Do you have what it takes to be a leader? What have you done that makes you one?
There are many different definitions of leader, but what does it truly mean to be one?
Dictionary.com defines leader as “a person who guides or directs a group” and co-
founder of Apple, Steve Jobs said, "Innovation distinguishes between a leader and a
follower." It’s up to a persons’ own idea about what a leader is. Throughout the
Leadership Summit 2013 class I was able to more clearly define what being a leader
means to me. After listening to a wide variety of successful leaders, I learned there are
many types of leaders; not just one particular mold. My own definition is as follows,
A leader is a determined individual who can deal with adversity
in such a way that other people look to them for guidance and
direction. A good leader will encourage and help others to achieve
their own goals for the benefit of society.
I strive to be this type of leader everyday. I have the resources, I have the skills and I will
never stop trying to reach this goal. I have the potential to lead people and help others
achieve a more fulfilling life. This portfolio contains the hard work and amazing
experiences that I was able to partake in during this class. It is a description of myself as a
person, my past, present and future. It explains who I am beyond my schoolwork and
extracurricular activities. This portfolio is a glimpse at the leader inside of me. I hope
you are inspired as I was during this class. Enjoy!
Sincerely,
Nicole Ludwig

Background: My Consulting group, APEX, had the pleasure of speaking with Mr.
Jonathan Gandhi. He is a businessman who is in the process of building a hotel. He
admitted to having trouble gaining the respect from the older members in his team. He
asked us to come up with some possible solutions and present them to him in person.
Who: Mr. Jonathan Gandhi
What: Sustainable Leadership
Where: Denver, Colorado
When: May 6, 2013
Why: To suggest solutions for current difficulties, due to young age, and how to
become an established leader
Advice: Form genuine lasting relationships, over communicate rather than under
communicate, make sure conflict is constructive, set up routine meetings with team
members, show commitment

Servant Leadership:
Servant leadership is based on authority over power. A leader will use this
authority to benefit the people around him or her. Since the leader values
contributions from employees, creativity and growth can flourish. A
servant leader may appear to lack authority. As a result, performance may
suffer.
Task Oriented Leadership:
This form of leadership is defined by task completion and deadlines. Easy
to follow rules laid out by leaders lets employees know how to complete
their task with precision. This type of leadership can lead to low morale in
employees. They may not feel like they are important or part of a team.
LeadershipTheories: 1
2
9
People Related/Oriented Leadership:
People related leadership focuses on working in groups to complete tasks.
Relations oriented leadership encourages personal interaction between
employees and customers. They want to do what is best for the group, so
they are glad to help wherever it is needed. People oriented leaders may put
the growth of the team before the productivity of the company. Tasks may
not always be completed in a timely and effective manner.
Transformational Leadership:
Transformational leadership focuses on morality and motivation. These
leaders attempt to appeal to their follower’s values. Everyone in the group
expects the best from everyone else. This leads to high productivity and
participation from team members. Because they are so focused on the big
picture, leaders can let the little details that pull everything together slide.
LeadershipTheories:
4
3
10
Laissez- Faire Leadership:
The main characteristic of laissez- faire leadership is very little guidance to
followers. The general belief is that when people are left alone they are able
to come up with and carry out tasks that they would not normally be able
to under the direct supervision of a commanding leader. This form of
leadership can lead to low productivity in the company.
Bureaucratic Leadership:
The key element to bureaucratic leadership is following the rules. They try
to solve their problems with the power that comes from control and the
orderly flow of information. This type of leadership does not easily foster
creativity and growth. It may not be efficient for teams that depend on
innovation.
LeadershipTheories:
5
6
11
Democratic Leadership:
Democratic Leadership is based on the free- flow of ideas. This type of
leadership allows every person an opportunity to voice his or her opinions.
Companies involved in advertising and design, who need to be creative, use
this type of leadership to find new concepts and designs. Group members
may feel alienated if their ideas are not greeted with praise
Autocratic Leadership:
Individual power and next to little input from group members
characterizes autocratic leadership. The leader has total control over all
decisions being made. Efficiency is one of the highest advantages. Power
derived from autocratic leadership is sometimes abused. In this case a
leader may come across as bossy, controlling and dictatorial.
LeadershipTheories: 7
8
12
Transactional Leadership:
Transactional leadership is based on the idea that people are motivated by
rewards. This type of leadership can be very effective because it motivates
employees to perform to their highest ability and efficiency. Unfortunately,
employees may be left feeling replaceable because another worker could be
hired easily.
Charismatic Leadership:
Charismatic leadership is characterized by using charisma to influence
people to follow. A good leader can use ethics to transform people they
lead. Mahatma Gandhi used charismatic leadership to help the world.
Charismatic leaders’ intentions are not always good, for example Adolf
Hitler

