR, one should not eat or drink within 6 hours before testing, refrain from any physical activity 12 hours prior, and no caffeine/tobacco/medication consumption beforehand. The purpose of finding RMR is to find the number of kilocalories that are required each day. RMR can be depend on factors such as body composition, genetics, gender, and age. How Did Pirenne Contribute To The Decline Of Civilization Pirenne As a Belgian historian, Henri Pirenne challenged the long held belief that the decline of civilization occurred because of the Germanic invasions in the Roman Empire. Renaissance and Reformation thinkers, Enlightenment philosophers, and Modernist historians all pointed to the Germanic invasions that begin in the fifth century as giving rise to the decline and fall of the Roman Empire. Instead, Pirenne points to the swift and surprising spread of Islam as the reason behind the break with traditional antiquity. Islam cut off trade in the Mediterranean, thus making the Mediterranean Sea and Musulman lake. For the first time in history, the center of life shifted northward from the Mediterranean. Pierenne states that although there was a flood of Germanic immigration to the Roman Empire, the invaders were simply absorbed into the Empire. The German language died away. The Gothic conception of royalty was lost. All Germanic law was crushed and the organization of the judiciary was entirely Roman. In Spain and Gaul, the Germanic character was modified by Roman manners and Roman institutions. In the Empire, royal insignia went from Germanic to Roman. • 31. The Rule Of The King After the failure of the Judges, Israel desired a king, so they could be like all other nations. (1Sam 5:8 paraphrased) Creating a United Monarchy meant many changes would have to take place. At the time Israel had been theocracy and God was their King, however the elders had a different plan. They wanted a king, even if it meant rejecting God. God told Samuel to listen to the people, appoint them a king, but make sure they understand what the king who reigns over them will do Samuel explained to the people that their sons would be part of the army, their children would have to work for the king, they also would have to pay high taxes. The people refused to listen to Samuel. So God gave them a king. The LORD replied, Do as they say, and give them a king. (1 Sam 8:22 NLT) Then Samuel agreed and sent the people home. God was rejected and a human monarchy would now rule Israel. Unknown to the people God had chosen a man to serve as their king. (1Sam 9:16 17 paraphrased) According to Hindson and Yates Saulwas the people s choice, more than God s choice for a king. They focused on his outward appearance more than his heart. Tall, dark, and handsome, Saul was the chosen one the appointed king. According to Hindson and Yates Despite Saul s strong beginning (chap. 11) and being warned by Samuel to honor the Mosaic covenant (chap.12), Saul s poor choices caused his kingdom to deteriorate rapidly. With the pressure we had been under now somewhat abated, we awoke the next morning rested and refreshed, ready for whatever the day might bring. Stapleya and Wisceya were eager to see the wonders of Las Vegas. Estelle and Jill had told them enough to pique their curiosity, although the fur girls insisted it was impossible and we must be kidding them. Compared to their home world, I am sure our entire planet seemed like an impossibility, so why they would balk at one more impossible thing, I could not say. We pulled out of the motel parking lot before dawn and drove straight down Interstate 15 without stopping except to buy fuel or to answer nature s call. Although we had eschewed Interstate highways in prior day s travels, we really had no choice now. Besides, we had no reason to suspect Alex would be looking for us here. Passing through the St. George area, Estelle remarked on the nuclear contamination in the area from the atomic bomb testing, and the many diverse cases of cancer in the people living here then. Our extraterrestrial visitors became curious as to those events which led us into a long discussion of warfare on Earth and the horrors it had brought, and the worries and politics of Nuclear power. There are four key arguments, which also translate into philosophical concerns, associated with euthanasia. The first is a person s right to decide about his or her own life. People take for granted the life affecting choices they make on a daily basis, what career path to follow, when to marry, and when to have children just to name a few. The decision of when to die, without legal intervention, should also be considered as one of these natural rights. The second philosophical concern is that denying terminally ill patients the natural right to die is unfair and cruel. This point goes hand in hand with the subject of ordinary versus extraordinary treatment. A terminally ill patient has and will continue to have the right to prolong their life by means of ordinary treatment such as medicines and surgeries that do not involve excessive pain, expense, etc. When it becomes impossible for a person to continue living by means of ordinary treatment they are next given the choice to sustain their life by means of extraordinary treatment or they are given the option of refusing treatment. Women have always been seen as domestic or the care takers of the family; women stay home with the kids, tend to dinner and the cleaning. That being said whenever a woman, like Jane, tries to step out of the nurturing role, men tend to feel intimidated and was unsure how to react to such a thing happening (like when John and Jane s brother diagnose her to be mentally ill all because she desires to write). In the time of the story, Jane is seen as mentally ill because she desires to read and write while her husband who happens to be a physician of high standing says she tends to have slightly hysterical tendency(Page 1, paragraph 5). In The Yellow Wallpaper Gilman uses the yellow wallpaper to symbolize Jane, who represents the way women use to be treated as the lesser in society. In the time this story was written, back in 1899, men and women were not viewed as equals and this short story is a prime example. As the readers go through the story they can literally see the shifts in her sanity by her illness and the almost revolting yellow wallpaper, which represents all the women who in that time period were overlooked by the men in society. The Author, Paul Bloom expressed about other famous people s work, e.g., Harry Frankfurt s recently published book On Inequality, Frankfurt makes a moral claim, but a psychological remark, that economic equality has no intrinsic value , and if people take the time to reflect, they ll realize equality isn t really what s bothering them. . When you compare between the riches and the very well off, it s proportional because both sides are financially stable while the well off and the poor would have inequalities. If the whole world was in poverty, it would be equal, but