Mainframe
   This is a computer
                   system that is smaller
                   and less expensive
                   than a mainframe but
                   still can be used by
                   many users.
                  Larger businesses use
                   them.




Minicomputer
   They are smaller in
                    size and cost much
                    less then mainframes
                    and minicomputers.
                   A desktop computer
                    system is found in
                    schools, homes, librari
                    es, and small
                    businesses.




Microcomputer
   A portable computer
             with an integrated
             keyboard and pointing
             device.
            Can run regular
             desktop software, but
             in a smaller package.




Laptop
   A portable computer
             that lets the user enter
             input through a
             touchscreen, usually
             with a finger.
            Early models were
             laptops with screens
             that could be written
             on with a stylus.




Tablet
   A small portable
               computer that lets the
               user enter input
               through a
               touchscreen, usually
               with a finger.
              Early models were
               PDAs with screens
               that could be written
               on with a stylus.
               Current examples
               include iPod Touch
Handheld       and smartphones
   A network is a group of connected computers
    that allow people to share information and
    equipment.
    ◦ A Local Area Network (LAN) is a network where the
      computers are all located in the same building or
      buildings nearby.
    ◦ A Wide Area Network (WAN) has computers that are
      located in different buildings that are spread out from
      each other.




Network
   A computer or device on a network that
    manages network resources.
    ◦ A network server is a computer that manages network
      traffic.
    ◦ A file server is a computer and storage device
      dedicated to storing files – any user on the network
      can store files.
    ◦ A printer server is a computer that manages one or
      more printers.
   FYI: People who operate server computers are
    called administrators.

Server
 A computer on a network that requests
  access to network resources like files and
  printing.
 People that use client computers are
  called users.
