2. To change something, build a new model
that makes the existing model
obsolete.”
― AR. BUCKMINISTER FULLER
3.
4. Early life
• born in 1927 in the US.
• He was
• American Architect,
• author,
• designer,
• and inventor.
• studied at Milton Academy in Massachusetts
and then at Harvard University
5. Early life
• he did not limit himself for one field
• He worked To solve global problems
surrounding
• housing,
• shelter,
• transportation,
• education,
• energy,
•ecological destruction,
and
• poverty.
6. Early life
• Buckminster Fuller had an interest in a
number of fields
• Architecture
• Design
• Geometry
• Engineering
• Science
• Cartography (maps)
7. early life
• The word Dymaxion was a word he coined
for his work.
Dymaxion house
•The word is a
combination of the
words dynamic,
maximum, and
tension
8. Design principles
• Focused around being more efficient and
lower cost
• Ephemeralization which translates to doing
more with less
12. What is a geodesic
dome…..?
• It is a type of structure shaped like a piece of a
sphere or a ball.
• This structure is comprised of a complex network of
triangles that form a roughly spherical surface
• The more complex the
network of triangles
the more closely the
dome approximates
the shape of a true
sphere
13. geodesic dome used for….
• A geodesic dome is a portion of
a geodesic sphere.
• Buildings or roofs have been constructed out
of geodesic domes .
• Geodesic domes
are efficient
structures in
several ways
14. geodesic dome
• based on the concept –
doing more with less
• If a spherical structure was
created from triangles, the
sphere would have
unparalleled strength
• “Doing more with less” states
that…… the largest volume
of the interior space has the
least amount of surface area
• Therefore saving materials
and cost
15. geodesic dome
• the shape of the dome
is most efficient interior
atmosphere for human
dwelling.
• This is because the air
and the energy
allowed to circulate
without obstruction
• leading to natural
heating And cooling of
the structure.
17. Dymaxion house
• The Dymaxion House was
developed by inventor and
architect BUCKMINISTER FULLER
• completed in 1930 after
• Buckminster Fuller wanted to
mass-produce a bathroom and a
house.
• design of the Dymaxion house
used a central vertical stainless-
steel strut on a single foundation.
•The Dymaxion house
represented the first
conscious effort to build
an autonomous
buildings in the 20th
century.
18. Dymaxion house
• It was a prototype proposed to use a
1. packaging toilet,
2. water storage and
3. a convection-driven ventilator built
into the roof.
• It was designed for the stormy areas of
the world: temperate oceanic islands,
and the Great Plains of North America.
• The Dymaxion house was intended to
reduce water use by
a greywater system, a packaging
commode, and a "fogger" to replace
showers
20. Dymaxion car
•
Designer: Bucky Fuller
• Also called: 4D Transport
• Engine: Ford flathead V8
• Body style: Sheet aluminum on
ash frame
• The Dymaxion car was designed
by BUCKMINISTER FULLER
• The Dymaxion's aerodynamic
bodywork was designed for
increased fuel efficiency and top
speed
•a vehicle that could go
anywhere.
•the Dymaxion would
ultimately have "wheels for
ground travel and jet stilts for
instant takeoff and flight."
21. Dymaxion car
• Estimating that designing a land-sea-air vehicle was then
financially and technically out of reach, Fuller focused on the
most dangerous and challenging mode of such vehicle:
landing and taxiing on hard ground.
• Fuller noted severe limitations in its handling, especially at
high speed or in high wind
• The limited understanding of the effects— allowing only
trained staff to drive the car
22. Dymaxion map
• The Dymaxion map or Fuller map is a
projection of a world map onto the
surface of an icosahedron (polyhedron),
• which can be unfolded and flattened to
two dimensions.
• The flat map is heavily interrupted in
order to preserve shapes and sizes
• The projection was invented by
• a flat map, with which the world may be
fitted together and rearranged to
illuminate special aspects of its
geography
23. Dymaxion map
• The Dymaxion projection is intended only for representations
of the entire globe
• Fuller claimed that his map had several advantages over
other projections for world maps
• It has less distortion of relative size of areas,
• and less distortion of shapes of areas,
• More unusually, the Dymaxion map does not have any "right
way up". Fuller argued that in the universe there is no "up"
and "down", or "north" and "south": only "in" and "out”.
Gravitational forces of the stars and planets created "in",
meaning "towards the gravitational center", and "out",
meaning "away from the gravitational center".
24. Fuller wanted to improve society
• It seems perfectly clear that when there is enough to go
around man will not fight any more than he now fights for
air. When man is successful in doing so much more with
so much less he can take care of everybody at a higher
standard.”