WhoAmI:
14
I am a very independent worker. I get tasks done efficiently on my own time. I
make sure that I am proud of everything I do. Doing badly motivates me to
work even harder.
Even though social networking works as a way to communicate the best way is
still face-to-face. I do not like when people try to talk about difficult issues over
text. It creates confusion and even more stress.
Usually people can help me just by being understanding. I try to do a lot and
sometimes I get stressed with everything I put on my plate. I try to be
understanding of other people and believe them when they say they are
extremely busy.
I make decisions after I have carefully evaluate different information. It is
important to weigh all the facts to pick the most efficient and effective solution.
Although I try to think in depth, sometimes I don’t. I do make bad decisions,
but I always make sure I recognize my mistakes.

15
When I am stressed, I tend to take out my frustration on other people, which is
something I need to work on. I usually like people to approach me. I like
sharing ideas and helping others.
I value hard work and communication. If other people are working hard then I
really value their input and hard work. If someone is not adding to the group
it’s hard for me to appreciate that person. I also value honesty and integrity.
Staying true to myself, even when times get stressful is difficult. I strive to be
the best person I can.
I will not tolerate people who are lazy. Of course I love to have fun, but after I
have done what I need to do. I do not tolerate judgment. Everyone should be
given the same opportunity to talk in the group. We need to treat each other
with respect in order to be successful.

GOAL:
To become a more well-rounded,
knowledgeable, and accepting person as
a result of my one-month trip to Europe
this summer and to successfully plan and
execute an inspiring trip with my best
friend.
Hobby:Traveling Traveling gives me an
opportunity to see how
the rest of the world
lives. It opens my eyes
to new ideas and
experiences. I have had
the privilege to leave
the United States
many times. I feel like
I am a less naïve
person because of it.
17
Excellence
Perfection is an accomplishment I will never stop trying
to reach. Trying to deliver top-notch work is incredibly
important me. I will strive to present myself in a
professional and knowledge manner to gain respect and
others’ confidence. I will perform to the best of my ability and be proud of the work I
have done.
Team Work
Working in a team will take place throughout the rest of my life. I will strive to always be
helpful and patient with others. I will not judge others but I will listen to their opinions. I
will be present and available to work or try my best to be present. At meetings I will be
physically, emotionally, and mentally available to discuss ideas. I will be predictable,
allowing others rely on me. I will be kind and caring to members in my group. I will
show my interest in their personal lives to enhance the connection between the group
members.
Honesty
I promise to be honest with everyone in my life. I will not avoid the truth but try to
present it in a manner that will be least upsetting. I will try to be honest about how I feel
about others ideas without causing conflict. I will be honest because I would want others
to be honest with me.
CodeofEthics:
18
Integrity
I will maintain my integrity by not cheating or taking the easy way out of situations. I
will gain respect and trust this way. I will put in the effort it takes to accomplish a task
ethically and responsibly. I will hold myself to high standards and achieve success
through hard work and dedication.
Commitment
If I say I am going to do something and I give my word I will do everything I can to make
sure I do what I said I would do. I will not back out of plans when people are expecting
me to be there. I will not neglect work when others are expecting me to complete a task.
Sincerity
I promise to always be genuine and honest with others. I will present myself for who I
am. I will act the same when I am with others, as I will when I am alone. I will be true to
myself and be confident in my skills and abilities. I will help people out of the goodness
of my heart, not because I expect something in return.
I, Nicole Ludwig, assume the full responsibilities of this
Code of Ethics.

