Treatment
By Carmen Katema
• ‘Gun’ by CHVRCHES. Our chosen artist is Alessia Marquez.
• The genre of our music video is Electronic, Synthpop.
• Duration: 3:53
• Target audience: 12-17, Females, likes and hobbies would most likely include
shopping, beauty, friendship and love. Most likely to be a fan of Kesha,
Lorde and HAIM.
Outline of Format
• The opening of our video will begin with a shot of our gymnast, Daisy Sutherland-Young doing choreography in a park – we aim to incorporate
watercolours within this shot through the use opacity in production.
• After this short intro we intend to showcase our artist by showing multiple performance shots of our artist mouthing along to the track.
• In our first verse we want to also introduce our narrative, showing a shot of Alessia walking into a shopping centre, and witnessing her boyfriend
holding hands with another girl. We aim to use multiple close ups of her face in order to show the audience her feelings of betrayal.
• After this we want to develop the narrative further by showing the audience a flashback of Alessia with her boyfriend – showing happier times. After
this, we aim to use more shots of Alessia’s love interest with his secret girlfriend – this is to illustrate how Alessia has been replaced which further
triggers her anger and feistiness.
• Through the production phase we then aim to include shots of kaleidoscopes and flashing lights – this is a convention often seen in synthpop,
electronic music videos.
• For the chorus we shall use shots of Alessia having fun, dancing in a park, whilst repeatedly pointing a bubble gun at the camera, as well as playing
with her hat. We also aim to use shots of her blowing bubbles to the camera to show her cheeky attitude.
• The second verse will show multiple shots showcasing a performance aspect of the video. Shots of a dj and our artist singing into a microphone to
make it look as though it’s a live performance.
• We aim to show a shot of Alessia reading a love note from her boyfriend, whilst looking heartbroken.
• For the bridge we will use a shot with long duration of Alessia on the floor surrounded by balloons whilst singing to the camera.
• Towards the end of the video we will show Alessia releasing a red heart-shaped balloon that represents her letting the past go.
• At the end of a video we want to end on an empowering note, so we will gather a group of Alessia’s friends and show them dancing and singing
along to the music, as a way to showcase the importance of friendship.
Character Breakdown
• Our artist is a young girl between the ages of 15-17.
• Our character stands for girl power and independence. She starts off quite
vulnerable as she’s just found out that her love interest has secretly been with
another girl. However, towards the end of the video, the song becomes less
about heartbreak and more about freedom, liberation and friendship. She
represents young teenage girls who are going through heartbreak – however
she teaches them that the most important thing is not being afraid to move
on and have fun.
Visual Elements
• Lighting: We aim to use bright lighting in order to make the scenery appear vibrant and fun. We
will also use artificial lighting (colourful/neon lights)
• Camera Movement: Shots of main artist singing and dancing, also shots following the narrative
• Editing: We aim to use kaleidoscopes and opacity in order to merge watercolours with a few of
our shots. Also lots of snappy cuts in order to match to the beat.
• Setting: The Park, Café Shop, performance venue
• Props: Heart shaped balloon, plenty multi-coloured balloons, microphone, bubbles, toy gun.
• Actors: Main Artist, Boyfriend, 2nd girl, large group of friends
• Costume: Sunhats, floral skirts, (very girly colours; pinks), leopard print dress
Rationale
• I have chosen this concept because it has a lot of relation to what girls
around my age go through, therefore I thought this would help me tackle the
idea love and heartbreak. I also really enjoy the idea of bringing girls together
and putting across an empowering message to young girls.
• I thought that this genre would be very interesting because there’s a lot we
can do with it (eg experiment with bright colours, different patterns and also
incorporating choreography. This made the whole experience more fun for
the actors and Romina and I.)
Primary and Secondary Research
• My secondary research included looking up the forms and conventions of our
chosen genre (synthpop, electronic). I found that researching similar artists to this
genre helped me to create our overall character. We tried to incorporate these artist’s
use of vibrancy and quirkiness into our own artist in order to create a sense of
individuality. A lot of the artists within this genre tend to sing about freedom and
dancing, so we aim to use a lot of shots showcasing our artist having fun in this way.
• Our own primary research consisted of us playing our track for our fellow peers to
listen to and provide relevant feedback. We were told that by hearing the track they
got the vibe that our artist would be a young girl, catering to young teens around her
age. Certain words such as ‘cute’ and ‘girly’ were used, therefore we aim to use these
words to form our artist’s image.
Requirements and Resources
Cast and Locations
• Alessia Marquez
• Alan Goodman
• Iman Sheik
• Group of friends
• We aim to use a large park for our artist, gymnast and the
betraying couple. We have to take into consideration the weather
for filming outside (stepping on muddy ground).
• Café – this is for the narrative, in order to show Alessia spotting
her boyfriend with another girl. It’s important for us to get
permission to film in this location from the shop owner
beforehand. This location is simply up the road from our school,
therefore it’ll be easy to access.
• We aim to use Romina’s dad’s restaurant, which has a small
performance ground in order to add a live performance aspect
to the video.
Equipment
• Camera
• Tripod
• Dolly
• SD Card
• Charger
Constraints and Contingency
• A few problems could arise during this project. As we will be filming in a public
place, we have to be aware of those around us and be sure to not block their view
or get in the way.
• Weather: lately the weather has been unfortunately unpredictable, therefore we have
to be cautious of wind and rain. We aim to check how the weather conditions will
be on that day in order to prepare ourselves.
• Equipment: It will be important for us to keep the equipment as safe as possible,
especially during bad weather. Our solution would be to never leave the equipment
unattended and handle it with great care.
Legal and Ethical Considerations
• In order to avoid issues in this area (eg; copyright), I have received
permission directly from our artists management via email to use the track.
Budget
• Props: Balloons (two packets) £9, Bubbles £ 1, Toy gun £2
• Total: £12
Proposed Filming Schedule
• Romina and I aim to book the equipment for 28th-30th of October – during
half term. I believe this date will give us enough time/days to consider what
we’ve recorded and conclude whether or not we want to add more footage.

As we will be filming in a public place, we have to be aware of those around us and be sure to not block their view or get in the way. • Weather: lately the weather has been unfortunately unpredictable, therefore we have to be cautious of wind and rain. We aim to check how the weather conditions will be on that day in order to prepare ourselves. • Equipment: It will be important for us to keep the equipment as safe as possible, especially during bad weather. Our solution would be to never leave the equipment unattended and handle it with great care.
  • 10. Legal and Ethical Considerations • In order to avoid issues in this area (eg; copyright), I have received permission directly from our artists management via email to use the track.
  • 11. Budget • Props: Balloons (two packets) £9, Bubbles £ 1, Toy gun £2 • Total: £12
  • 12. Proposed Filming Schedule • Romina and I aim to book the equipment for 28th-30th of October – during half term. I believe this date will give us enough time/days to consider what we’ve recorded and conclude whether or not we want to add more footage.
