This document provides instructions for administering the Timed Up and Go (TUG) test to assess mobility and fall risk in older patients. The TUG test involves having a patient sit in a chair, stand up, walk 3 meters, turn around, walk back to the chair and sit down again while being timed. Observations are also made of the patient's gait, stability and need for assistance. An older adult who takes 12 seconds or more to complete the TUG is considered at risk for falls. The test is part of CDC's STEADI initiative to screen, assess and reduce fall risk in older patients.