China and Leadership
Background: Bob moved to China when it was still relatively undiscovered. He began a
restaurant chain that has turned into an extremely successful business.
His Inspiration: Learning and knowledge
My Inspiration: His curiosity and strength to move to a foreign country, his desire to
succeed after the closing of his first restaurant and the way he adapted to
the Asian culture.
Mistakes: Bob ran into many road bumps along the way, but he said one of his
biggest mistakes was not taking good advice that others offered.
Change: I will try to take more risks.

Real Deal
In my Leadership Summit class, I had the privilege of listening to Dr. Jeff Thompson, the co-
developer or the Adversity Quotient. Dr. Thompson brought a gift for every student in the
class. This gift was a “Real Deal” deck of cards. They were not just cards though. On every card
there was a word. We were asked to pull out five cards with words we most valued. So many of
the words were values that I believe in. I was forced to really evaluate what I believe in. The five
cards I chose are,
Commitment. Shows my strong desire to achieve success and a resilient drive to work
hard.
Forgiveness. Is how I learn from my mistakes and move on from the past.
Sense of purpose. Makes me evaluate what every activity I am involved with to make sure
it benefits my personal growth as well as societies.
Being Challenged. A life without challenges would be a life without growth.
Respect. A fundamental value. If I wish to receive respect I must give it.

June 6, 2013
Objective: To get an A or B test score on all of my finals
spring quarter by using classmates, teachers and past
classwork to study at least two hours a day leading up
to each exam so that I can be proud of my hard work
and accomplishments.
Motivation: Pride in my grades and hard work during
this quarter.
Action Steps:
1. Gather all study resources for each class.
2. Spend time studying a little bit each day.
3. Get a group of classmates together to study
together.
Timing: Starting on Thursday June 6, 2013 study for
each class for two hours. On Saturday and Sunday
spend eight hours each day study for Calculus and
Financial Accounting.
Obstacles: Difficulty learning the material, stress, desires
to do other activities (go to beach, talk with friends),
projects and meetings.
Resources: Library, teacher, classmates, classwork (tests,
quizzes, homework, handouts)

What is Adversity Quotient?
A measurement of how well you deal with adversity, it is a predictor of human resilience and
performance.
Who uses AQ?
Employers use the AQ test to predict an employee’s level of productivity and success.
It also is used to predict how well an employee will deal with stress.
Summary of my Results: I fall within the low category. This means it is more difficult for me to
recover from setbacks and continue with my life. I may lose focus and become irritable.
CORE RESULTS WHAT I THINK IMPROVE
Control (28) Difficulties I encounter are
beyond my influence.
Focus on what I can
influence.
Ownership (23) It is okay to give up
ownership.
Visualize impact of
actions.
Reach (30) I let adversity into other
aspects of my life.
Ask: How can I control the
situation?
Endurance (32) Adversity will last a long
time.
Ask: How can I get passed
this quickly?

Leadership Statement:
I had the privilege of being led by the all-around incredible Dr. Ronda Beaman. Her
guidance and words of wisdom have been priceless. Her advice will stick with me past
this class and past my college experience. Everything we did had a purpose, everything
speaker we heard had a message and every song we danced to provide motivation. I hope
to be a leader just like every person that helped make this class so influential.
It’s a competition of who can be the best. This class gave me skills to be the best. This
class has inspired me to set myself apart from others. It has encouraged and given me
tools to challenge the status quo. I know what I want from myself and have the resources
to achieve it. I will become all that I can be.
Statement:
All the people who
have influence my
life. Thank you

