Universal Design for Learning
(UDL)

What is Universal Design for Learning ?
Def:
Universal Design for Learning is a methodical planning of lesson with learning
needs and interests of all the learners in minds . UDL ensure lesson is presented
in forms which individually engage students and provide them with opportunities to
express themselves .
Goals of UDL
➢Break down barriers that make it difficult for learners to engage and express
themselves during learning .
➢provide a learning environment where every students strive and feel valued .
➢Use student’s prior knowledge and background as a strength and not
weakness.
➢Provide a learner with motivation to be a life-long learner .
UDL Principles
Are aspects of the UDL which answer what, how and why ; they provide a
road map for implementation of the UDL goals.
UDL (online learner)
Multiple Representations of the Content : an instructor needs to present contents
to his students using multiples instructional techniques meet individual learnings .
For examples :
● Use of videos, colorful powerpoints for visual learners.
● Use of large print for visually impaired .
● Use of interactive applications for hands-on learners .
Multiple Expressions : learners are unique and so are how they express their
ideas and thoughts . Instructor could incorporate techniques such as writing ,and
creating powerpoint, poster , and video .
Multiple Engagements:
Instructors could engage students in learning by :
● Creating safe learning environment
● Building contents through students’ interests and backgrounds.
● Grouping students by abilities .
● providing scaffolding activities .
The essent of UDL is captured by this quote :
A positive learning climate in a school for young children is a composite of many things. It is an
attitude that respects children. It is a place where children receive guidance and encouragement from
the responsible adults around them. It is an environment where children can experiment and try out
new ideas without fear or failure. It is an atmosphere that builds children’s self-confidence so they
dare to take risks. It is an environment that nurtures a love of learning.

  • 2. What is Universal Design for Learning ? Def: Universal Design for Learning is a methodical planning of lesson with learning needs and interests of all the learners in minds . UDL ensure lesson is presented in forms which individually engage students and provide them with opportunities to express themselves .
  • 3. Goals of UDL ➢Break down barriers that make it difficult for learners to engage and express themselves during learning . ➢provide a learning environment where every students strive and feel valued . ➢Use student’s prior knowledge and background as a strength and not weakness. ➢Provide a learner with motivation to be a life-long learner .
  • 4. UDL Principles Are aspects of the UDL which answer what, how and why ; they provide a road map for implementation of the UDL goals.
  • 5. UDL (online learner) Multiple Representations of the Content : an instructor needs to present contents to his students using multiples instructional techniques meet individual learnings . For examples : ● Use of videos, colorful powerpoints for visual learners. ● Use of large print for visually impaired . ● Use of interactive applications for hands-on learners . Multiple Expressions : learners are unique and so are how they express their ideas and thoughts . Instructor could incorporate techniques such as writing ,and creating powerpoint, poster , and video . Multiple Engagements: Instructors could engage students in learning by : ● Creating safe learning environment ● Building contents through students’ interests and backgrounds. ● Grouping students by abilities . ● providing scaffolding activities .
  • 6. The essent of UDL is captured by this quote : A positive learning climate in a school for young children is a composite of many things. It is an attitude that respects children. It is a place where children receive guidance and encouragement from the responsible adults around them. It is an environment where children can experiment and try out new ideas without fear or failure. It is an atmosphere that builds children’s self-confidence so they dare to take risks.
