1. Literal translation
- basic translation procedure, both in communicative

2. Transference
(loan word/ borrowing)
- using the same word or expressive state in the SL and the TL.
- proper names, geographical names, names of companies and
institutions, literary works, addresses, etc.
- New technical terms that do not have equivalents in SL
Ex:
+ Áo dài là trang phục truyền thống của Việt Nam.
-> Ao Dai is the traditional costume of Vietnam .
+ Her personal blog is very popular.
 Blog cá nhân của cô ấy rất nổi tiếng.

2. Transference
(loan word/ borrowing)
2 types of loan word
pure load word loan blend
[borrowed without changing
form and meaning]
[borrowing in which part of a word
is native and the rest is borrowed]
Ex: hotel -> hotel,
marketing -> marketing,
internet -> internet
Ex: ozone layer -> tầng ozone,
internet provider -> nhà cung cấp internet.

Naturalization
- adapts the SL word first to the normal pronunciation,
then to the normal morphology (word-form) of the TL.

5. Addition
- The additional information added to TL which is not present in the SL
- It is normally cultural, technical, linguistic and dependent on the
requirement of the readership.
Ex:
- A cat person ( người yêu mèo)
- Marriage certificate ( giấy đăng kí kết hôn)
- Wedding guest ( khách tới dự đám cưới)
- Garbage truck (xe chở rác)
- Handbag ( túi xách tay)

6. Omission
- dropping a word or words from the SL while translating
 avoiding lengthy and inaccurate by omitting supporting
words, abstract nouns from SL.
+ I have had a tailor make this beautiful dress.
(Tôi vừa may bộ váy đẹp này).
+ I am on the side of him.
(Tôi ủng hộ anh ấy).
+ Good morning, Mr Brown.
(Chào ông Brown)

7. Shift/ Transposition
- change in the grammar from SL to TL
- replaces one word class without changing the meaning
of the message from source language.
Singular -> Plural
+ “His Master had to fasten a heavy wooden clog about his neck to keep him
from annoying visitors and neighbors”.
-> Chủ của nó phải đeo cho nó một cái còng cổ rất nặng để ngăn nó không làm
phiền du khách và hàng xóm.
+ The glasses and earrings that she’s wearing are expensive brands.
 Cặp kính và đôi khuyên tai mà cô ta đeo toàn là đồ hiệu đắt tiền.

Verb/Adverb  Adjective/Noun:
+ “Stay Alive” -> Trò chơi định mệnh. + “Crush” -> Mê dại.

Complex sentence  Simple sentences :
+ You need to wait at least 30 minutes after a
meal before taking your medicine.
 Bạn cần đợi ít nhất 30 phút sau khi ăn để uống
thuốc.
+ Place the burn under cool water, running
water for 20 minutes.
 Xả vết bỏng dưới nước mát trong 20 phút.

8. Cultural
equivalent
- approximate translation where a SL cultural word is translated by a TL cultural word
 not accurate
The degree of meaning equivalence uses fully equivalence and different meaning.
+ It never rains but it pours. -> Họa vô đơn chí.
+ Two an play that game.  Ăn miếng trả miếng.
+ Speak one way and act another. -> Nói một đằng làm một nẻo.
+ His eyes are bigger than his belly. -> No bụng đói con mắt.
+ Laughing is the best medicine.
-> Một nụ cười bằng mười thang thuốc bổ.

9. Functional
equivalent
- applied to cultural words, requires the use of a culture-free word.
The degree of meaning equivalence is partly equivalence.
+ In an article published in Tribune newspaper, author Larab said
President Ho Chi Minh fought against the colonialists and illiteracy and for
human rights.
 TL: Trong một bài báo đăng trên tờ Tribune, tác giả Larab đã nói rằng
chủ tịch Hồ Chí Minh đã chiến đấu chống thực dân, nạn mù chữ và vì quyền
con người.
+ Donald Trump was the 45th president of the United States.
 TL: Donald Trump là tổng thống thứ 45 của Hoa Kỳ.

10. Descriptive
+ SL: Request of Discussion
TL: Đề xuất để khởi tạo những nhóm tin
tức và bắt đầu thảo luận trên chủ đề mà
bạn chọn
+ SL: Boomerang
TL: Cái khúc cây cong cứng, đẽo thành
hình giống như cái lưỡi liềm của Thổ dân
Úc", còn chức năng của nó là "dùng làm

 SL: Continental breakfast
TL: bữa điểm tâm nhẹ gồm có bánh mì

11.5 Active voice  Passive voice

 SL: He is said to be serious.

12. Couplets
- Combine two or more translation procedures for dealing with
a single problem.
- Particularly common for cultural words, where transference
may be combined with a functional or cultural equivalent.
SL: The Next Generation Network (NGN) With the ability to

Vietnam. This paper aims to study the challenging problem of
