For week seven Team activities, the team was required to decide upon a crime scene scenario
and then each team member was required to play a part in the scenario as if it were a real crime
scene. The scenario that was chosen is Homicide. The following “final report” describes what
role each team member played and his or her job(s) during the homicide investigation.

Crime Scene Project-Week 7
An employer named Joe Smith who arrived at his place of business early in the morning
between 5:30 am and 6:00 am says that in opening the place up for business he walked around
behind his building and noticed a dead body. Joe Smith then dialed 911 to notify the police, and
during his description of the dead body he said that it was a man he has seen previously, an
African American, who is chronically homeless. The inner city police arrive shortly after the
911 call to dispatchers, and they seal off the immediate scene to protect it from any interaction
with civilians.
The inner city police make the decision to call the crime scene unit to investigate the
death of the unidentified man who has been killed. The crime scene unit consists of three
investigators, Timothy Babcock, Terrill Johnson, Kelly Buckner, and each investigator has one
or more tasks to complete during the investigation. Kelly Buckner is the lead investigator on this
particular homicide investigation. She arrives at the scene after receiving the phone call from the
inner city police. Kelly assigns each crime scene investigator their duties, and then she begins
her tasks of collecting evidence after Timothy Babcock has taken all photographs, and creates a
crime scene sketch.
Timothy Babcock is the photographer and sketch artist. Timothy begins by measuring
out the area that has been sealed off to the public. Timothy Babcock takes overview photographs
of the general area, which includes a portion of the railroad tracks, a portion of the rear of the
business building. Timothy then takes close-up photographs of the body to document injuries
found on it, and to demonstrate the position of the body in which it lies.

Crime Scene Project-Week 7
Terrill Johnson is the medical examiner and he begins checking the body for causes of
death. During his examination of the decedent, he finds evidence of blunt force trauma to the
head. As Terrill continues his examination of the body, he turns the body over face up and
discovers two stab wounds to the top left chest area, and discovers defense wounds to the victims
for arms. Terrill determines after more examination that the victim died with a seven-hour
period, prior to being discovered by Joe Smith.
As Kelly Buckner searches for evidence, she finds a piece of pipe lying next to the rear
corner of the building. After some examination, she finds that it has traces of blood on it, and
she packages it carefully to be transported to the crime lab. Kelly uses the grid type search for
this investigation because she feels that it is the best method to find any evidence associated with
this crime. Terrill Johnson tells Kelly that he surmises that the pipe may have been used as the
murder weapon. Kelly agrees with this but tells Terrill that only further examination will verify
their suspicions. Kelly continues to look for the object that was used to make the stab wounds but
does not find it. Kelly thinks that the killer(s) may have taken it in an effort to thwart success in
the investigation.
At this point, the homicide investigation is on going as Crystal Cannon is still
interviewing witness, and family members of the victim. Stephanie Anderson is the crime
laboratory technician and scientist; she is still examining the evidence that was collected from
the crime scene. Three weeks have passed and at the current time, the investigation is at a
standstill while the team waits for test results.
