2. SNATCH
Snatch is a British gangster film,
made on the 23rd of August 2000
and it was directed by Guy
Ritchie. Its about a number of
characters who play different
roles that eventually tie together
at the end of the film.
I chose this this film as it starts
with a heist which fits in with the
idea me and my group have.
In this analysis I will be including:
• Narrative, Character, Setting
and enigma
• Generic Conventions
• Camerawork, editing, sound
and mise en scene
3. SNATCH ANALYSIS
The first scene opens with blacked out figure and then pans over his shoulder to a two shot between two individuals
named Turkish and Tommy. The black room has been used in this shot to make the audience uncomfortable and make
them seem like mysterious people. It also used to show that there lifestyle isn't exactly good and that maybe they have dark
lifestyles and could suggest that they are uncomfortable with the situation they have been placed in.
The Scene then cuts to a close up of Turkish while we can hear someone narrating in the background. Because it goes to a
close up of Turkish when we hear the narrating we immediately know that Turkish is the one talking. The close ups
between the two express their emotional state. In the close up with Turkish we see that he is quite serious about the
situation he is in whereas in Tommy’s close up we see him trying to distract himself suggesting he is nervous about the
situation he is in. We then see it cut a two shot between Turkish and Tommy when Turkish says “He’s my partner” which
tells the audience that these two characters are close . We also know that Turkish is the one in control between the two as
we see Turkish look at tommy and also we hear him say “ I try and keep him out of as much trouble as he inflicts on me”. It
is clear in this scene that they are in quite a dodgy place because of the darkness and the sound of the fly breaking the
silence in the room. This is effective as it shows the disturbance in the situation they’re in. It also introduces that Turkish
and Tommy are boxing promoters but based on their location and how shady it is the audience can probably guess they do
it illegally. At the end of the scene Turkish mentions his little knowledge on diamonds and that he thinks they come from
“Antwerp” which sets up the setting for the next scene.
The next scene fades to black and we are presented with a POV shot which shows security Tv showing four guys entering
a high security facility. This puts the audience in perspective of the security and makes them untrustworthy towards the
four guys entering the facility. Because you are made aware that they are most likely there to steal the diamond an enigma
is created to why they are after it and what is there purpose. The choice of clothing for the robbers and the dialogue of
religious beliefs, however this is contrasted as we can guess they are there to steal. Based on their facial expressions and
body langue. The fact they are wearing Jewish clothing and talking about religious beliefs. However this can be seen as a
stereotype because it is commonly considered that Jewish people are good at handling money . This makes it ironic
because It makes it seem that the for guys know what they're doing because they are allegedly Jewish.
4. SNATCH ANALYSIS PT. 2
In the next scene it cuts from the perspective of the security guard to a low angle shot of one of the men dressed in
Jewish clothing. The low angle portrays that the man is powerful and above the others in the room. It is also used to
make him seem intimidating towards the audience. It then cuts to a long shot of a Jewish man complain about the
lateness of the four men. It then suddenly zooms into a low angle of the four men as they present their true aim as guns
are presented. Form here onwards there is a series of fast cuts to make the audience disorientated and to make them feel
like a victim to the heist . In these series of cuts we can hear the music picking up from the original slow paced cultural
music to a more fast paced and chaotic tune. We can also hear a lot of shouting telling us the situation is heated. The
four men change their way of acting as at the start they were calm and peaceful, however as they entered the main office
they become more aggressive and more violent. After this there are close ups between one of the victims and one of the
robbers. Close ups have been use to emphasise the emotional state of both of the characters in shot.
The next scene starts off with an extreme close up of the diamond that was stolen. This tells us that the diamond plays a
key part in the film. It then cuts to a series of shots telling the audience a bit about the characters and what their role is
in the film. It uses freeze frames during these shots to tell you the names of each character and uses boxing poster
themes which give the audience an insight to what theme the film follows. The music behind this is upbeat and smooth
making it seem like a casual and calm film.
5. KILL BILL
Kill bill is a two part film about a Girl
known as Beatrix Kiddo and her
murderous path to revenge against those
who betrayed her by slaughtering her
family on her wedding day. The film was
released in 2003 with part two being
released in 2004 and it was directed by
Quentin Tarantino.
I chose this intro because of the way
the antagonists appearance is left
unknown as is the plot of the film.
In this analysis I will be including:
• Narrative, Character, Setting and
enigma
• Generic Conventions
• Camerawork, editing, sound and
mise en scene
6. KILL BILL ANALYSIS
The scene starts off with a black screen with heavy breathing in the background. This immediately sparks confusion in
audience to why there is heavy breathing and because the screen is black we cannot see what is going on causing more
curiosity to what is happening behind this black screen. The fast paced breathing tells us the situation is not
comfortable and that the person breathing is in a state of panic which causes the audience to be even more curious to
why this person is in a state of panic. After this a quote is presented which says “Revenge is a dish best served cold”.
This give us an insight to what the theme of the film Is going to be and sort of sets up the plot as we get the impression
its going to be about revenge but we are unsure about who and why.