  • 3. 3 Do you have what it takes to be a leader? What have you done that makes you one? There are many different definitions of leader, but what does it truly mean to be one? Dictionary.com defines leader as “a person who guides or directs a group” and co- founder of Apple, Steve Jobs said, "Innovation distinguishes between a leader and a follower." It’s up to a persons’ own idea about what a leader is. Throughout the Leadership Summit 2013 class I was able to more clearly define what being a leader means to me. After listening to a wide variety of successful leaders, I learned there are many types of leaders; not just one particular mold. My own definition is as follows, A leader is a determined individual who can deal with adversity in such a way that other people look to them for guidance and direction. A good leader will encourage and help others to achieve their own goals for the benefit of society. I strive to be this type of leader everyday. I have the resources, I have the skills and I will never stop trying to reach this goal. I have the potential to lead people and help others achieve a more fulfilling life. This portfolio contains the hard work and amazing experiences that I was able to partake in during this class. It is a description of myself as a person, my past, present and future. It explains who I am beyond my schoolwork and extracurricular activities. This portfolio is a glimpse at the leader inside of me. I hope you are inspired as I was during this class. Enjoy! Sincerely, Nicole Ludwig Define:LEADER

  • 7. 7 Background: My Consulting group, APEX, had the pleasure of speaking with Mr. Jonathan Gandhi. He is a businessman who is in the process of building a hotel. He admitted to having trouble gaining the respect from the older members in his team. He asked us to come up with some possible solutions and present them to him in person. Who: Mr. Jonathan Gandhi What: Sustainable Leadership Where: Denver, Colorado When: May 6, 2013 Why: To suggest solutions for current difficulties, due to young age, and how to become an established leader Advice: Form genuine lasting relationships, over communicate rather than under communicate, make sure conflict is constructive, set up routine meetings with team members, show commitment CaseStudy:
  • 8. 8 Servant Leadership: Servant leadership is based on authority over power. A leader will use this authority to benefit the people around him or her. Since the leader values contributions from employees, creativity and growth can flourish. A servant leader may appear to lack authority. As a result, performance may suffer. Task Oriented Leadership: This form of leadership is defined by task completion and deadlines. Easy to follow rules laid out by leaders lets employees know how to complete their task with precision. This type of leadership can lead to low morale in employees. They may not feel like they are important or part of a team. LeadershipTheories: 1 2
  • 9. 9 People Related/Oriented Leadership: People related leadership focuses on working in groups to complete tasks. Relations oriented leadership encourages personal interaction between employees and customers. They want to do what is best for the group, so they are glad to help wherever it is needed. People oriented leaders may put the growth of the team before the productivity of the company. Tasks may not always be completed in a timely and effective manner. Transformational Leadership: Transformational leadership focuses on morality and motivation. These leaders attempt to appeal to their follower’s values. Everyone in the group expects the best from everyone else. This leads to high productivity and participation from team members. Because they are so focused on the big picture, leaders can let the little details that pull everything together slide. LeadershipTheories: 4 3
  • 10. 10 Laissez- Faire Leadership: The main characteristic of laissez- faire leadership is very little guidance to followers. The general belief is that when people are left alone they are able to come up with and carry out tasks that they would not normally be able to under the direct supervision of a commanding leader. This form of leadership can lead to low productivity in the company. Bureaucratic Leadership: The key element to bureaucratic leadership is following the rules. They try to solve their problems with the power that comes from control and the orderly flow of information. This type of leadership does not easily foster creativity and growth. It may not be efficient for teams that depend on innovation. LeadershipTheories: 5 6
