TV Scheduling
By Jessica Chong
The schedule for each day can be broken
down into morning, afternoon, evening and
night. These can be broken down further to
breakfast 6-9, daytime 9-12, lunchtime 12-2,
early afternoon 2-5, primetime 5-9 and post
watershed 9-6.
The target audience for these segments are;
Breakfast – adults and children
Daytime – elderly and students
Lunchtime – elderly and students
Early afternoon – elderly and students
Prime time – teenagers
Post watershed – adults and teenagers
The most popular genres on television are talk
shows, comedy and reality.
The target audience for each terrestrial
channel is;
BBC1 – Everyone
BBC2 – Older and Cleverer
ITV – Everyone
Channel 4 – Young and students
Channel 5 – Young
The percentage of the channel taking up by
repeats is;
BB1 – 10%
BBC2 – 50%
ITV1 – 10%
ITV2 – 40%
Channel 4 – 50%
Channel 5 – 20%
E4 – 50%
The repeats of the channels are because they
are popular and the audience are interested.
The channel buys the programme as its
cheaper than producing the programme.
The watershed occurs at 9 o’clock in the
evening. The watershed is were more explicit
contents is shown and language is stronger,
this might not be suitable for children.