We then see a High angle close up of a woman on the floor covered in blood. The high angle and is used to show the
woman in powerless to the situation she is in and to express the vulnerability of her current state. The close up has been
used to emphasise the characters emotional state to take up a lot of the frame making her the main focus. We can make
out that she is wearing a wedding dress in this scene. This contrasts with the situation she is in because normally we
would expect a happy occasion when a woman is in a wedding dress, however in the scene we are given she is
surrounded by glass and covered in blood and cuts. As the breathing continues we hear footsteps gradually drawing
closer the the character we can see on screen. This builds tension in the audience as we don’t know who is approaching
and why they are there. Also as the footsteps get louder the breathing of the woman increases telling us she is panicking
about who is approaching and suggests that she knows who is approaching hence her reason to panic. The discolour of
this scene tells us two things. One thing it tells us that it’s a negative situation as all the world has lost colour and
everything is quite bland and lifeless which could be what the woman on the floor is feeling. The second is that it could
be event that happened a while back and is being remembered in a negative and lifeless way.
7. KILL BILL
ANALYSIS PT. 2
After the footsteps build up it cuts to a low angle close up on who could be the antagonist of the film. In the shot we can
only see his legs making the character mysterious as we have yet to see who he is. This shot is also in black and white
suggesting that the man walking towards the bride isn't a positive character but someone who is potentially threatening.
It then cuts back to the woman on the floor but we never see the person who was approaching we only hear him and see
his boots. However it isn't until he pulls out his handkerchief that we get some information on him. In this shot he is
talking to the bride and wiping blood off her face but it’s the name ‘Bill’ on the handkerchief that tells us the name of the
man that was approaching. This is significant as it’s the only real piece of evidence that we are given about him as he is
not seen coming into shot except his boots and hand , we never see his face. The way that Bill talks to the bride tells us
that they know each other and had a strong relationship as he calls her ‘Kiddo’ and uses light hearted jokes like “ I could
fry an egg on your head right now”. While he is being quite normal about the situation he is in the bride continues to
panic telling us she knows what this man is capable of and she is clearly afraid of what he will do next.
Towards the end of the scene we see the brides eyes widen in fear as we hear what appears to be the loading of a gun.
The close up perfectly catches the sudden panic and the high angle is still used to show she is still powerless in the
situation. We also start to hear the breathing pick up again emphasising the panic and the danger of the brides situation.
The first bit of dialogue that we hear the bride say is “Bill, Its your baby” which tells us there was a relationship between
these two characters in the past and can suggest that Bill was doing this out of jealousy. As that piece of dialogue is
said the bride is shot in the head and it quickly cuts to black. The fast cut is used to leave the audience confused as to
what is going on and where will the story go from there. I noticed in this scene there was no music and believe that was
done to make the situation fell uncomfortable and was used to emphasise the diegetic sounds heard in this scene.
After this scene it cuts to black and the title credits are presented but the music in the background links in with the
current situation as we assume by this point the bride and Bill had had relationship and the music says “ my baby shot
me down” which links in to when Bill shoots the Bride. Also the slowed down music is used to leave the audience unsure
about the state of the bride and to tell a story of the relationship between the two characters. At the end of the sequence
we see a silhouette of a woman lying down but we do not know if she is dead or alive which has been purposely done to
create that mystery to whether she is alive or not.
8. AMERICAN
GANGSTER
American Gangster was directed by
Ridley Scott and was released in
2007. Its set in the 1970s and is about
a detective who aims to bring down a
drug empire run by a man called
Frank Lucas.
I chose this film based on the choice
of lighting and its use of sound. It is
also a good example of a
thriller/crime film.
In this analysis I will be including:
• Narrative, Character, Setting and
enigma
• Generic Conventions
• Camerawork, editing, sound and
mise en scene
9. AMERICAN
GANGSTER ANALYSIS
The opening starts by showing the universal logo and other film productions companies involved with this film.
While this is going we can hear some background music that is slow paced and mysterious. This has been used
to make the audience uneasy and make you feel more invested in the situation. While there is sound playing we
cannot actually see what is going on which makes us feel more drawn to the situation that is going on behind
the black screen.
It then quickly cuts to a close up of a man who is having petrol poured over him. A close up is used to make the
situation uncomfortable. I noticed that there was a slight high angle used to portray the man as weak and not in
control of the situation. In the scene we can hear a the man who is covered in petrol speaking another
language. This has been done to make the audience unaware of what is going on as they cannot understand
what he is saying making the situation even more mysterious. It then cuts to a low angle two shot of two men.
One of the men’s faces has been hidden using low key lighting. This has been done to make one of them
unknown creating a mysterious affect on the character as we don’t know who he is or why he is there. It then
cuts to one of the men setting the captive man on fire. We then see one of the men starting to shoot the man on
fire which tells us that these men are threatening and dangerous. After this we see the title of the film presented
but nothing else is presented leaving more mystery to who the two guys are and why they killed that man. The
way they are dressed tells us they are quite important people based on their formal wear.
