The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

From the Head Teacher– Ms Sue Hill
Dear Parents,
In assembly this morning two important messages were given to children; the value
of taking charge of your own life and the importance of acting with integrity.
An announcement was made at the beginning of assembly by Mr Ian, saying that
he had received an important message which was urgent for us all to hear. The
authorities in Ho Chi Minh City had decided that from next week, girls were not
allowed to receive an education and could not attend school. The TX children
gasped and one or two even cheered! They became more alarmed when we
considered the consequences of girls not being able to access an education or take
exams. This was the situation that Malala Yousafzai found herself in, at the age of 11years, in Pakistan.
When the Taliban took over The Swat Valley, where Malala was living, the thought of not having access
to an education prompted her to take charge and let the world know what was happening through a blog.
Malala who now lives in the UK is a highly inspirational young lady, who was recently awarded the Nobel
Peace Prize as she continues to campaign for education for all children no matter what their religion or
nationality is.
Taking Charge is one of our BISCAT pillars and children are encouraged to look at ways they can take
control of their own lives and have a voice in their community. Luckily, we are not in the situation that
Malala found herself in however we can make a difference. Remember children, you can have a voice by
joining the Eco Warriors and the Eco Scouts or you could let your student council representative know of
your ideas for making our school even better.
The second part of the assembly was a celebration for 12 children who were awarded the Masters of
Integrity in a graduation ceremony. I then had the pleasure of fine dining with our Masters graduates this
lunch time. Congratulations to Rena, Trong, Toshi, Subin, Truc, Tammy, Pauline, Mina, Gia An, Gia Bao,
Chi Nghia and Hannah. These children have shown that they repeatedly make good choices about how to
act.
Next week, I am looking forward to our Summer Concert - TXstravaganza. All parents are welcome to
come and watch on Wednesday 10th
June at 6pm

Green Certificate, May 2015
1T have worked so hard throughout May to make sure that they kept their
room as green as can be. Eco-Scouts looked at the use of scrap paper in
the printer, the correct use of the recycle bin, and whether the class still
displayed the Eco-Code.
Well done 1T for doing everything right.
And as always, everyone remember:
Reduce, reuse, recycle too,
The Eco-Teams are watching YOU!

Parents’ Corner
What a great evening last night! For most of us, Karaoke was a
totally new thing. From a shy beginning, we started to gain
confidence and enjoyed singing duos, solos and in groups; we
sang Vietnamese, English and even French songs. After each
performance, the computer gave us a score. At the end of the
evening, ‘Dancing Queen’ remained our highest score with 97
points. Maybe next time, we can beat that! It was also a
moment to share and learn about the songs, their meaning and
their stories. We discovered a very famous song about Ho Chi
Minh City in the spring and were surprised to have the
Vietnamese version of a famous French song.
Karaoke night will be back next academic year! Don’t be shy
next time; come along and enjoy an evening of fun in ‘battle
mode’ with prizes!
