This document provides an introduction and overview of a course on the Turkish language including: - The course will be taught in English and focus on conversational Turkish, meeting twice a week. - Requirements include regular attendance, homework, participation in two film screenings, and a final group presentation. - Film selections and descriptions are provided. - Brief background on Turkey, Istanbul, and the Turkish language is given including the alphabet and sample phrases. - A sample dialogue in Turkish is included.

1. Welcome to An Introduction to the Turkish Language!

2. About this class… The course will be taught in English. I will be teaching mostly conversational Turkish. We will meet twice a week, but I’m available for outside help (find contact information in syllabus). We will use Blackboard pretty extensively.

3. Requirements Attendance: Please come to class every time! If you can’t… the ExCo committee allows 3 absences per semester. Participation Homework Assignments: Given at the end of each class, due at the beginning of the next class. Film Screenings: There will be two of these throughout the semester, attendance to one is required. Quizzes: Two take-home quizzes and pop-quizzes. Final Project: Individual or group presentation. 4. Film #1: Gönül Yarası (Lovelorn) (2005) Nazım returns to Istanbul after working as a teacher for years in Eastern Turkey. He temporarily starts working as a cab driver, and one day while working, he meets Dünya, an astonishing customer. She is a beautiful mother who has run away from her very troubled husband to Istanbul with her daughter, and has to sing at a nightclub to earn a living. Nazım starts to drive her to and from the club every day, and becomes her helper and protector against the many troubles and obstacles life has set for her. 5. Film #2: Mutluluk (Bliss) (2007) When a young woman named Meryem is raped, her village custom requires that she be killed in order for the dishonor to be expunged from her family. A young man named Cemal, the son of the village leader, is given the task but at the last moment he has doubts. The pair go on the run, followed close behind by local thugs intent on killing the girl. Luckily enough, Cemal and Meryem meet up with a charismatic man named Irfan, an ex-university professor who is embarking on a sailing trip, and needs a crew. Seems Irfan is running away too--in his case from a dead marriage and an empty life. Together this unlikely trio set forth on a voyage that will change all of their lives. 15. More about the language… Modern Turkish is very different from Ottoman Turkish. We started to use a modified version of the Latin alphabet after the script reform in 1928. The Turkish Language Association (TDK) replaced loanwords from Arabic and Persian with Turkish equivalents. Istanbul Turkish is the official standard language in Turkey.

16. Even more about the language… The basic word order is Subject – Object – Verb. We use LOTS of suffixes. Çekoslavakyalılaştıramadıklarımızdanmışsınız (You are said to be one of those that we couldn't manage to convert to a Czechoslovak) The language is highly PHONEMIC! A word’s pronunciation is identified by its spelling.

17. The Turkish Alphabet Consists of 29 letters (21 consonants + 8 vowels). No Q, W or X.
