This document summarizes a study that investigated the effects of intensive blood glucose control versus standard control in patients over age 55 with type 2 diabetes. Over 5 years of follow up, intensive control reduced the risk of major macrovascular and microvascular events by 10% compared to standard control. Intensive control also significantly reduced new or worsening nephropathy and new-onset microalbuminuria. However, it increased the risk of severe and minor hypoglycemia. The study found no difference in all-cause or cardiovascular mortality between the intensive and standard control groups.
