What is
Leadership?
Leadership is an influence relationship among leaders and
followers who intend real changes and reflect their mutual
purpose.
Being a leader means defining and exhibiting moral and ethical
courage and setting an example for everyone.
Leadership skills are an essential component in positioning
executives to make thoughtful decisions about their organization's
mission and goals, and properly allocate resources to achieve those
directives. Leadership skills are an essential component in
positioning executives to make thoughtful decisions about their
organization's mission and goals, and properly allocate resources
to achieve those directives.
Leadership
Qualities
• Confidence To be an effective leader, you should be
confident enough to ensure that other follow your
commands. As a leader, you have to be oozing with
confidence, show some swagger and assertiveness to gain the
respect of your subordinates.
• Inspire Others Probably the most difficult job for a leader is
to persuade others to follow. It can only be possible if you
inspire your followers by setting a good example. As a leader,
should think positive and this positive approach should be
visible through your actions.
• Good Communicator Until you clearly communicate your
vision to your team and tell them the strategy to achieve the
goal, it will be very difficult for you to get the results you
want.
• Decision-Making Capabilities Apart from having a
futuristic vision, a leader should have the ability to take the
right decision at the right time. A leader should think long and
hard before taking a decision but once the decision is taken,
stand by it.
• Creativity and Innovation In order to get ahead in today’s
fast-paced world, a leader must be creative and innovative at
the same time. Creative thinking and innovation is what
makes you and your team stand out from the crowd.
• Fair is what people want. Good leaders don’t have favourites
in the team. They reward for results not partiality; they
promise fairness.
• Appreciative A wise leader values their team and the
person. Success is only achieved with the help of others.
What’s more, genuine appreciation provides encouragement,
develops confidence, and builds on strengths.
• Responsive Good leaders are responsive to the needs of
those they lead. They adjust their behaviour to best match
the situation. They listen to their team; they value their team.
Types Of
Leadership
• Authentic Leadership It is an approach to leadership that
emphasizes building the leader’s legitimacy through honest
relationships with followers which value their input and are
built on an ethical foundation. Generally, authentic leaders are
positive people with truthful self-concepts who promote
openness.
• Autocratic Leadership Autocratic leadership is a
management style wherein one person controls all the
decisions and takes very little inputs from other group
members. Autocratic leaders make choices or decisions based
on their own beliefs and do not involve others for their
suggestion or advice. This type of leadership style is seen
mostly in businesses which are relatively small with fewer
employees.
• Laissez-Faire Leadership is a style is where all the rights
and power to make decisions is fully given to the worker. This
was first described by Lewin, Lippitt and White in 1939, along
with the autocratic leadership and the democratic leadership
styles. Laissez-faire leaders allow followers to have complete
freedom to make decisions concerning the completion of
their work. It allows followers a self-rule, while at the same
time offering guidance and support when requested.
• Transformational Leadership is defined as a leadership
approach that causes change in individuals and social systems.
In its ideal form, it creates valuable and positive change in the
followers with the end goal of developing followers into
leaders. The process of transformational leadership aims at
influencing changes in attitudes and assumptions held by
organizational members and building commitment for
organizational goals and objectives.
• Transactional Leadership is a part of a style
of leadership that focuses on supervision, organization,
and performance. It is a style of leadership in which leaders
promote compliance by followers through both rewards and
punishments. Leaders using transactional leadership as a
model pay attention to followers work in order to find faults
and deviations. This type of leadership is effective in crisis and
emergency situations as well as for projects that need to be
carried out in a specific way.
• Bureaucratic Leadership This type of leadership is based
on the official duties that are to be looked upon staying under
a chain of authority. The leader has to apply a full system of
rules both for decision making as well as for the
management. This type of leadership leaves no space to
explore new ways to solve issues and in fact work by book.
This type of leadership is normally followed in hospitals,
universities, banks and government organizations to reduce
corruption and increase security.
• Charismatic Leadership is visionary and works by infusing
high amount of energy and enthusiasm in his team. He sets as
role model for his team and drive others to show high level of
performance. This type of leader is committed to the
organization and believes more in him rather than his team.
The presence of charismatic leader works as a boost for rest
of the employees and therefore such type of leader should be
committed to the organization for the long run.
• Participative Leadership This is among the styles of
leadership , focuses on the involvement of members of the
group while making decision. Participative leadership is more
of a participative form of leadership. This type of leadership
can be applied to different types of organization. Schools and
government can be good examples of this type of leadership.
The whole group gets to participate in the leadership but the
leader is required to listen to every member and also choose
who gets to be in the group.
• Directive Leadership provides guidance about what
should be done and how to do it, scheduling work, and
maintaining standers of performance. Thus, it may be inferred
that directive leadership is effective as the subordinators has
an external locus of Control, lacks experience, has a high need
for clarity or a low need of achievement. Also, when the task
is unstructured, or there is conflict between work groups, a
more directive style would be useful.
• Supportive Leadership show concern for the needs of the
employees, leader is friendly and approachable. Supportive
Leadership would be more suitable for highly structured tasks,
under bureaucratic and formal authority relationship.
In supportive Leadership, leader support to their subordinates
officially and some time personally also. Leader always try to
fulfill their requirements, it boost employees moral also.
• Achievement Oriented Leadership encourage
employees to perform at their highest level by setting
challenging goals, emphasizing excellence and demonstrating
confidence in employees abilities. Achievement Oriented
Leadership is largely suitable for unstructured tasks, where
the subordinate need for achievement is high.
Conclusion
Leadership is basically the ability of an individual to
take challenges and decisions in order to achieve the
goal of the organization. However, a good leader
does not blame his employees rather learns from
mistakes and motivates their employees and
subordinates not to repeat the same mistake again.
These leadership styles are followed by most leaders
in the world.
