2. The Twin Towers, from the Ground Up
• The Construction of the Twin Towers started
on August 5th, 1966, when crew had to
excavate , or dig up, 6 stories of dirt. In all they
there was 65 feet, of tower that most people
never got a chance to see. With an
accumulative 1 million cubic yards dug up, the
construction process was just beginning.
3. The Minds Behind This Operation
• The structure of the Twin Towers was
designed mostly by Minuru Yamasaki. His
design used tubes as the foundation of the
colossal towers. It’s a little bit like you or I
being held up by a collection of straws. The
North Tower was completed in December,
1972; and the South Tower was completed in
July 1973. 400 million dollars,2.3 billion in
today’s money, the Twin Towers were
completed.
4. High Above
• The Twin Towers were the tallest building in
the world when they were built, standing a
massive 1350 feet. The design of the
foundation of the Twin Towers, using a
reinforced perimeter wall around a column
took much of the wind force and weight of the
building, but the height of the towers made it
sway up to 3 feet in either direction. Can you
imagine trying to eat on the top floor swaying
6 feet back and forth?
5. Interesting Facts
• The dirt dug up from the Twin Towers later
became Battery Park City.
• Although 9-11 is the most commonly known
attack on the world trade center, it was not
the first time it had happened. It was
previously robbed, set on fire, and bombed.
