DEFINITION
 The area of assessment criteria is one where a more
expert writer (a marker of a translation examination or
a reviser of a professional translation) addresses a less
expert reader
Munday
 Traslation critisim is an essential link
between translation theory and its practice
Peter Newmark, A textbook of Translation
Translation assessors
 A translation may be evaluated by various authorities:
1) The reviser employed by the film or the translation
company;
2) The head of the section or of the company
3) The client;
4) The propessional critic of a translation or the teacher
making one;
5) The readership of the published work.
Newmark
Assessment criteria
Assessment criteria – Faithfulness, Accuracy, Style:
• The knowledge of the grammar of the source language plus
the knowledge of vocabulary, as well as a good
understanding of the text to be translated
• The ability of the translators to reconstitute the source
language next into the targer language.
• The translation should capture the style or manner and
convey the message of the original text
El Shafey
Newmark’s translation critisim model
1. A brief analysis of the SL text;
2. The translator’s interpretation of the SL text’s
purpose;
3. Comparision of the translation with the original;
4. An evaluation of the translation;
5. Where appropriate, an assessment of the likely
place of the translation in the target language,
culture or dipcipline;
1.1 The author’s purpose
Margaret Munnerlyn Mitchell was an American novelist
and journalist. She likes writing about romantic
relationship. Gone with the Wind is a 1939 American epic
historical romance film adapted from the 1936 novel by
Margaret Mitchell.
1.2 Characterization of the readership
The readership can be a huge number. Any
uninformed reader who are keen on romantic
relationship is able to read. Moreover, reader who
want to get further information about World War II
in United Kingdom, would certain be sunk in her
creation.
1.3 Text type
Desciptive
+ using many adjectivity and noun to describe Scarlett’s beauty:
green flowered-muslin, flat-heeled green Morocco, the smallest in
three counties, small white hands,The green eyes, sweet face
1.4 The stylistic scale
+ Scale of formality: Neutral
+ Scale of generality or difficulty: Neutral
+ Scale of emotional tone: Intense
1.5 Quality of the text
- Good text: flexible vocabulary, exactly
words to describe and express emotion
2. THE
TRANSLATOR’S
PURPOSE
Purpose:
- See the text from the perpecstive
of the translator
- Analyse the translation to find out:
• Translation methods
• Language of the translation
 Cultural factors in translation
 Other texts added/removed by
the translator (if any)
2. THE TRANSLATOR’S
PURPOSE
The purpose of translation should be to achieve 'equivalent effect'
The translator’s goal should be an idiomatic translation.
Newmark (1988: 46) states that idiomatic translation reproduces
the message of the original but tends to distort nuances of
meaning by preferring colloquialisms and idiom where these do
not exist in the original.
The translation by Duong Tuong focuses on the equivalence,
semantic and communicative purpose.
2.1 Translation methods
Translation methods: Semantic translation.
‘semantic translation attempts to render, as closely as the
semantic and syntactic structures of the second language
allow, the exact contextual meaning of the original’
- Newmark (1981, p. 39).
2.2 Language of translation
Same language as source text.
Cultural factors in translation:
• All idioms are successfully translated into
Vietnamese.
• The unit of measurement is converted to be more
suitable for Vietnamese people
! Some complex sentences are broken down into shorter sentences

Equivalence in TL culture
The text has no metaphors but it has some untranslatable words.
Some words the translator keeps the original
•muslin
•Mammy
not clearly, confusing
4. THE EVALUATION OF THE
TRANSLATION
Evaluate it by your own
standards or referentical
and pragmatic accuracy
• Error
• Linguistic
• Comprehension
• Translation
• formatting
Assess the translation as
a piece of writing.
Independently of its
original
4.1 Translation’s success
Many idioms were successfully translated by the translator,
capturing the original's symbolic and grammatical meaning.
(1) “Buổi chiều huy hoàng” (TL) “that bright April afternoon” (SL)
(Bright = glorious, very beautiful and impressive)
Normally “bright” mean “full of light” “shining strongly”
(2) “Nét đoan trang của mớ tóc búi gọn” (TL)
“The demureness of hair netted smoothly into a chignon” (SL)
“The demureness” in English mean a girl behaving in a quiet
For the readers easier to understand -> “đoan trang”
4.1 Translation’s success
(4) “bản ngã thật sự của cô” (TL)
“her true self” (SL)
Using equivalent: “bản ngã” mean ideal, memories,
conclusions, experience, the belief that the body is a
separate individual
(5) The translator's ability to successfully translate these
idioms into Vietnamese demonstrates a high degree of
language proficiency and a large vocabulary in Vietnamese.
Examples:
“họ giống nhau như hai giọt nước” (SL)
“alike as two bolls of cotton” (TL)
 The necessity of translation through translation; the
translator must comprehend the procedures and tactics
in order to fully convey the author's message
- achieve the accuracy
- expression in a second language as a native speaker
- Effectively communicate the original meaning to the target
audience in a manner that is both readable and
comprehensible.
- Follow all grammatical conventions and adhere to rules for
line breaks, punctuation, alignment, and capitalization.