few would rather live how we are today. Paul Bloom also credits an article titled Americans Want to Live in a Much More Equal Country (They Just Don t Realize It) written by Dan Ariely. Paul Bloom quoted Ariely s article, the vast majority of Americans prefer a distribution of wealth more equal than what exists in Sweden, which is often placed rhetorically at the extreme far left in terms of political ideology.. . Based on Ariely s articles, people don t want equality, they want fairness, and to create a perfect society by distributing the nation s wealth. Next, Bloom credits Christopher ... • 53. Coxwold Research Paper This scenic walk explores the western fringe of the Howardian Hills. There are superb views across the Vale of York and Kilburn s White Horse is visible throughout most of the walk. Coxwold is one of England s most beautiful villages with elegant houses and cottages lining its broad main street. Notable buildings include: five almshouses, founded in 1662 as a hospital for ten poor persons; and the Old Hall, a former Grammar School, founded in 1603 by Sir John Harte from Kilburn, who had been the Lord Mayor of London in 1589. However, the most prominent building in the village is St Michael s Church with its stately octagonal tower. The church dates from the fifteenth century and stands unchanged, apart from minor repairs. Inside, several magnificent memorials pay tribute to the Fauconberg and Belasyse families. The oldest of these is the altar tomb bearing the date 1603, which shows the recumbent effigies of Sir William Belasyse and his wife Margaret. The base of the wooden lectern stand has the carving of a mouse, the trademark of renowned woodcarver Robert Thompson, the Mouseman of Kilburn . At the top of the village stands Shandy Hall, former home of the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Large gardens with productive orchards of apple, pear and plum trees became part of the village economy. In addition, selling of the fruit crop provided a sizeable income and often paid a tenants rent for the full year. Evidently, Husthwaite supplied fruit to the Whitby whaling fleet and the boat owners presented some whale jawbones to the village in the 1800s, which once formed an arch across the Malton road. By the late 1960s, many of the existing orchards had disappeared, leaving very little evidence of the village s heritage. Nevertheless, in 2009 a project started by the village history society saw a revival in commercial growing to fund a variety of projects within the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 54. Personal Narrative Of Pain Is A Funny Thing Elle McGinnity4 November 2014 Mrs. SiragusaPeriod 2AC Paper #2: Personal Narrative Pain is a funny thing. Sometimes it strikes suddenly, a lightning strike in a quiet blue sky. It tears through you and for a few seconds you cannot breathe; cannot think. This was different. This pain was patient and slow. It crept up on me; starting as just an annoying dull ache in my hip. Gradually growing confidence, steadily growing until the roar of the pain became so loud, I could not focus on anything else. But I was stubborn. I told myself I could push through it; that I had to push through it. Nationals were only two weeks away. I could not afford to lose any time... I was torn. On one hand, I had hope that maybe if I saw a doctor, they could fix it and ease the pain. On the other, I was scared. The risk that they would pull me out of dance and not let me compete at nationals seemed to outweigh the benefits. It was my dance teacher that finally convinced me to see a doctor. I remember feeling dazed walking into the hospital; everything was a blur yet seemed to happen in slow motion. And the smell. It was overwhelming and stale. I was detached, just going through the motions: walk here, get wristband, sit, stay, wait. The waiting was the worst part. My mind began to spin. Worrying, and waiting, and contemplating, and waiting and waiting... My fingers began to restlessly tap, dancing out the rhythm of my steps over and over. I fell into a daze, nothing processing except ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 55. Current Outbreak Of The Ebola Virus . What is Ebola? Ebola, also called Hemorrhagic Fever is a rare deadly disease caused by infection with a strain of ebola virus. This organism causes fever, headache, coughing blood, vomiting blood, severe bleeding, organ failure, and leads to death. It is spread through body fluids and blood of someone who is showing ebola symptoms. Ebola can also be spread by hazardous products (unclean needles or unscreened blood), skin to skin contact, exchanging saliva (kissing, sharing drinks or food), and making contact with a contaminated surface (doorknob, tissue, etc.). The most current outbreak of Ebola is in West Africawhich was discovered in March of 2014 and is considered one of the biggest Ebola outbreaks since Ebola was discovered in 1976. The countries affected the most by this virus are Liberia, Guinea, and Sierra Leone. These countries do not have a stable economy which means they cannot afford the tools and technology to study the virus. In 2014 there were 9,936 Ebola victims but only 4,877 died that year. The virus has an extremely high risk of death. It kills between 25 and 90 percent of those infected by Ebola. Recovery from Ebola usually depends on care and the patient s immune system s response to the treatment. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 56. Difference Between Endothtermic And Exothermic The goal of this experiment was to preform a series of reactions to determine the change in temperature that which would conclude whether the chemical reactions were endothermic or exothermic. The original hypothesis was that each of the reactions, except for the reaction between solid magnesium and hydrochloric acid, would be endothermic, and the remainder would be exothermic. This hypothesis was disproven during laboratory experiments to conclude that each of the reactions were exothermic except for the reaction between water and ammonium chloride which was endothermic. In Table 1, the heat of solution data collected from ammonium chloride and sodium carbonate are indicative of how acid base and dissolution reactions yield certain results. The reaction between ammonium chloride and water is a dissolution reaction in which ammonia and hydronium is produced from the breaking of ionic bonds in ammonium chloride from the water. In this reaction, the breaking of ionic bonds in the reactants released more energy than the formation of new bonds in the products, thus causing a negative temperature change characteristic of an endothermic reaction. The reaction between sodium carbonate and water was an acid base reaction in which the water acted as a base to neutralize the acid, sodium carbonate. The energy that was released in the reactants was less than that absorbed in the products, causing for a positive temperature change to show an exothermic reaction. The types of reactions ...
