2. Scrubs Episode 1
In this clip we see the main character JD having his first day at work in hospital.
First we see him laying in bed and getting ready for work. While this is
happening we hear his voice talking to us and telling us all we need to know
about who he is what he does and what he is thinking.
He arrives at hospital and he is totally disorientated. While we see him sitting in
room in some sort of welcome/information meeting, where we get to see his
friend Turk.
Next scene we see JD and Turk in a sitting area of the hospital and suddenly Elliot
walks in. JD and Turk get all in flirt-mode because Elliot is a really good looking
woman. After all Elliot goes with JD upstairs.
Upstairs they get their pipers from a doctor.
Next scene we see JD hurrying to a patients room where he meets Carla.
In the patients room a patient is lying on a bed and Dr Cox steps in.
JD makes a very bad impression on Dr Cox because he is acting like he doesn’t
know what he is doing. Dr Cox already doesn’t like him and says to Carla that she
should do JDs task.
4. Stereotypes
In this short clip we see:
• A white American
• A black American
• A Hispanic women
These are the three Ethnicities I found in this clip.
So here are some stereotypes:
Americans= generous, hardworking, optimistic, like to volunteer, materialistic, violent,
obese, racist, Environmental unconsciousness
Black Americans= cool, sexually very virile, great athletes, good at dancing, don’t
like to be the “2nd role”, they like white women, been in jail,
listen to rap all the time, take drugs, don’t like to work
Hispanic women= poor, working in low labour jobs, overly sensual, passionate, curvaceous,
olive-skinned, virginal, religious, conservative and family-oriented
5. Camera shots and angles
There isn't a real difference in the shots for the different
ethnicities, because in this TV program everybody is working in
the hospital and in this scene we only see one patient in the last
scene who doesn’t even have a line. For example in scene 3 we see
JD and Turk having a discussion and the camera levels for the
over-the-shoulders-cameras are at the same level, just Turks level
himself is a bit lower because he is more relaxed and calm and is
also not giving any attention to the presentation, which shows the
stereotype that black Americans don’t like to work.
6. Editing
In the 3rd scene when JD an Turk are having the discussion most of the time
we see the shot from Turks over the shoulder, so it feels lie he is the one who is
more passive in this conversation , which gives him a much cooler look.
This shows again the stereotype that black Americans are cool ( like Chris
Tucker).
Next scene when Elliot walks in and JD try his luck with her we see a two
reaction-shots of Turk which makes him appear with more humour.
In the last scene we see Carla, JD and Dr Cox treating a patient and it is the
cut-rate is really fast-pace.
This is because the treatment of a patient is a really hectic process, but it also
gives Carla the energy, the temper and all the passion.
7. Sound
We hear the voice of JD talking to us whenever he is thinking or wants us to
tell something.
He has a very clear voice and talks with a lot of humour, but when he is
talking to other people he is very polite and sometimes he doesn’t know
what to say and just looks confused. Here we see the stereotype that
Americans are polite and hardworking, because we see and hear that JD is
trying his best.
In the 3rd scene when we see the conversation between JD and Turk we hear
Turk speak in a stereotype (black) language, for example Turk says “dude,
be wider” , also we hear JD being very careful not to insult Turk with The “n-
word”. Here we clearly see that JD is white and Turk black, because if both of
them had the ethnicity JD wouldn’t be that careful with what he says. Next
scene we see JD and Turk again and Turk says “ The surgical intern is gonna
grab a beer”, which really sounds like “rap-language ”. When Elliots comes
in the scene Turk asks her if she is medical or surgical, which is a completely
normal question but he says it in a very sexual way, which makes him look
sexually virile.
8. In scene 5 after Elliot and JD had their race a doctor with glasses enters the
scene and gives them instructions. Here we see again the stereotype of
hardworking Americans, but he speaks really like a machine and acts very
professional (Black Americans sometimes call this “acting white”).
In scene 6 and 7 we see Carla. When she meets JD for the first time, she already
calls him “Bambi” and during scene 7 she patronises JD by defending him
against Dr Cox, she says to Dr Cox “ be nice to Bambi ”. Here we see the
stereotype that Hispanic women are family orientated, because she treats JD
like her son, for example as they are already in the room she says to him” We
are waiting for Dr Cox”, JD didn’t ask anything but Carla wanted to let him
know.
While we are listening to the conversation between Carla, JD and Dr Cox we
find out that Carla is really passionate and curvy, because Dr Cox says that the
patient is next to Carla’s “wreck ” and hasn’t even flinched. Carla reply’s with
“that is so sweet “. In the beginning of the conversation when Dr Cox makes a
comment on Carla’s perfume she says very confidentially “I smell nice! “.
When she talks she always has a seductive, confident voice.
Here we see the stereotype of the confident, family orientated, passionate
Hispanic woman.
9. Mise en scene
2nd scene we see JD with a full rucksack, which shows he will be at work for a
long time or he has alto of work to do, which is in his rucksack.
3rd scene we see JD and Turk sitting. Turk is drinking a can of sprite and
sitting very relaxed on his chair. Again the stereotypes of the hardworking
American and the black American who doesn’t like to work.
In the first flashback to college time we see the younger versions of Turk and
JD. JD with a vokuhila haircut and Turk with a typical African/American
hairstyle and a open shirt unlike the others, this again makes him look more
cool and gives him this “Gangsta-look “.
The next scene we see Turk with a pizza in his hand, again unlike the others
which refers to the stereotype that black people like fast food (in America it is
often said that black people always go to KFC, which isn't always true).
Next scene where JD and Elliot get their pipers from the doctor we see him
wearing glasses, a shirt, a tie, his white jacket, a tool around nick and a watch.
Alone from his appearance you can see that he is hardworking and takes his
job a bit to serious (“ acting white “).
10. In scene 6 and 7 where we see Carla we already know she is Hispanic.
She has curly dark hair, a hair band which keeps her hair out of her face, but it is
more for fashionable reasons that she is wearing it.
She is also small and curvy which completely confirms the stereotype.
When we see her in the medium-shot we see her necklace, which looks like a cross,
but I couldn’t really see it clearly. If it is a cross we see that she is religious.
And the most obvious stereotype is here clothing, from her clothing we can tell
that she is a nurse and not a doctor.
It is said that Hispanic women often work in low labour jobs.