  • 11. 11 Democratic Leadership: Democratic Leadership is based on the free- flow of ideas. This type of leadership allows every person an opportunity to voice his or her opinions. Companies involved in advertising and design, who need to be creative, use this type of leadership to find new concepts and designs. Group members may feel alienated if their ideas are not greeted with praise Autocratic Leadership: Individual power and next to little input from group members characterizes autocratic leadership. The leader has total control over all decisions being made. Efficiency is one of the highest advantages. Power derived from autocratic leadership is sometimes abused. In this case a leader may come across as bossy, controlling and dictatorial. LeadershipTheories: 7 8
  • 12. 12 Transactional Leadership: Transactional leadership is based on the idea that people are motivated by rewards. This type of leadership can be very effective because it motivates employees to perform to their highest ability and efficiency. Unfortunately, employees may be left feeling replaceable because another worker could be hired easily. Charismatic Leadership: Charismatic leadership is characterized by using charisma to influence people to follow. A good leader can use ethics to transform people they lead. Mahatma Gandhi used charismatic leadership to help the world. Charismatic leaders’ intentions are not always good, for example Adolf Hitler LeadershipTheories: 10 9
  • 13. 13 Adventurous. CARING. Motivated. Strong. Passionate. Complex. Excited. Loving. Smart. Skilled. Brave. Helpful. Ambitious. Involved. Happy. Clever. Determined. WhoAmI:
  • 14. 14 I am a very independent worker. I get tasks done efficiently on my own time. I make sure that I am proud of everything I do. Doing badly motivates me to work even harder. Even though social networking works as a way to communicate the best way is still face-to-face. I do not like when people try to talk about difficult issues over text. It creates confusion and even more stress. Usually people can help me just by being understanding. I try to do a lot and sometimes I get stressed with everything I put on my plate. I try to be understanding of other people and believe them when they say they are extremely busy. I make decisions after I have carefully evaluate different information. It is important to weigh all the facts to pick the most efficient and effective solution. Although I try to think in depth, sometimes I don’t. I do make bad decisions, but I always make sure I recognize my mistakes. UserManual: MyStyleHelpMeDecisionsConnect
  • 15. 15 When I am stressed, I tend to take out my frustration on other people, which is something I need to work on. I usually like people to approach me. I like sharing ideas and helping others. I value hard work and communication. If other people are working hard then I really value their input and hard work. If someone is not adding to the group it’s hard for me to appreciate that person. I also value honesty and integrity. Staying true to myself, even when times get stressful is difficult. I strive to be the best person I can. I will not tolerate people who are lazy. Of course I love to have fun, but after I have done what I need to do. I do not tolerate judgment. Everyone should be given the same opportunity to talk in the group. We need to treat each other with respect in order to be successful. Approaching UserManual: TolerateValues
  • 16. 16 GOAL: To become a more well-rounded, knowledgeable, and accepting person as a result of my one-month trip to Europe this summer and to successfully plan and execute an inspiring trip with my best friend. Hobby:Traveling Traveling gives me an opportunity to see how the rest of the world lives. It opens my eyes to new ideas and experiences. I have had the privilege to leave the United States many times. I feel like I am a less naïve person because of it.
  • 17. 17 Excellence Perfection is an accomplishment I will never stop trying to reach. Trying to deliver top-notch work is incredibly important me. I will strive to present myself in a professional and knowledge manner to gain respect and others’ confidence. I will perform to the best of my ability and be proud of the work I have done. Team Work Working in a team will take place throughout the rest of my life. I will strive to always be helpful and patient with others. I will not judge others but I will listen to their opinions. I will be present and available to work or try my best to be present. At meetings I will be physically, emotionally, and mentally available to discuss ideas. I will be predictable, allowing others rely on me. I will be kind and caring to members in my group. I will show my interest in their personal lives to enhance the connection between the group members. Honesty I promise to be honest with everyone in my life. I will not avoid the truth but try to present it in a manner that will be least upsetting. I will try to be honest about how I feel about others ideas without causing conflict. I will be honest because I would want others to be honest with me. CodeofEthics:
  • 18. 18 Integrity I will maintain my integrity by not cheating or taking the easy way out of situations. I will gain respect and trust this way. I will put in the effort it takes to accomplish a task ethically and responsibly. I will hold myself to high standards and achieve success through hard work and dedication. Commitment If I say I am going to do something and I give my word I will do everything I can to make sure I do what I said I would do. I will not back out of plans when people are expecting me to be there. I will not neglect work when others are expecting me to complete a task. Sincerity I promise to always be genuine and honest with others. I will present myself for who I am. I will act the same when I am with others, as I will when I am alone. I will be true to myself and be confident in my skills and abilities. I will help people out of the goodness of my heart, not because I expect something in return. I, Nicole Ludwig, assume the full responsibilities of this Code of Ethics. ___Nicole Ludwig_______ _____________________ ( print ) (signature) CodeofEthics:
  • 19. 19 Bob Boyce China and Leadership Background: Bob moved to China when it was still relatively undiscovered. He began a restaurant chain that has turned into an extremely successful business. His Inspiration: Learning and knowledge My Inspiration: His curiosity and strength to move to a foreign country, his desire to succeed after the closing of his first restaurant and the way he adapted to the Asian culture. Mistakes: Bob ran into many road bumps along the way, but he said one of his biggest mistakes was not taking good advice that others offered. Change: I will try to take more risks. SpeakerAssessment:
  • 20. 20 Real Deal In my Leadership Summit class, I had the privilege of listening to Dr. Jeff Thompson, the co- developer or the Adversity Quotient. Dr. Thompson brought a gift for every student in the class. This gift was a “Real Deal” deck of cards. They were not just cards though. On every card there was a word. We were asked to pull out five cards with words we most valued. So many of the words were values that I believe in. I was forced to really evaluate what I believe in. The five cards I chose are, Commitment. Shows my strong desire to achieve success and a resilient drive to work hard. Forgiveness. Is how I learn from my mistakes and move on from the past. Sense of purpose. Makes me evaluate what every activity I am involved with to make sure it benefits my personal growth as well as societies. Being Challenged. A life without challenges would be a life without growth. Respect. A fundamental value. If I wish to receive respect I must give it. TheRealDeal:
  • 21. 21 June 6, 2013 Objective: To get an A or B test score on all of my finals spring quarter by using classmates, teachers and past classwork to study at least two hours a day leading up to each exam so that I can be proud of my hard work and accomplishments. • 22. 22 What is Adversity Quotient? A measurement of how well you deal with adversity, it is a predictor of human resilience and performance. Who uses AQ? Employers use the AQ test to predict an employee’s level of productivity and success. It also is used to predict how well an employee will deal with stress. Summary of my Results: I fall within the low category. This means it is more difficult for me to recover from setbacks and continue with my life. I may lose focus and become irritable. CORE RESULTS WHAT I THINK IMPROVE Control (28) Difficulties I encounter are beyond my influence. Focus on what I can influence. Ownership (23) It is okay to give up ownership. Visualize impact of actions. Reach (30) I let adversity into other aspects of my life. Ask: How can I control the situation? Endurance (32) Adversity will last a long time. Ask: How can I get passed this quickly? Adversity: MyResults
  • 23. 23 Adventures: Hobby:Outdoors I relate to this quote because I like to challenge myself, especially in the outdoors. I like to adventure and discover. I like to climb, swim and observe the natural world. H Scuba Certified Snuba Diving in Mexico Hiking the Grand Canyon
  • 24. 24 Leadership Statement: I had the privilege of being led by the all-around incredible Dr. Ronda Beaman. Her guidance and words of wisdom have been priceless. Her advice will stick with me past this class and past my college experience. Everything we did had a purpose, everything speaker we heard had a message and every song we danced to provide motivation. I hope to be a leader just like every person that helped make this class so influential. It’s a competition of who can be the best. This class gave me skills to be the best. This class has inspired me to set myself apart from others. It has encouraged and given me tools to challenge the status quo. I know what I want from myself and have the resources to achieve it. I will become all that I can be. Statement: All the people who have influence my life. Thank you Leadership Summit 2013.
