 The water is very important for the life.
Waste water containts germs and
particles and it can be mortal for the
humans.
 It’s important that the waste water will
become in drinking water

B. Disinfection
 Our objectives are:
 Transform the waste water to drinking
water.

 Spatula
 Beaker
 Scissors
 Work area
 Bottle (0,5L and 1,5L)
 Filter paper
 Glass watch
 Reagents:
 Alum
 Bleach
 Tap Water
 Waste water sample
 Fine sand
 Coarse sand
 Pebbles
 Chlorine test strip
 Funnel
 Dropper
 Rubber band

 1.           First, make a equipment filter
with a bottle and a paper filter. Add
sand and boulders and wash the filter
adding 1L of tap water.
2.           Pour the waste water in a 1,5L
bottle and shake de bottle 10 times for
30 seconds. This process is called
aeration.
3.           Add two spoons of alum and
remove during 5 minutes. Wait 20
minutes and target appearance every
5 minutes.
 4. One week later, add two-thirds of
treated water in the filter.
 5. Add drops of bleach and check the
free available chlorine with the chlorine
test strip. Stop when the number is 3.
 6. Wait 10 minutes and check other time.
 7. Add more drops other time and check
the free available chlorine. When the
number is 3, you have finish the
experiment.

1-Compare the treated and untreated water. Has treatment changed the
appearance and smell of the water?

Yes, the untreatment water is murky and the particles are in the water. The
tracted water isn’t murky and there aren’t particles on the water.

2-Do you think your clarified water is safe to drink? Give a reason for your answer.

No. Because is not safe to drink, because there are from particles and foam.

3-Do you think your filtered and disinfected water is safe to drink? Give a reason
with your answer.

No, there aren’t particles and foam, but isn’t safe for drink.
