In 2014 MEFL collaborated with Moreland City Council to determine the target and develop the strategy to shift to a zero carbon future. Moreland’s Zero Carbon Evolution (ZCE) strategy indicates that to be doing our fair share, we need to reduce our carbon emissions by 22% (on 2011 levels) by 2020. It is an ambitious target, requiring action and investment from all sectors of the community.
The five key strategies underpinning ZCE are:
Generating local renewable energy
Using energy efficiently
Low-emissions transport
Minimising the urban heat island effect
Activating the community to reduce emissions.
MEFL’s role
MEFL is delivering this strategy in partnership with Council and are leading implementation of three aspects of the strategy – generating local renewable energy, using energy efficiently and activating the community. We are using our expertise and experience facilitating local community action to deliver this major step change in emission reduction.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

Dear Parents,
I would like to welcome back all our families to TX for Term 3. Despite this term
being shorter in length, we have so many events planned: swimming galas, MP1
production, Year 6 trip to Gopeng and our summer concert to name but a few!
Congratulations to our children who graduated and received the Master of
Learning certificates for Respect and Perseverance in this morning’s assembly. In
order to be given the award, children must have shown that they have the qualities
that we should all aspire to in order to become outstanding learners. Here are some
of our ‘I can’ statements for Resect and Perseverance:
Respect:
I can look after others the way I would like to be treated myself
I can use good manners when talking to adults and children
I value all members of the community
I can listen to others’ ideas and opinions
Perseverance:
I know which stuck strategies to use
I am consistently focused in school
I have a positive attitude to challenging learning
I have no limits on my learning
This term we will focus on Integrity and Reflection.
Over the next two weeks, your child will be formally assessed in the following subjects: English, maths
and science. These test results will be analysed along with our on-going assessments in order to
establish your child’s level and progress made. Written reports will be sent to all parents on 12th
June
however, if you would like any further details about the assessments, being carried out in your child’s
class, please contact your child’s class teacher.
Last night, I was lucky enough to watch our very talented primary musicians as the twelve finalists from
TX and AP1 competed in the annual Young Musician of the Year competition. Congratulation to Hieu,
Yu Gyeong, Minh Anh, Theresa and Andrew who gave superb performances! Andrew was awarded third
place for his solo performance on the saxophone.
I look forward to supporting our TX swim squad as they compete over the weekend at ISHCMC. More
details will appear in next week’s newsletter.

Thien Phuoc Visit in Year 3
On Wednesday, the Year 3 children welcomed back their friends from
the Thien Phuoc orphanage. This is the third and final time we have
welcomed this group of children for a play date this year, as part of
Year 3’s community project.
This year, our Year 3 children have also visited their Thien Phuoc
friends at the orphanage. Two groups have been for play dates so far
and the final group will visit in June.
Thien Phuoc is an orphanage for children with disabilities, situated in
Ho Chi Minh City. The orphanage receives no financial support from
the authorities and is helped by charitable donations and the hard
work and support of its volunteers.
On Wednesday, Year 3 prepared for our guests by setting up
different play areas, with a range of activities in the foyer and soft
play room at TX. The children had a great time sharing games and
joining in with all of the activities.

Last night saw 12 musicians from both AP1 and TX primary
campuses compete for a chance to win the Young Musician of the
Year Final 2015. All of the finalists had passed through the first
round auditions and the gruelling semi-finals to be chosen to
perform yesterday in the AP2 Theatre. I’m so proud of all of the
entrants who had worked so hard and gave outstanding
performances. Our judges, Mr Williams (from the BVIS Music
Department) and Mr Alexander and Ms James (from the AP2
Music Department), had a very challenging job of listening to all of
the performances and deciding who our winners should be.
I am pleased to announce that John Lee (violin) was given first place; Chae
Rim Lee (piano) second place; and Andrew Vu (saxophone) third. Our
runner-up finalists were Hieu Nguyen (piano), Mel Chung (piano), Soo Min
Ryu (piano), Yu Gyeong Kang (cello), Sofia Lo (violin), Minh Anh Nguyen
(piano), Jenny Phan (piano), Jun Han Chong (Janggu drum) and Theresa
Lai (piano). Well done to all those who took part, you performed superbly,
musically and to a very high standard.
Thank-you to all of the parents and instrumental teachers who have
provided so much support and care for our growing musicians, and to all of
those adults and children who came to support our competitors. I’m already
looking forward to next year!
